.30-06 or .308

For all intents and purposes they are the same.

They are only seperated by 200 or so fps. That said, I would opt for the 06. Theres more ammo choices, they are a touch faster/flatter, every corner store in hunting country will have ammo for sale if you forget yours. There arent a whole lot of reasons to go one way or another. In fact I'm not sure your question can really be answered. Which is better?.....Neither.

I have one of each and like them both. Recoil is pert much the same, bullet diameter is the same, fps. is pert much the same. The deer wont know the difference.

confused.gifNot quite sure what you mean here. But neither would really have an edge in the brush. The rifle would be the deciding factor there. Smaller rifles being easy to handle in the thick stuff but I think either cal. would be available in compact rifles.

Re: .30-06 or .308

Like wacoyote said, they are virtually identical. Using bullets up to 180 grains there is hardly any difference (~100 fps). The trajectory is about identical with same bullets and energy levels are close enough that it would not matter which one was used. Both will handle deer, bear, elk, moose, or just about anything else in this country.

The .308 can be had on a short action so it can be a more compact gun. Ammo availability is very close to the same. The .308 Winchester has the benefit of being a current military cartridge, and good quality surplus ammo is available for target shooting. The .308 Winchester is the most popular sniper cartridge in the military. It can hold its own out to distances that most hunters can only dream about connecting with the target.

Sorry SCbuckmaster, neither has an edge in brush. They shoot the same bullets about the same velocity, so how is one better in brush?

The only advantage the .30-06 has is the availability of factory loaded 220 gr ammo. I don't consider the 220 to be a great performer in the .30-06, so its really not that big of a deal. Load either with 150, 165, or 180 gr bullets and you are ready for just about anything on this continent let alone any deer.

As AJ said they are as close to equal as you can get. Get the rifle that fits you the best. Some guys like the short action (308)--while other like the long action (30-06).

I personally use the 30/06 for everything----elk, deer, bear, antelope, sheep & mtn goats. I use 180 grains bullets mostly. But if the short action fits you better the 308 would do everyhting that the 06 would.

Get the best scope you can afford----IMO it's more important than the rifle. I've got a VarX-III 2.5 x8 Leupold. If I were buying one today, it would be the VarX-II in 3x9--40mm. Good Luck--CB
