Missilelock
Does anyone have any experience in taking their rifle from the east { low elevation} up into the rocky mtns.....say 10000 feet. What I am wondering is if the change in the air at altitude will have much effect on the zero of your rifle?? Thanks
colorado bob
None. I had a buddy come from Long Beach, CA this elk season. He was 2" high @ 100 yards in CA & the same here in Durango. We hunted at 11500. He killed a bull @ 230 yards. CB
JJL
Not too quick there CB............. Here's a ballistic calculator that will show you differently. http://www.biggameinfo.com/BalCalc.aspx We do alot of pd shooting at 6,000 ft. Move on up to 10,000-12,000ft. to shoot whistle pigs and there's a BIG difference. Not so much at 200 yards, but start stretching it out to 500-1000 and you'll soon find out it does make a difference.
stevebeilgard
you got it, jim. i've had the same results. good to see you back again. and i never knew you were 1000 yard shooter. i used to love it, but haven't done it in a loooooong time. and, the flatlanders don't know what a whistle pig is, either. lol

I got somewhere around 40 before hibernating started. Not too bad for going out here and there when I can.
stevebeilgard
i meant no offense. it was just a joke. and a whistle pig is actually a hoary marmot, generally found above 10,000'. think of a high groundhog that whistles when danger is present. dbHunterNY
who's offended?? steveb if you were talking about me then don't worry i wasn't. i've been with the understanding that groundhogs, woodchucks, and whistle pigs are all one in the same. we pretty much call them woodchucks around here. that's what i shot 40 of on my parent's farm anyway. a bit different from prarie dogs. i bet out west you get larger groups that aren't so scattered like you get around here. anyway lol... as said elevation makes a difference. colorado bob
db---It was not directed at you but at me. There is still a sore spot with me & Steve. I've hunted out here since 77. Been on 4 sheep hunts, 1 mtn goat & elk for the past 33 years. I've NEVER adjusted for altitude. But I don't shoot at 1000 yards----That's over a 1/2 mile. I don't even know what the hold over for my 30/06 at that distance. I doubt if there is even enough energy at the range to kill a bull. 300 yards is about my cut-off. Guess I should have clarified my original post to REASONABLE & RESPONSIBLE shots.

ruttinbuc
Whistle pig is a name for groundhogs around here. You need to whistle to get them to pop up out of their holes or get them to stop and put their head up. We can only use a .22 or a shotgun here to shoot them. I'll have to check about using a ML. My longest shot here at elevation of less than 1000 feet was 160 yards. It was all luck. life is too short to keep grudges You got that right, Steve. It is most unfortunate for those who to this day don't post or participate here for that very reason.
