Turkeygirl
That's about how many geese I saw this AM.... Saw the geese yesterday piled up in a corn and alfalfa field on the land hunt. This AM I go in there, get all set up. A small flock, maybe 8 birds came in, landed out about 50 yards in front of me then 10 minutes later flew back to the lake. Well little while later a flock of maybe 10-15 birds flies in and lands in the alfalfa about 100 yards from me....that's when it all went wrong. About every flock that came in would head right in to me, then veer off and land in the alfalfa...I probably watched several hundred birds this morning to this....Finally at 10am I moved, they flew off. I moved up and set up there. Had a few more flocks fly over, take a look, but not land....First couple hours always seem to be the best anyway. So later on going to take a drive, see if they are back in that field and go back in the AM...Will have a west instead of northwest wind but I hope they still land in that same spot.... Talk about frustrating:hammer1: Gotta luck it though:yes:
92xj
What shells are you shooting? 50 yard head shots at geese will drop them dead.
92xj
Also, what calls are you using and how are you calling them?
Turkeygirl
Using Federal #1s our of my 20 ga. Well I prefer close shots...for me 50 yards is too far and I'd rather make a good shot, then risk missing or wounding a bird. I have a flute call and a wooden Faulk's call....I can do the typical honk and a couple others...still learning.
92xj
The biggest thing that helped me in calling was to purchase an expensive high quality goose call. I started with a Market Hunter from Foiles and now have a Showtime, Coles Carnage, Strait Meat Honker, and my favorite, a High Plains Honker in flamed hedge wood. It is by far the easiest call to blow and plenty loud enough. They are very pricey but the ease of use and the sound they make, make them totally worth it. Once you have yourself a call that you like and is easy to use. Use this site. Listen to it everyday, practice back and forth with it. I practiced hours everyday for 8 months before I ever hunted with the calls. http://www.callersforchrist.com/hiscall/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=48&Itemid=47 Also, you might want to step up to a 3" BB with your 20ga. RTF
20 gauge for geese ? Ruth you need a 12 gauge that takes 3 1/2 shells. 50 yards then will be a walk in the park.
Turkeygirl
Went out this AM....bitter cold west wind, snow....I don't think the geese came off the lake by the time I left at 10am...I was cold....Saw a few flocks flying high...couple low but not like yesterday. Yeah 92....my calls are relatively cheap. I'll probably step up to something better for next year...
