fly
Shot and hit a nice buck this morning. He ran 60 yards and stood there for 20 minutes arching his back. Then slowly walked up the hill and out of sight. Arrow had blood and hair, but the first 10-20 yards of the blood trail were just specs. The hit looked good, but he sure acted like a gut shot deer so I'm giving him 24 hours. Will look in the morning. Keep your fingers crossed. fly
Thanks everyone. Thirty degrees out right now. I'm in Jersey county this week. Next week Union then Greene for ML season. Taking the kids to church at 8am then we're all headed out to look. Will let you all know how it turns out later today. Hopefully pictures will accompany. I missed this same deer clean 2 weeks ago. Saw him last week at 20 yards, but never got a shot (you all know how it goes sometimes). Anyway, I'm thinking he's a 130's kinda deer, but I always do poorly on the guess the score contests here. Hopefully I'll be proven right, but I'll be glad to be proven wrong as well.

fly
Looked for 3 hours, until my kids were wore out. No deer. I found the spot he had stood still for so long. Big blood pool, but he got the bleeding to stop there because there was no blood leading away from that spot. Pretty bummed out. Going with my dad in the morning for one more try, but I'm not counting on finding him. Hate it when it turns out like this. Makes you want to quit bow hunting, but I've been through it before and in a couple weeks I'll wonder why I ever thought of quitting. AceArcher
I know the feeling and had a similiar situation last year. Ends up someone found the deer I gut shot and has him hanging in there house!! Good luck in shotgun season. Where do you hunt in Union county? We gun hunt rigth outside of Buncombe on the Johnson/Union line. Anyways good luck.
ruttinbuc
There is still hope Frank. Jersey county can be a rugged place to track a deer depending where you hunt. A lot of up and down which effects the blood trail. On the downhill and uphill the deer steps stretch the hide and will cover the wound and slow the blood. If you lost the blood on the down or uphill look farther than you think you should.
fly
Well I coverd as much area as I could in 4 more hours this morning along with dad coverign about half as much. Nothing. My goal for this season was to harvest everything i shot. No such luck. I gun hunt near the town of Anna IL. Well going to bed now, thanks for the prayers and crossed fingers. ruttinbuc
Was pulling for you. Can't win them all I guess. All you can do is try. There is one out there with your name on it. Go get him!
fly
Yesterday was four weeks since I had shot my big buck and yesterday I found him. Unfortunately someone else had before me. The neck had a smooth cross cut at the base of the head. Someone cut the head off and left the rest. Expected given this was a public ground. The rib cage and feet were huge! This deer likely went over 200 pounds. I found him approx 500 yards from where I shot him. The odd thing is he died in a creek about 150 yards from an abondoned house in thick brush. I never would have thought he would have went that way. After exploring the land it made sense, although it was a much longer route to water, it was the easiest for a wounded deer to take. The closest I had come to him while searching was about 200 yards and the leaves were still around making it much harder to search. Wish I knew who took the head, I would have liked to examine his teeth and get an age.
wtnhunt
Missed this thread the first time around. Too bad you did not find him the next day Frank, sounds like it was a real nice buck. Unfortunate that it happens.
magnatecsteve
Sorry about your luck, that stinks. Deer that are gut shot will typically try to find water since they become very dehydrated...keep in mind if you or someone you know has this happen again. All you can do is move on, I know it's frustrating though.
redkneck
Better luck next time Frank. It happens to all of us, makes it so much worse when it's a good buck.
ruttinbuc
A bitter pill to swallow after solving the mystery, Frank. It is unfortunate someone got there before you.
wildthing
too bad you couldn't make the recovery. It seems as though deer tend to do the opposite of what logic tells us the hunter they should do. Yet another lesson taught by the whitetail deer.
