fly
I just noticed a small tear in a deer mount and was wondering if it could be fixed? It's in the neck crease where the head turns. It looks like it dried and shrunk causing the fibers to pull apart. Can post pictures if needed. Thanks
Ravin R10 man
Im sure it can be..take it to a reputable Taxidermist...prob not the one who did it the first time..it never should have happened It may have to have a new cape put on it? toddyboman
that doesn't sound good.......I would guess that you will need to replace the cape....but I could be wrong. How old is the mount?

A couple years old is all. Wouldn't put a new cape on it if that is the only way I'd just live with it. I don't want it to get worse though. TN Bucknasty
It's unbelievable what a good taxidermist can fix. As far as what needs to be done, it depends on the tear. I'd have to look at it to tell you how it would have to be fixed. I'd have to see how the hide was tanned and how long the hair was before I could tell you anything as far as fixing it correctly. I can tell you a way to fix it easily, but it's something that won't do myself because I don't want my name associated with this kind of thing. If you're interested, you can pm me, and I'll tell you about it. Edited January 5, 2011 by TN Bucknasty
RTF
A couple years old is all. How much did you pay for the mount ?
TN Bucknasty
How much did you pay for the mount ? Let me guess... If he didn't pay $350 or more, he got what he deserved. Is that what you're getting at?
fly
I paid 350 two years ago. The mount is below and the tear. I called the taxi today as I have one in his shop now. I'm bringing it to his shop next week. I'll keep you posted, but let me know what you think about the repair.
RTF
That's a nice looking mount. I really like the look. It looks to me that there was a scar there from fighting possibly and once the mount dried, it showed up as the skin stretched as you stated. Your taxidermist should be able to fix that. It will require gluing in and blending hair. No biggy for a qualified taxidermist.

For the love of Pete, get the terminology right . Got "what he paid for" . No one deserves a bad mount returned. From the looks of his mount he got a quality mount for an average price. Was kinda thinking the same thing. My last years deer had a pretty bad scar with a somewhat healed over injury. Taxidermist did not fix it, but honestly don't remember if I asked him to. fly
He's got the mount. Said the hide must have pulled away from the crease at that point and tore as it shrunk. He offered to re-cape, but i told him no. He's going to fill in the crease under the tear and then glue some hairs over the top. We'll see how it turns out. I'll post pictures.
