Ravin R10 man
11/14/2010 Deer hunters and businesses that depend on deer hunters are holding their breath this week in Ashland and Bayfield Counties. Mike Simonson reports from Superior. They’re waiting for confirmation later this week from the federal government about the first Chronic Wasting Disease test found in northern Wisconsin. The Department of Natural Resources will have surveillance and testing of deer taken in a 10 mile radius of Ashland during this year’s hunt. State Chronic Wasting Disease Coordinator Davin Lopez says there is a chance that the CWD has not spread to the wild from the deer farm where it was found, but it'll take years of surveillance before that’s determined. Lopez says the disease is 100% fatal in deer and takes about two years to kill the infected animal. “Because so many of them are getting infected at a young age, they don’t tend to live much longer than two years. That would have a more immediate impact and to some people a more devastating impact because it would be the ruination of the trophy hunt.” CWD can also spread to elk…and Wisconsin’s only wild elk herd is in Sawyer, Ashland and Bayfield Counties. Lopez says although it can kill elk, studies show the disease is slow to spread in elk herds. Baiting and feeding…a big business in the northwoods during the hunting season…would be banned starting in January but would not effect this hunting season. Bob Hamblin is the manager of United Ag Services in Ashland. He says this news is devastating to feed stores. “When you figure corn at $7 a bag times 400 bags in a truck, probably four of them going out a week, it’s major.” The deer gun hunting season opens Saturday and lasts nine days. "I can just hear the DNR now...they wanted to ban baiting all along and this gives them the reason". XT
arrow32
We had a few cases here in a few counties didn't hear much about it after that. Do know you weren't allowed to take deer killed in those counties out of those counties but I've not heard anything new on it in a good while. Sucks t here that man. But we are still aloud to bait here.
stevebeilgard
most states will let you take the meat (boned) and cape out. the disease is transferred by the brain & marrow. be sure to check local regs.
RangerClay
CWD is never good. Hopefully you can contain the desease like we did in NY. I know your corn business is important but it is small potatoes if your deer herd is decimated.
Randy
I heard that too Martin. They are still trying to kill them all down this way. Hopefully for your sake, they don't find anymore of it out in the wild.
Ravin R10 man
this animal was in an enclosure...but all of a sudden the fence has breeches in it..and we got a CWD deer within two weeks after the farm was sold..where the previous owner always tested and never had a positive test...I dont like the sound of this...( this just sounds real fishy to alot of people up here)....if the second test is positive all feeding and baiting will be halted as of Jan 1st. ruttinbuc
Not against anybody making a dollar, but a ban on feeding and baiting would solve a lot of problems related to the practice. Not just CWD.

Well said. This whole thing reaks of the DNR being involved somehow. I am on the fence about baiting myself so it really won't matter to me but the way this has went down has been suspicious at best. Now the DNR will be having us eradicate the deer in the southern and northern parts of the state. I just don't get it.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Some food for thought. Texas feeds more corn and protein than all of the rest of the states that allow it combined. And we've been testing since 2002 and have never ever had a single case of CWD. Zero. Nada. None. Just sayin'...
gzilla45
Good news. Just read that the deer came back negative for CWD. http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/environment/article_bebab286-f378-11df-93ac-001cc4c03286.html

I was going to say just that!!...DNR has no factual data to show how it spreads..YET...they want to blame baiting and feeding...SO...how do you explian Texas then? PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
PA has not had a case of cwd but It did show up about 20 miles from our southern border. We are not allowed to bait or establish a feeding station. From what I read the game depts feel the baiting/feeding practice brings many deer in close proximity to each other. Here in PA there is talk of banning all urine based attractants as a cwd precaution. That would really tink.
Ravin R10 man
You said it well ridge runner...they "FEEL"...they in fact do not "know"...but yet they will kill all the deer in an enclosure...why not utiliyze the deer there for research tests, and actually learn how it spreads
