I got both of mine with my Mathews Classic this year, before the rut season even started.

Big Blacktail down :)

  Quote
Well 2 nights ago, my buddy Wilf called just after I got home from work and asked me if I wanted to go hunting.

I was so tired and sore from scrapping this dang house I was working on, that I had to decline. But..I said I'd drive down later just to watch, and in case he got something and needed a hand with it.

Diana, I and the dog decided to go down to the farm to watch around 7:30pm, and just before I went out the door I said "Oh geesh, I'd better bring my bow, arm-gaurd and trigger, just in case"

So with that, I grabbed my stuff, threw on a Realtree jacket(just blue-jeans on the bottom), and off we went.

Well, on the way down the driveway towards the barn, I look across the ravine where the little creek runs past the farm, and standing on the hill, headed down to the creek is a nice buck, along with 2 younger friends. :)

So I quickly park the car, get my gear on and try to do a stalk on this buck. I had no idea at this time how big it really was.

I made a circle low so he wouldn't see me, and sneaked up to the bank behind the one barn. The 2 little guys were already half way down the hill, but I couldn't see the big boy. I had to show myself to the other 2 deerin order to see the big one, who was still browsing near the top of the hill.

I ranged him at 35yrds, drew my bow, and thought I'd better wait for a better shot. I waited a few minutes to see what he was going to do, but the 2 little bucks who had already spotted me, decided to go back up and across the top of the hill, headed for the driveway. Guess who followed them...LOL

So off I went to try to intercept them in the gully, right below the driveway, where they were headed. I had to do a big circle so as not to be seen, but when I slowing came across the driveway to look down into the gulling, the deer had apparently gotten a bit ahead of me, and were already heading uphill toward the driveway about 50 yards up. By this time, they had all seen me, so as non-chellantly as I could, I just walked straight up the driveway along the fence, not even looking directly at them, but keeping them in my perifial vision. I made it up almost to where there trail crosses the driveway, stopped and watched as the 2 little guys passed in front of me headed to the neighbour's orchard. I lost sight of the big guy in the tall broom and weeds, but then, there he was just going behind a tree not 15 yrds from me. I pulled back my bow as he stepped out into the clear on the other side, steadied my pin on him, and THWACK. :)

He tried to hobble over to the other fence where his buddies had headed, but I knew from the way he was walking that he wasn't going to be hopping that fence. Sure enough, he made it to the fence, with his buddies already on the other side, but couldn't go any further and just laid down.

I watched him for a bit and decided to just leave him die and walk back down to tell Diana I got him. I turned to walk away, but he got back on his feet and started walking up along the fence. He got in behind a big fur tree that was between us. He didn't come out the other side so I skuck up behind the tree and peaked around. There he was on the ground again, but moaning like crazy. So, I waited until his head was down, and got in closer to him and at a better angle and gave him another arrow into his underside right where his heart would be. Another THWACK, a lot of kicking and thrashing, and he was out for the count in seconds.

I went over and dragged him all the way back down to the truck and really surprised Diana...LOL

One of the nicest Blacktails I've ever gotten, and the biggest on this farm, so far.

Blacktail Buck #2 :))

Blacktail Buck #2 :)) What a morning. The 3rd frosty morning in a row here, so I just had to get out. My buddy Wilf got down there a bit earlier than me, because I had to drop Diana off at work. I thought Wilf would be sitting in the perfect spot this morning, but it turns out I was :)

I didn't even have my seat set up in the blackberry blind, and looked up to see a doe standing in front of me. I waited for her to pass by, and continued setting up and relaxing in my chair. I then stood up for about 20 minutes or so, so I could see down the field if anything was coming. I got tired of standing, so sat back down. I was sitting there for a few minutes, and decided to reach down and move my quiver aside so it wasn't right at my feet. Did that, looked up, and there standing at 15 yrds smelling the buck scent I put down on the way in, was this huge brute.

