E-Readers - Yay or Nay?

Ross, we just bought my sister a Kindle from Amazon.com and I've had the chance to try it out. Really like it. Easy to read and use.

I doubt I would want one due to the fact that they're reportedly supposed to "keep people awake". There have been reports that the bright screen actually deters sleep. Since I read at night, right before I go to sleep, I think an e-reader would actually be opposite of what I need.

If you are looking for strictly an e-reader then the kindle is the way to go. If you think she may want to do more, I suggest an iPad. I have had my iPad since around April and love it. I use it as much, if not more than I use my laptop or desktop (I am on it right now). The first thing I did when I got it was buy Michael Waddells book. The reader part of it is nice, I use the ibooks app it came with, along with the kindle app, and I recently stared using the google books app that came out a coupe weeks ago. If reading is all it is going to be used for, then like I said go for the kindle, it is a lot less money, you can get the wi-fi only for $139 or the free3g-wifi for $189 (the one I would get), compared to $499 for the iPad. The reading experience is a bit better, and it is a lot smaller and less bulky than the iPad making easier to hold and putting less stress on your hands and arms when holding it up. Amazon has a lot more books to choose from too, I think I have more books on the kindle app than on the ibooks app.

Thanks everyone - can't afford the Ipad so I was looking at the Kindle or the Pandigital. She wants the wifi connectivity for email but mainly wants to read books on it. What is the average cost to download a book to one of these things?

Don't think you can check email with the Kindle. We've got one I really like it. The screen on the Kindle is electronic paper instead of an LCD so it really has the least glare and consumes less power than an LCD reader.

The WiFi makes downloading books much easier. You can download to your computer Kindle app and then sync it to the Kindle via USB.

Books are between $3 - $9 depending on the book. Some also have text to audio. I haven't tried the audio feature yet but I sure like reading on it.

Nice thing about the Amazon account is once you buy the book you can redownload again free if you need to later.

Like Leo said, NO email on the Kindle.

Actually I need to correct myself on this one because I just tried it.

If you have access to your email via a browser (web based). Then yep you can check your email on your kindle.

Press the MENU, Select EXPERIMENTAL and then open BROWSER.

Then you type in the address for your web based email and login.

Kind of clunky but it does work!
