2 Hour Stalk...

I just put a 2 hour stalk on an empty field. :D

Around 8:30 I got up to get another cup of coffee and just happened to get up at the right time as a deer was getting up out of his bed to shake the rain off.

I snuck out to the pole barn to grab my binoculars, but by the time I got back, the deer was gone. I kept watching in the general area and I saw the deer again. I couldn't tell what it was but I decided to go get a closer look.

I got to the edge of my neighbor's field, grunted and rattled a little, to which he stood up and looked my way. It was a buck, but I couldn't tell how good he was. I crept closer and got a good look at his rack. His left side was a typical 8pt frame, an inch or so outside of his ears. His right side, however, was a single foot long spike, as near as I could tell.

I decided to continue the stalk so I crawled east but noticed the wind was switching, so I went back west. The deer was southwest of me.

Long story short, it took me probably an hour to get to where I thought I might get a shot on this thing only to find that he had slipped out at some point of my stalk. I got back to the house and noticed it was 11:00.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. :D

chris i figured you would have already had a buck down! how many does have you piled up so far, any luck this week?

Not even close, bud.... :D I've seen 1 possible shooter this year, he was about 200 yards away cruising. Best deer I've seen in range this year was a dinky 6 pt. I shot a little doe back in early November. No luck at all this week. Been out everyday but today and Tuesday.

Sounds like fun Chris. Maybe the gardens will work out better next year for you and make for easier stalking.;)

Next year I should have my Oliver back, so I plan on planting beans and corn and leaving them up.

I couldn't go out Saturday morning due to a function my wife had at work, so I decided to take my Encore out around 3 in the afternoon. There was a strong NW wind blowing my scent into my field so I decided to stalk my neighbor's field. My neighbor's field, as some will recall, is where I used to live so I know the hot spots where the deer always bed down.

There's tall pines that border the north side of the lot, so I slipped in under the pines and started walking the lane. I got probably 30 yards on the lane and looked into a spot where I've jumped many deer, and sure enough, I see Ol' Mr. Halfrack. :D

I was probably 7 to 10 yards from this deer. He was looking right at me. I tried to pick him up in the scope, but he was so close I had a tough time seeing him. I put the gun down and dialed the variable scope all the way down to 3 power and looked again. I could see a tine or two, but not any part of the body to get a shot. The brush in front of me was only goldenrod so I wasn't afraid to shoot if I could only find some vitals.

I took a step or two back and forth trying to get a better view and I fully expected this buck to get up and start running, but I guess he figured I couldn't see him--he was right, to an extent.

I finally dared to take another step to the south, to which I could see the base of his neck. I held the cross hairs a touch low and fired. Through all the smoke, I couldn't see anything, but I was pretty sure the deer didn't run away. As I knealt and reloaded I heard the deer thrashing around. I was hoping it was death throes, but as I approached the deer, I could see I just broke his neck. I was pretty surprised that the shot, at that range, didn't kill him, so I walked up to him and finished it.

So here he is. Certainly not the biggest deer I've ever shot, but I have a little history with him, and what a thrill it is to do a spot and stalk. I know it's not for everyone, but man, I get a rush out of sneaking around, trying to beat them on their level.

Here's a picture of his broken off antler. I have no idea what was broken off, but this deer was a fighter. He had 2 cuts on his head that were scabbed over and in the above picture, you can see a cut under his right eye that was healed over.

Congrats bro!

Do you think that deer was hurt last year, and that caused his weird right side? That looks more like an old injury type rack to me. You could almost use it to roast marshmallows though! :D

Give his left side a good looking over when you skin him. He was probably bumped by a car in the spring.

Either that or Don dropped off one of his Strut Ranch freaks at your place.

All hail the Srub Buck King! Congrats Chris!

The only injuries I saw on that deer were the ones on his face. :D

I have an old, old shed from way back in the 90's I found in the field where my new house now sits. That shed had a goofy spike similar to that. Maybe the genetics are still in the area.

Congratulations Chris. Cool you are able to hunt your old place still. Was the buck bedded near the pines, back towards the middle of your old place in the thick stuff?

Sounds like you might want to consider see throughs on your ml'er if you are gonna be doing that type stalking. Gotta love gettin close to them on the ground. Definitely rewarding taking deer on your own ground too.

Way in the back, right in the middle where they always bed down.

Thats cool Chris, think I got pictured where you are talking about. Don't know how far back your new house sits in relation to the old one. Guessing that was probably less than 100 yards from your back door of the old house. Buck I killed this fall with the ml'er was almost that close to the back door where he expired. lol.

Back door to the end of the lot was just a touch over 250 yards William, so this deer was probably 230-235 off the back of the house. New house is just about the same distance back from the old house.

Here's a test of your memory--do you remember that old marine egine that was on the back of the lot? This deer was about 15 yards from that old engine.

Did not realize your lot was quite that deep, from the back of the house. Don't remember the engine bud, must have been closer to the left side though if you had just left the pines. Seems I do remember a rub you showed me near the back left corner though.

Yep, left side as you look back off the deck.

I've got some old pictures of the lot somewhere. If I get time, I'll pinpoint the area.
