Re: How many of you guys bowhunt?

i do........this was my third year, the first year i was lucky , i actually got to release on a turkey, but a clean miss....then the next year i was ready, took a nice sow 120lbs...almost got a doe that evening but she busted me, lol...this past season i passed on a yearling and i lost a nice mature doe, conclusion for that was a liver shot, then i jumped it, horrible learning lesson, even though i had waited hours, still wasnt long enough....i actually shot the other day, first time in a couple of months, was like i had never put her down.... cool.gif

Re: How many of you Ladies bowhunt?

I have been bow hunting since I was 17 (now 38) but have been seriously bowhunting the last 12 years. I have done very well bowhunting, getting at least 1 deer a year and this last year I got my elk with my bow. It is my favorite season. grin.gif

Um...I've kinda got mixed feelings on bow hunting. Not sure if I want to do that yet. But maybe I'll get around to it sometime. Just not too keen on having to track the deer half way around the world.

That's where the practice comes in. Do you know that most deer die faster and run less distance when properly hit with an arrow then with a bullet?

Re: How many of you Ladies bowhunt?

OKay...that may be true. But I guess I've seen my husband and his friends shoot and NEVER find their deer after much extensive tracking. and there was a good blood trail. I am probably just scared of injuring the animal and having it suffer. But you never know, I may try it after A LOT of practice first!!!!!!

I have the very same concerns you do, that is why I am going to try it turkey hunting first. The thought of me causing a deer to suffer needlessly would keep me up all night!

Isn't that wierd how we really aren't that concerned when it comes to turkeys? I think I'll try it on them first too.

Re: How many of you Ladies bowhunt?

a turkey is way harder to hit than a deer, you'd be foolish to "TRY IT" on a turkey first...they have alot less blood than a deer does and they can fly........wounding an animal is not what any of us want, it happens, even with guns .....do everything in your power to make a quick and clean kill, God forbid that animal doesnt die quick, look for it until you cant look anymore, like your husband does......it's bound to happen to every bowhunter, experienced or inexperienced.......i'd take a turkey over a deer anyday, that is just me....kinda hit a soft spot there,lol.......the turkey is the most amazing, most beautiful creature God made, at least in my eyes, whatever you decide, be smart about it, bigger target, new shooter, just makes sense.........not that you wouldnt be able to take a bird, i'm not saying that at all, with practice, anyone is capable of hitting about anything....

Re: How many of you Ladies bowhunt?

HuntnMa,

I am sorry if it sounded like I was going out there to hunt without any bow hunting skills. I did lots of practicing last year, but it is too cold and snowy to do any practicing now. I will be back out brushing up as soon as the snow goes away (if it ever does! LOL) If I am hitting the bullseye like I was last year I will be trying it with the turkey. smile.gif

Too-pointer,

Bring it on!!! LMAO

[/ QUOTE ] There is absolutely no way I would TRY to hunt with a bow without a mega amount of practice first. And yes, a turkey is beautiful and very smart. But somehow I find it easier to shoot one of them than a deer. I'm not sure why. I would never want ANY animal to suffer so that's why I'm not too keen on bow hunting anyway. Didn't mean to make it sound like I didn't care about turkeys.

Re: How many of you Ladies bowhunt?

oh ladies,i'm not saying y'all would go in there without practicing..what i was trying to say is bascially a turkey is just as special as a deer and it's alot smaller of a target.....i'd say start with the bigger critters and make your way down to the smaller ones....even hitting bullseye constantly doesnt mean you'd be able to hit a moving bullseye, lol....i missed and i was nailing it everytime, lol....i know everyone here are more than capable of killing a deer with a bow...even good shots sometimes are not found, this past season my sister shot a nice buck....we looked, all of a sudden this downpour came through, i'd say 1.5 inches in less than an hour, there was no blood/sign anywhere after that, the storm came and went ,just like that buck........it's sad, but it's just part of it....i'm just afraid if y'all try it on a bird, the chances of wounding are higher, much higher,y'all might be turned off to bowhunting all together and y'all would be missing out.i almost gave up bowhunting after the second year because of all the hunters i had to help or that i heard about looking for a deer that they lost, i lost a huge hog, it was just depressing, but for the life of me, i couldnt give it up....it's something so fricking awesome when everything works out right....and like i said earlier, trailin' is so much fun, especially when it leads you to your harvest....good luck ladies.... smile.gif

LOL, you're right confidence has never been a problem for me. You are one of the few folks here that realized what the statement of being The Greatest Bowhunter Alive is all about......my confidence level. The way I see it, if a person doesn't have a high level of it, then they don't have any business using a bow. On the flip-side I don't use a gun because I know I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn from the inside with a bullet.

Re: How many of you Ladies bowhunt?

I gotta agree with huntnma here. A turkey is harder to hit right than a deer for sure. I would use the shotgun and practice like crazy thru the summer with the bow for deer. Then next spring bowhunt turkeys. I am not saying you cannot do it Linda, but I would wait. An I hear ya bout this weather. It is -7f here right now...???????? Cold for March. I to am looking forward to shooting my bow!!!!!!!
