magnatecsteve
Just wondering your guys opinions on the Russian steel cased ammo....Remington 55gr soft points are running about $18 per 20 at Wal-Mart, and I saw at Sportsmans Guide they have the Russian 55gr hollow pt much cheaper. Any downfalls to steel cased ammo if thats what I'll be shooting? I have heard they dirty the gun due to blowby since the case doesn't expand when fired. Thanks
hangunnr
The steel case expands just fine. The initial horror stories about the Ruskie steel cased ammo was the lacquer on the cases gumming up the chamber area causing mis feeds and poor extraction in the semi autos. Steve, If you want to try some of the Wolf steel cased 223 in your new rifle I've got a partial case of it and you're welcome to some of it. It dosen't shoot worth a crap outa my AR. Drop me a PM with your number, I'd like to talk with you about yote hunting. CR
magnatecsteve
Thanks for the offer, I got two boxes of FMJ and started sighting, shooting awesome groups at 75 yards. I need to get it to a god range where I can get it sighted for distance and see how it groups, not sure where Ill want to zero it at, depends on drop. I also located some of the same brand,(Wolf), at Blythes in Valpo that was hollow point. I got three boxes to see how they do...same 55 grain bullet just HP. Plenty cheap and the rep there said they are quite accurate, the only problem is the lacquer builds up in AR's, but with a bolt action they should be fine with regular cleaning. May be a stupid question, but is there anyone who re-loads steel casings?
wtnhunt
On the topic of cheaper ammo, have kinda wondered about the herters brand ammo cabelas is selling in several calibers. Read somewhere it is wolf ammo, but don't have a clue if it is or is not. Anyone have any insight there?
hangunnr
I've never heard of anyone reloading the steel cased stuff. I'd suggest trying some of the Blackhills blue or red box ammo. I've shot both and IMO it's pretty consistent. Last I knew there was a 300yd range at Winamac and for sure there is a 225yd range at JP. I haven't been to the range at Winamac in 20yrs so things may have changed. hangunnr
Adjam5
I have used the steel case ammo for years in my AK's and SKS's. Of course, those guns were built around the use of that ammo. I had an incident about 10 years ago with the steel case stuff. The extractor tore the shoulder off the case and the shell was stuck in the chamber. A broken shell extractor is recommended if you are going to shoot steel case. These are 7.62x39 cases. broken shell extractor on right. This was the old ammo with the lacquer on the cases. Only the last few years when ammo has gone through the roof, have I started using some of that wolf ammo, only for blasting and plinking in my AR's. For the serious shooting and hunting. As Handgunner said, consider the Black hills Blue box. I get great accuracy of of the Black hills blue box loads which are loaded with 50gr V Max bullets. The Lake City SS109 green tip is very high quality, but expensive. I clean after shooting ...always.
scottb
I tried some wolf ammo in my 30-06 one time. The first shot fired fine and had no problems with ejecting the case, the second and third rounds were a different story however. Had some issues getting the second one to eject, and the third one was a nightmare. The case expanded so far that i had to kick my bolt open with my boot, then stomp on the bolt handle to get it to eject the case. I see you guys are using them in an AR platform and i have never shot anything but made in the USA on mine, so i can't give any field advise there, but i will say this, i will never again shoot russian ammo out of any of my guns, other then my ak's and sks's. It just isn't worth screwing up one of my bolt guns to save 10.00 on ammo.

Shot some Wolf ammo thru my .308 and after a couple rounds one of the cases stuck really bad. I asked for advice on here on how to get it out, becuase it was stuck so bad. http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101356 I wont use the stuff anymore.
