stcif
Tyler (Diamond Archer 01) got his first buck last Sunday morning. He's 15 and last year he harvested a doe. This year the Marlin 30-30 did the job on a deer bigger than anything I've harvested in my 26 years of hunting. We got to our spot early and within 5 minutes I saw a smaller buck crossing the field. Tyler was digging in his backpack and I said, "Don't move, a deer". I then noticed the bigger buck behind him and also a doe. Both bucks were on this doe and as luck would have it the doe continued towards us. I told Tyler to stand up slowly. The big buck followed and gave Tyler a standing quartering to shot at about 120 yards, give or take a little. Tyler shot him off hand which was no easy task. The 150 grain Remington Core Lokt struck just forward of the right front shoulder and exited behind the left shoulder. Basically a perfect shot. I watched the deer through my binocs and knew he was hit, but I thought it might be a little high. The deer ran 20 yards or so, stopped, and then ran off out of sight. We waited what felt like two days, actually 15 minutes, and began to track him. Basically we entered the field and walked towards where the buck ran, only to see him laying in the field. He ran about 50 or 60 yards before dropping, but he dropped out of sight from where we were standing. He was dropped off at the taxidermist tonight. I've always wanted one for the wall. I guess I just had to wait until my son turned 15 to accomplish that. Tyler said he was glad his scope was only on 4 X because if he turned it up to 9 he would have gotten a better look at the rack which would have made him more nervous. The moral of the story, keep the scopes on low power I guess! He dressed out at 165 pounds so I figure he was a 200 pounder. He looked a little worn and beat up from the rut and probably lost a decent amount of weight in the past month or so.
