Re: HAS ANYONE EVER SHOT A COYOTE WITH A .22LR????

A .22 Magnum would be the minimum I would use on them. Unless you are calling them in very close and then, I would use a shotgun.

Your 22-250 will work just fine, but you have to hit the vitals. On small varmints you can hit just about anywhere, but the bigger the critter the more critical the bullet placement is.

Unless I'm mistaken, in Arkansas the 22lr is the only legal caliber to hunt yotes with unless it's deer or turkey season. I would think then it would be effective with a resonable shot. I don't think I would go out passed 100 yards by any means, and probibly would try to stay under 50.

Re: HAS ANYONE EVER SHOT A COYOTE WITH A .22LR????

i shot a chow once with the a 22LR. i was out at my land doing a little tree rat hunting when a pack of dogs started heading my way. There was a total of 8 dogs. I shot over them trying to scare them and all of them ran off but the chow--it started barking at me and growling. It was about 50 yards away. I shot at the ground in front of it trying to scare it away but instead it charged. It took 7 shots with the 22 before it fell. So I don't think a 22 would be a good choice.

Johnf You can hunt coyote with up to a .30 cal till bow season starts. Then you can only use equipment legal for the season that is open. Of course you can use a shotgun but with no larger shot that T shot untill modern gun opens in November. So blast away till October. You can check for yourself on the AG&F website. Hope this helps you.

I've seen coyotes take 2 shots from a .300 Mag. before they fell!!

You didn't actually see it...you heard it!!!!!!! tongue.gif In my defense...it was hit hard on the first shot...but was still trying to go, so a quick follow up shot didn't hurt. tongue.giftongue.gif At least I got one. grin.gif

I have shot a few. I never killed one but I have hit them before but they never die for me. It always seems that I can't get a second shot on them to finish the deal.

I have seen and heard horror stories of guys losing deer that were shot with a Nosler Ballistic Tip in a deer caliber (.270, 7mm-08).

[/ QUOTE ]

Not that were hit in the vitals. If the shot was too far forward or backwards, yep it can happen, but that can happen with any bullet. Its all about placement.

the bullet left no blood trail at all

[/ QUOTE ]

Ya know, I can't remember the last time I have seen a bullet leave a blood trail. Typically the deer does, so I will have to agree with you. tongue.gif

[ QUOTE ]

I dunno AJ, I always had the understanding that a Nosler Ballistic Tip was a varmint bullet and was not the best choice for big game.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nosler makes 2 different Ballistic Tip bullets. They have Ballistic Tip Hunting and Ballistic Tip Varmint. The Varmint bullets are designed to open violently. The Hunting bullets are designed for big game, well deer sized game. Most of the time when I hear of them opening violently and geting minimal penetration, they are being pushed at very high velocity in magnums. When tehy are used at moderate speeds (up to 3000 fps) they work great for deer. For those that want to push them faster, the Interbond was created. It has a thicker jacket and uses a bonded core for better weight retention and penetration.

I am not trying to change your mind on what you should use, just clearing up some misconceptions.

I had one walk up on me when I was hunting cottontails, he didn't see me at 50 yards and I put one between his eyes. Dropped quick.

That must be why they call you beanman...lol... I have never shot a coyote at all. Hope to some day.

... Nosler doen't specify which ballistic tip is which.

Look at the link I posted above. They do show which ones are big game (hunting) and which ones are varmint.

The site explains the differences between the two, but I can't find anywhere that says which type is loaded in which caliber.

How about the chart on the web page?

These are for varmints.

These are for big game.

There is a link to the charts at the bottom of the B-Tip page. It is kind of hard to see.
