too_pointer
Hello all. With any luck, I might be able to get another rifle by next years hunting season. I have read alot about the 300 WSM, and the 300 mag. This would be my last rifle for sure, and want something that would be able to take down any big game I might be able to hunt. Moose, I doubt it, but who knows, elk, deer, bear, ect. I am concered about heavy recoil, and wonder how nasty they kick. Does the 300 WSM kick less than the 300 mag ? Would it shoot pretty flat at long ranges ? I don't know how I could pull it off without selling my house LOL. Any help would be super. I'm looking at a Rem. Model 700. :gunsmilie: too_
Strut10
Mike.............. Any of the .300 Mag's will lay low with authority anything that walks North America. All of the .300 Mag's are flat shooting and hard hitting enough to collect medium and big game at, basically, any range you can reliably hit them at. The perception of the recoil of the .300 Mag's is subjective and will be unique to the individual. There will be no noticable difference in felt recoil between the Win Mag and WSM in like rifles. Get a rifle that fits you and has a good stock design (the 700 BDL's are some of the worst in my experience) and you will be pleasantly surprised by how easy they are to shot. My sister just got a Weatherby Vanguard .300 Win Mag and can run a box of factory 180 grainers through it at a sitting without complaint. She's about a size 4 or 6 tops. As for the difference between the .300 Win Mag and the .300WSM.......... there is very little if you are shooting factory loads.......except availability and price. The WSM shells will be around 2X more pricey and not available in as many places as the Win Mag. Wally-by-Golly here has Federal 180 grain .300 Win Mags for $16.97/box. I can hardly load them for that. If you reload, the Win Mag will outrun the WSM by 100 fps or so in all bullet weights.
Shaun_300
Dad has a Remington 700 BDL in .300 Win Mag and I have a Browning BLR in .300 WSM. I'd definitely say my WSM kicks less than the Win Mag, and it's a lighter gun too. My brother has the same gun as me in a .270 Win, the recoil is basically identical between the two of them. Ballistically the .300 Win Mag and .300 WSM are identical. The WSM has the upper hand by the slightest bit. The WSM is also a short action which is nice! I love mine, I use it for deer and moose. Hasn't let me down yet!

But only in factory loads. The Win Mag is definitely capable of more "wringing out" if one handloads.
too_pointer
thank you Thanks much for your info. I guess I should of mentioned that price is certainly a concern too. I found out that the Rem. 700 doesn't make a 300 WSM also. I think anyways !! I want a camo stock, maybe they do on a different stock. Thanks again too_

Yep, forgot to mention that. The Win Mags greater case capacity definitely has the upper hand when reloading.:gun2:
redkneck
Don makes some good points on price. I pay 3x the money for my Wby 300 mag as I could pay for 300 Win mags. If you are going to shoot very much, I'd take that into consideration. The action on the short mags is sweeter though if you are going to a bolt rifle. Shaun_300
I was just looking through my photobucket album and came across this video of me shooting my .300 WSM about 3 years ago. Gives you an idea about the recoil. This gun weighs 6lbs 12oz bare. I was probably 155lbs at the time, packed on a few pounds since then. too_pointer
Nice vid LOL. Didn't seem to be too bad on you. After reading about ammo, I looked up alot on type, and prices, and man, you guys are spot on with prices. I don't think I could afford the ammo for a WSM, wow. I don't reload, and probably never will, but have a friend who does. too_
bowana
I own both the 300wsm and 300 win mag. Seems like its easier to find accurate loads for the 300 win mag. But, the 300 wsm fits in a short action and works well in compact rifles. Its a wash......just my opinion. Unless your a reloader...then the 300 win mag would be my choice. Obviously I could not decide...so I bought both.

huntinsonovagun
I stand corrected....closer to 3400ish.:surrender: Still impressive...
Tecumseh
I don't think the recoil on my 300 WSM is all that bad,My 450 Marlin kicks worse than the 300 ever thought about.
Leo
If recoil and shell expense are concerns, a 30-06SPR might be a better choice for you in the long run.
