Last day (for me) of Ruffed Grouse season and hunting in 2010

I got out of work, unexpectedly, around 10AM on this Blue-Bird day! Kiddos and Wifey had playdate plans, so I was in the woods by 11. Temps soared from the single digits this moring to 37°F by noon. Thats actually the warmest we've had in weeks. Hardly a cloud in the sky, and a 20"ish powder snowpack. (Didn't need the snowshoes). I found his tracks in only 20 or so minutes, and flushed him not 5 minutes after that. The WMA I frequent is unmanaged forest and very (VERY!) thick. I caught a glimpse and knew he was in a tree nearby, but after sitting for over 2 hours, he didn't show himself so I moved on. After another hour and a half or so, the sun was getting low and the mercury began to plummet as well. Due to the warm temps, and big hill I climbed, I had worked up a sweat and started to get cold so I called a year. By the time I got back home the temp had dropped to 17°F, 20 degrees in 4.5 hours! The only shots I got off were with my camera, but not a bad way to end the hunting year....with a last minute, unforseen afternoon in the wilderness on a beautiful day. C'est la vie!

Awesome pics! What ski hill is that, Stowe? Jay's Peak?

You can actually see 3 or 4 ski hills from this pond, I can never keep track of them. Jay and Stowe are much larger that this hill. This one, I believe, is Snow-Valley, a ski area that operated from 1938 until 1982. It was completely abandoned until about 5 years ago and bought by one guy to reopen as a private ski resort for friends and family! Can you imagine having that kind of money?! According to NELSAP.org (New England Lost Ski Area Project) he was suppose to build a house at the summit, and looking at the satellite pics from google earth, it appears he has.

The pond BTW, is at about 2000'. Paultry for some of you guys out West, but substaintail for the microclimates of the Northeast, and usually freezes earlier than most. Unfortunatly it isn't very deep, and holds a zillion small/medium pickerel.
