Hunt or be Hunted
So I use Lead 6 shot for squirrel. But I changed to Steel. And ever since then it seems that I miss a whole lot more. Is it because I use steel instead of lead? I know they use steel for birds..
92xj
Why would you go from lead to steel? The only reason waterfowl hunters use steel is because its a federal law. If hunters had the option to shoot either they would pick lead 99.99999 percent of the time.
Shaun_300
Lead shot hits a lot harder than lead, think the extra weight of lead makes it fly better too. Like Ben said the government made steel shot (or non-lead shot) mandatory for waterfowl hunting due to the fact of lead being in the waterways. I'd never use steel shot for anything other than waterfowl hunting, only because it's the law. When I duck hunt I use the Nitro Mag loads to get the best amount of hitting power, even at that I bet a regular lead shot load would hit harder. When I was buying some shells in the fall for my 28 gauge which I use for grouse, I saw that steel shot was available for both 28 gauge and 410. Had to laugh and bought the regular lead loads I always shoot at almost twice the price of the useless steel shot. Steel shot sucks in the 12 gauge, can't imagine what it'd be like in the smaller gauges.

Had my dad get it and he said all they had at the time was Steel (at walmart) Waiting for them to get more in. Don't worry I like Lead better. Just had to shoot Steel for a while.. Tominator
If those squirrels are beyond 30 yards, I'd say yeah, probably. Cheap steel loads are practically worthless IMHO.
