I didn't know that had a split tail feather...or am I just seeing things? They don't. He must have lost his middle quill. They use that as a 3rd leg to leverage as they climb and pound on the trees. Sure make a racket when you're deer hunting. Out of hundreds of acres of trees they have to pick one within 20 feet of you and rattle away. I shot him through a closed window. Couldn't really hear him.The cool thing about wood peckers is that they always seem to be happy. I have some wood duck pics if anyone is interested.
