835 barrel could stand polishing.

Re: 835 barrel could stand polishing.

I have polished my barrels when I cut longer forcing cones in them. I have the barrel hone tool. It works just fine to polish the bore. I use Do-Drill cutting oil with this and go through the stones to make the bore shine better than new. Its cheaper than the Flex Hone set.

I have not used the Flex Hone system. If you do go that route, be sure to get the Flex Hone Oil that is designed for it. they say it will br ruined if you don't use it. It works faster than the honer I have but its also $150 for a set.

I have used steel wool over a brush to remove heavy fouling, but it won't do a lot to smooth the interior of the barrel. I did use the Scotch Brite over a jag that I made and a cleaning rod. It didn't polish that much. Its a great cleaner though. You may call your gunsmith and ask how much he charges to polish the bore. If you only have one to do, paying him $40 or so is more cost effective than buying a honer. Polishing the bore will help patterns. If you are trying to get the best possible turkey patter, polishing may help. do not have the 'smith cut a long forcing cone. That gives a good dispersal across the pattern. Not what you want for turkeys.

Re: 835 barrel could stand polishing.

aj I know im not the original poster to this question but im really interested in the topic. is this something that is worth while?? will it help all guns?? Is it hit and miss or are results usually the same for most factory bores? sorry for all the questions just trying to figure out if it would be worth it i mean paying a smith to do it.

Re: 835 barrel could stand polishing.

The Flex Hone will make a noticable difference in the finish on most factory bores. When the barrel is chrome lined, it does not do any good. Will it help you hit more targets or bag more birds? I would lean towards no. Usually if you are going to miss, you are going to miss. Its not due to the pattern, but the shooter placing the pattern in the wrong spot. Unless my barrel patterned very poorly or had bad plastic fouling from wads, I would not waste the money on it.

Re: 835 barrel could stand polishing.

Got to Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or something similar. Get yourself some 000 & 0000 Steel Wool. Start off by putting the 000 on the end of a cleaning rod. Attach the other end to a drill. Make sure you lubricate the heck out of the steel wool, whether you use Rem Lube, WD-40, etc.. Put the steel wool end in to the barrel and start going up and down in the barrel with the drill going very slow. After you do that, repeat the process with the 0000 Steel Wool. Oh yeah, make sure you clean the barrel before you attempt to polish it.

My friends and I have been doing this to our shotguns for a while now and when it is finished looking through the barrel almost blinds you, that's how polished it is. A local gunsmith actually told me how to do this which shocked me cause he could have easily made $40 off of me to do it for me. However, he recommended it, and the rest is history.

It does definitely help from what I have seen. Even the stock choke in my 835 shot better because of it. However, I have since invested in the Nitro/RHino combo, so performance isn't even an issue anymore lol. But I will kepp polishing the barrel.

Re: 835 barrel could stand polishing.

This is a quote from Nitro Company on how to get the best patterns.

[ QUOTE ]

The bore (inside) of the barrel is the most important part of your shotgun. We recommend a highly polished bore without lengthening the forcing cone. Our goal in a pattern is center pattern and center density. We are interested in a 10" - 12" circle with quarter pie sections because of the way a turkey’s head is constantly moving. A 30" circle with percentages is used for flying birds, such as duck hunting. For a spring turkey hunter, this is a thing of the past. To gain center density, you would first have to start with an ultra clean barrel. This means no oil, water, plastic fouling, powder fouling or lead fouling in the barrel. When testing, you should always run a dry patch over a bore brush attached to a cleaning rod down the barrel between every shot to give the shells that you are testing a fair chance. By not doing this, you will lose 10 to 15 percent or more of your center core pattern. The smoother the bore, which will have less interference for the shot and wad, the better your center pattern will be. This is why we highly recommend polishing the barrel. Weather, such as wind, humidity, dew point, rain, and dense air will open your center pattern. The ideal condition is no wind, 60 degrees temperature, with no humidity or very low dew point. This is when all your testing should be done. After finding the load and shot size that gives you the ultimate performance while testing in ideal conditions, you should also test in all different weather conditions so that you know what your pattern is doing. Such as in the rain, high humidity or high dew point.

Re: 835 barrel could stand polishing.

Barrels straight from the factory will usually have tiny imperfections in the smotthness of them. Nothing huge or dangerous, but the majority of smooth bore barrels aren't actually that smooth. Polishing the barrel gets rid of those tiny imperfections and will leave the inside of your barrel with a mirror like finish. Doing this eliminates all imperfections that could screw up your pattern. By having a clean and polishe dbarrel you will get a better overall pattern and a lot better pattern density.

Re: 835 barrel could stand polishing.

No problem bud. I ha dno clue what anyone was talking about when they mentioned polishing barrels before either and I personally thought it was just a gimmick for some company to make money. However, I must attest that even the stock choke in my 835 shot 100% better after polishing my barrel. The Hastings & the Star Dot did great too, I can hardly wait to see what the Nitro/Rhino combo does cool.gif