Needless to say, :tt1: I got buck fever instantaneously and rushed the shot, nailing him a bit high and right...but he only went 60 yards, stopped, and turned around to look back and figure out what just happened. He stood there for a long, long time, and I was feeling sorry for him, but couldn't get a second shot off to finish him off, without spooking him off. He finally walked slowly to the edge of the field before laying down on the edge of the field and expiring.

Wilf says I have horseshoes .... I think he might be right ..:)

Wow Steve....I have been long lost during this season, spending as much, and actually more, time in the woods this year than ever, and i missed your posts!!! What awesome blacktails!!!!!

Congrats on your two harvests bud!!! They look pretty darn good!

i have been videoing all of my hunts and haven't got great footage of any kills but one doe...

And my brother in law dusting a tree...

So far i have dusted 3 does, a nice tom, and a coyote with my bow this year (i have footage of a 2 1/2 year old 8 ptr walking within 12 yds of this bedded yote, and a fork horn that walked within 20 yds of it too)...I have some extraordinary footage of a tiny fawn in full blown spots on Oct 30th, a pile of 2.5 year old 8 ptrs, one 3.5 year old 11 ptr saturating his tarsals and raking the **** out of a tree the size of a 2 liter bottle at 18 yds (which i submitted to North American White Tail and am waiting on them to let me know if i can post it on you tube) and what i think may be an antlered doe which was followed up by a 6 ptr...Oh, and i missed a giant 10 ptr with my muzzle loader on the first day of shotgun season...Giant may exagerate it, but he easily went in the low to mid 150's...ooops, and i have footage of my wife missing several deer during shotgun season as well...

Needless to say, its been a great season...Its not over yet, so i'll post all videos and pics when the fat lady sings.

My early urban archery season was awesome! I laid down 3 does in the first week! I hammered a cull buck for my buddy who didnt want to waste a tag on a "cull' so management buck ate good! Lately things have been slow w/ the weather acting crazy.Urban archery doesnt go out til march 23 so i'm just taking it easy and then come out fresh again, plus turkey season comes in a couple wks later so i can be warmed up for that.

After a stint in the traditional archery world, and another frustrating wounded deer, I decided to make trad archery a fun summertime hobby and leave the real hunting to the compound. We owe it to the animals to have the best odds of a quick kill when we release an arrow...so at least for me, its the compound. Kudos to those who have mastered the traditional bows, I envy you! Anyhoo.. heres my buck shot Oct 29th. I got in my trusty permanent big oak stand...which I had been meaning on replacing the ladder hence barely made it up that morning without breaking the steps. It was a while before it got light, I heard a deer close hitting the branches and got a glimpse of the outline once but it was still dark. The deer made its way to the tall CRP. After it finally got light, I did my re-assurance checks with the rangefinder...hit the grunt call a few times followed by a 20 second rallte bag sequence. Almost immediately I hear noise to my left in the CRP. Then I see him, a good shooter buck, coming in quick. He stopps about 50 yds in the CRP lip curling and looking for the source of the commotion. I have had deer come in to this spot before but hang up without seeing deer, and I was afraid that he might do the same... so I give him a snort-wheeze. That did the track!! Ears layed down, coming in stiff legged.. he circled out to try getting down wind. He came out to the community licking branch that happens to be 35 yards in front of my stand!! I am at full draw, but I let him put on a show for a few seconds as he hit the branch, pawed the dirt and I released as he was pissin on his newly turned scrape...Perfect heart shot!! He was trippin up as soon as he took off, only heard hm run for like 4 or 5 seconds. He made it 50 yards after the shot. Live weight 250 pounds....waiting on my mount to get a better score, but my rough score put him in low 140's. Attached Thumbnails attachment.php?attachmentid=6532&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1290072888

I took a doe the first weekend of November. Four came out within 20 yards of my stand. I was waiting on the biggest one to get into a better postition when she spotted me and took off. The next closet was in a great postition so I moved on to her while she was trying to figure out why the other one took off. I had perfect shot placement. She went about 40 yards and dropped. I have a Fred Bear Element and used Crimson Talon broadheads. I did not see her drop because she was in the woods but the blood trail she left was very easy to follow.
