NY Crossbow wishers...

Re: NY Crossbow wishers...

This is from an article on the home page:

Nicholson also notes that "The debate among hunters about legalization of crossbows is reminiscent of a similar debate on the 1977-78 legalization of compound bows. The technological leap from recurve bows to compound bows was much greater than the current move to crossbows. (Crossbows actually are more "primitive" than compound bows, having been around since the fourth century BC.) Crossbows provide the opportunity for older archers to participate in archery deer hunting longer. They also introduce additional hunters into the sport of archery. It is likely that many of them will seek increased archery hunting challenges and change to compound or recurve bows. Recruiting new archers and retaining older ones is a positive event for all hunters."

Re: NY Crossbow wishers...

Other than the author of this article, who is this Bob McNitt anyway? Is there some reason why he should have any more credibility than any other average Joe Schmoe posting on this forum? The whole article was a bit short on facts and real heavy on opinion. I wonder why Mr. McNitt didn't go over to Ohio where crossbows have been legal since 1982 and look at some real data that isn't just comprised of a couple of years. He would have seen that early data in Ohio was quite similar to Georgia. Cross bow harvests started off in a very modest fashion also (3782 - bow to 446 - crossbow). By the end of 1993, some 9 years later, the crossbow harvest had overtaken the bow harvest (7708 - bow to 9401 - crossbow). Apparently there really is no pent-up mob of cross-bow enthusiasts that are jumping right into x-bow use as soon as they are legalized, but the popularity grows over time. My guess, and that's all it is, is that as time goes on, more and more gun hunters start recognizing this as a way to squeeze into the bow season.

And whats wrong with that? Are you saying that you or someone else can't go to Ohio and have a good time bowhunting because of the crossbow hunters??

It is very hard to explain this to someone who is not dedicated and committed to the sport, and I guess there is no way that I can really explain that to you.

You might want to use your Moderator powers and revise this statement......that is unless Iowa really elongated their season dates and changed the October through January season last year.

Re: NY Crossbow wishers...

Horst-

Yeah, re-reading that statement, I realize that that was a bit over the edge. It's just that, at times it is hard for me to understand why I would have to spend so much time on an archery forum, defending archery. The idea of a bowhunter promoting any weapon other than a bow during archery seasons is so foriegn to me that I guess I sometimes forget that I am talking to other bowhunters. We are currently embroiled in a pretty hot issue of an attempted muzzleloader season grab here in NY and I guess the subject of other weapons invading bowhunting seasons has become a real hot button for me. I'm afraid you just happened to walk into this discussion at a bad time for some New Yorkers who might be a bit more tolerant at any other time.

However, all that does not excuse that statement. So, for that, I apologize.

Re: NY Crossbow wishers...

Dont worry about it Doc.Your right, I dont know how crossbows would effect the bowseason.Im just guessing. You dont know either, and your guesse is a little different then mine.I really dont think allowing them would have all that much of an impact on the people who are currently bowhunting, you do.The only way to tell would be to legalize them and see what happens.

Re: NY Crossbow wishers...

For all those in NY who support crossbows!!

As I have said before last year we introduced Bill #9746 to ease regulations on the handicapped crossbow issue. Unfortunately the bill died in EnCon. We are still working very hard and we will have a new bill number very soon. If you are truely serious about helping our cause please PM me and I will put you in touch with the people leading this charge. We could always use more help.

Thank you

Ranger
