short hunt-smoked one with the ml'er

Did not have much time for an afternoon hunt after picking the kids up from school, but knew things can happen quick this time of the year. Got supper started, our youngest a shower and then went out to the new house and got changed. I was about to head to the stand when my daughter runs out with the phone, lowes called about specs on some interior doors for our new house, held me up a few minutes with what was already going to be a short hunt. With everything going on almost did not go, but felt like it was gonna be a good afternoon. Was right at 4 then, so quickly went to the closest stand, same stand I killed my buck out of last fall. Wind was SSE just right for that stand to watch the field edges in front of me, but supposed to switch right at dark to a NE wind which would still probably be ok.

Last weekend had some deer near the gully I jumped on the way to the stand less than 225 yards from the house, so I opened that side pasture up for the cows and think that may have proved to be a good move. Figured it might move the deer back a little more and have them stay on the high side of that gully or cut the edges of the field where we could see them or at least move them out where we might not bump them on the way. That gully is wooded with hardwoods and pretty thick in spots, have had many times I have bumped deer out of there on the way.

I get to the stand and put a cap on the 50 cal TC black diamond, which had been loaded since our opener the 6th. Was not much wind, let out a grunting sequence with a few tending grunts in the sequence at about 4:10. Nothing going on yet so at 4:28 another grunting sequence. About 2 minutes later I heard something behind me down the hill, raccoons had come through earlier, but did not sound like a raccoon or a squirrel, so I peaked real easily around the back of the tree and saw what I was pretty sure was a pretty good deer, was some saplings between me and him where he was standing near the bottom of the gully, did not take time to look real hard before grabbing the gun and getting turned and in a position to shoot. He was stopped and was looking up the trail leading to my stand, think he was looking for where the grunt came from and trying to get downwind. I could tell he was out past his ears, had decent mass, and looked like he had a good body size. I found his shoulder in my scope and aimed tight behind it where I thought it was a clear path between us and squeezed the shot. Everything happened pretty quick, was a bit uncertain of the shot at first because of brush I might not have seen in the scope, but thought I heard him fall over near our fence. Called the wife and let her know, then got down about 10 minutes later and went to the bottom of the hill and found hair and no blood at first where he had been standing. Went a yard or so up the trail and found good blood, went back to the house and grabbed a couple lights in case we would need them and got Christina. Blood trail a few yards in was like someone took a gallon paint can and poured red paint, knew he could not be far. Deer went maybe 65 yards if that far, the 240 grain xtp mag pushed by 120 grains of loose pyrodex did its job quite well and took out the top of his heart leaving a hole in it bigger around than my thumb. I had about a 3 yard drag to get him to the tractor bucket, he fell about 130 yards from our back door. About 3/4 of an inch shy of being as wide as the 8 I killed late last season but not too bad for a backyard buck.

Nice buck William! No use coming to Wisconsin, you're killing bigger bucks at home! LOL

LOL. Funny how it goes Randy, have not ranged the spot where he was standing yet, but think this buck was probably inside my comfortable shooting range with the bow. One of these days maybe the timing is gonna work out for me to get one with the bow.

Thanks everyone, this was my best deer with the ml'er to date.

Way to go William! You've been pulling some good deer off that place, congratulations!!!

Yep John, have had back to back years of taking pretty nice bucks for these parts, did not kill a single deer the season prior to last season(2008-2009 season) but did watch and video several bucks that year. Kind of nice with having a small place and all the crap we have had going on to see some of our efforts pay off.

Not too bad for a backyard buck at all, William! That is quite a nice 8 point my friend! Great account of the hunt, as well. You have to go with those instincts. Paid off big this time. Congrats again! :cool2:

Yep, I called him an 8 too Mike, Christina says he has 10 points. LOL. We checked him in as a 10, has kickers off both bases, one is probably scoreable, not sure on the other.

Sometimes those instincts sure do pay off, right place at the right time this time.
