NS whitetail
I hunt on a powerline and I have some bucks come out at some long distances. Right now, I am shooting a .308, I am comfortable with it out to 200 yards, however ........... I am looking for a new rifle that can reach out there 200-300 yards with some pretty good accuracy and little drop. Does anyone have some advice on a good caliber rifle that I should look into ? Shaun_300
.308 isn't a bad caliber at all for those distances. A good scope and some practice shooting at those ranges to see what the rifle can do and find a good load for it and you'd be set to go. If you want a little more snort I'd opt for a .300 WSM or 7mm Mag.
stcif
For that distance I personally would stay with the .308. I am in the same boat as you and am in the market for a new rifle for about those same distances. Lately it's looking like the Browning A bolt is in the lead for what I really want. I thought about the tried and true 30-06 and 270, but since I have owned a .308 for years, I think I am going to stay with that caliber. huntnfish
.308 has plenty of punch left @ those yards. But if you are like me I sometimes come up with excuses to get new guns. 270 WSM will be my next caliber of deer rifle.:gun2:
Strut10
Keep your .308. Lil Strut10 has a .308 and when we go to the range, he wears out the 300 yard steel just for fun. The .308 is quite effective way beyond 300 yards if you know your yardage and ballistics.
m gardner
Unless you really want a new (heavier) rifle and enjoy getting kicked around stay with the 308 and buy a good rangefinder. Other than that the 7mm magnums are probably the way to go. Mark
doubleA
While the 308 Win is a nice little cartridge and is effective at the ranges you state, it certainly doesnt have a shoestring trajectory compared to others. You might want to look at the 270 WSM and 257 Wby, they are much flatter shooting than the 308 which inturn takes a little work out of the equation. They will have slightly more recoil than the 308 Win but less than the 7mm and .30 cal mags and still plenty of punch for deer size game wayyyyy out there. What ever you do, make sure you put in the time and effort to shoot at these longer ranges and get to know your abilitys and also the firearm's. Most rifles made to day are plenty accurate if fed a load it likes, it's up to the individual user to expound on this. Practice makes perfect in this case. Knowing a particular cartridge ballistics like the back of your hand can help alot. Teamed up with a good range finder and knowing bullets drops at various ranges and condition help to simplify things when precious seconds are going by at the moment of truth. OK, I am just rambling on here, but anywhos...... It sounds as if you are looking for an excuse for another rifle which in my opinion works for me!:cowboy:
NS whitetail
Thanks for the replies. I love my .308, however, I guess I never told you, it is a bolt action model 660 and only has an 18 1/2 inch barrel on it. That's why I 'm thinking of a new rifle with a longer barrel and a bit more punch. A few of my friends have the Browning 270 A bolt and swear by them, that is kind of what I am leaning towards as of now.
