Griz
Here’s the deal… Ill try and explain this the best I can… I wish I had my camera so I can post some pics of this area and everything else in this area to give you a better idea…But I forgot it… Ok…Here it goes… Things here have been slow. I have been seeing several small Bucks just no shooters. So I took a day and did some scouting in several places. Me and a buddy of mine came across a area here on the ranch. I have never hunted this area before and I was very curious what was going on here. This place is tore up with big buck sign. I mean from rubs to scrapes…From Top to Bottom... Not just one or two…Several… Trees from the size of my leg to my little finger… I told Brian that we just found his major rub and scrap line… These scrapes are so fresh that they were wet… It didn’t take us long to get out of the area… This Hill has a shelf that is covered up in hardwoods and cedars. This hill wraps around to the South end which I believe is there bedding area which will be about 400/500 yards away in the thicket…I think this Buck is cutting across the South end of this hill coming to the shelf to start his rounds… What I did is I went to the top of this hill over looking this bottom and shelf. Then me and Brian made a natural ground blind out of Cedar Trees… Not only is it a perfect cover but it will also cover up your scent to... We had perfect wind when we did this and was in and out in no time. That evening we had a rain which got rid of any scent that we left behind… My plan is to let it lay for a week…Slip into the area Sat. Morning which is our Gun Opener…Get down the Hill a bit going to the bottom a set up a decoy along with some Tink’s 69… I’m thinking I can sit back and let things settle down till legal light. Pickup the horns and grunt tube and try and pull that Buck to the Decoy… The only thing that I’m going to be concern about is the wind. Reason is, the way this hill runs is North and South. Plus there is only one way in and one way out…So there's no back door... Do you think this set up will work. I told Brian that if we have a North wind that we may have to pass it up… He seems to think since we are going to sit up high on this hill and sitting in the center of these Cedar Trees that we may be alright… What do yall think… Am I good to go… Thanks… Griz…
Tim Andrus
Tough call griz, with that hill does the wind swirl much? in some cases it will. Also oif your using a decoy (buck) be careful someone else doesent take a poke at it with you somewhere behind it. Also, if its warm your scent should rise as long as its blowing right. Sounds like a great spot just go with your gut feeling on the wind. You know right from wrong
Texan_Til_I_Die
If it were me, I'd try it first without using the decoy. Decoys are funny things, I've seen them work pretty well at times, and at others they'll spook every deer that comes by, including the dominant bucks. And I've never been able to find any type of pattern as to when they're good or when they're terrible. Good luck, I hope he turns out to be a monster and you get a whack at him! hutchies
I'm no pro dale but most mornings where I sit when the sun starts to warm the cold earth you get the upper thermals. If the wind is right it will carry your wind up and away. I've killed alot of deer downwind of me but of course I wasn't on the ground either.
