Strut10
Got 3 pics of an 8 pointer this fall that had particularly white feet. I seemed to remember pics from last winter of a deer with white feet. So I looked it up. Sure amazed me how this guy progressed from an average 6 pointer to a dandy 8 pointer in one year. Gained a lot more width than I'd have thought he would have. Far as I know, he still lives. Be cool to see if I get more pics of him with 20011 antlers. He's apt to be a brute. 92xj
He grew up big time. If it wasn't for the feet I would say a different deer, but those socks are pretty dang unique.
ruttinbuc
Just shows to go ya! Let em walk and they can become quite the buck.
hoosierhunter
lol I've got a couple guys that just blew up as well except mine are from 2.5 to 3.5. Gotta love adding 60 inches of antler!
Ravin R10 man
getting some age on those bucks is the key

Was thinking the same thing. Cool you were able to identify him Don, should be a really nice buck next fall if he is still around.
AceArcher
It is hard to convince the average recreational hunter not to shoot those 1.5 year old bucks. I can't tell you how many of these deer that they guys that gun hunt our farm kill every year. Its a shame b/c the next year they would like that and then at 3.5 would be close to 150 inches every time...but yard to make people let them walk. Shaun_300
That's a nice buck Don, he'll have a real nice set on him next year, or better yet in two years!
mike13candace
This is why everyone should let them grow older. Nice pictures.
Tominator
Gary Ault's a genius? Is that a sticker coming off his right G2 or just the way the light is hitting those leaves?
Strut10
Gary Ault's a genius? No. I am. The deer is standing in the middle of a 100+ acre virtual sanctuary. Alt's abortion of a plan would have that deer killed where is, as is. Is that a sticker coming off his right G2 or just the way the light is hitting those leaves? No sticker. He's a clean 8. I've got 2 other pics in that series of him working the scrape. No junk.

Don't be fooled by thinking that buck stays in the same 100 acres at any given time. 1 square mile is more like a whitetail bucks home range (640 acres), Younger bucks tend to travel more, being pushed around by the more mature bucks during the rut.....
woolybear
That is a pretty impressive growth spurt right there. It would be darn near impossible to match up consecutive years sheds from him and call them a match that's for sure. Would be nice to see him unrecognizeable again in the same way next year. Hope you can keep tabs on him into next season.

It was a repeat from last year. It was about 2 does that Alsheimer was trying to harvest for the NY DNR. One doe was 9 years old, and the other was 7? or 12? I don't remember. Anyway, these does were radio collared and they showed a map of where these does wandered over the course of their long lives. One doe consistently wandered 900 acres, the other one had a tighter home range of like 600 acres? Their "core" areas were a little tighter, and the core area got tighter as they aged. It was a really cool graphic. Have to think a buck's range would probably be a bit wider during the rut, don't really know.

Read that core areas will vary depending on the obvious factors, such as food and cover, but typically a core area is figured to be a sq mile for does and bucks outside the rut. Think Tom is dead on with what he says about young bucks being pushed out of areas by mature bucks too. Have read that young bucks(yearlings) in most cases will most often get ousted or run off by momma does too, natures way of slimming the chances of inbreeding. ruttinbuc
When the bachelor groups of summer start breaking up you don't know where these bucks will show up. The pecking order is sorted out and the mature bucks seek their own territory after being pushed out by the dominant bucks. There is always a buck or two that disappears who might return some time later. The little bucks you see banging heads and hanging out together have no clue but will eventually go through the same process.
Strut10
Don't be fooled by thinking that buck stays in the same 100 acres at any given time. Agreed. But don't think for a second they ALL don't know where to come (from far and wide) when the shooting starts opening morning. I used to let a group of guys hunt my property with flintlocks. Season comes in about 2 weeks after general firearms season closes. Typically, their first-day drive would move 40-70 deer off my property. Those are deer that know where to go when it's time to hunker down.

It'll be cool to see pictures of this fella next year....
