What's Your "Thing"?

Deer hunting, turkey hunting, food plots and trail cams are pretty obvious from my posts I'm sure.

Besides that, baseball. My playing days are over, but I still enjoy watching my brothers and major league baseball- big braves fan. Also my love for the game has lead me to making some good money, as I umpire baseball tournaments nearly every weekend from march through september.

My real crutch in life is flyfishing. I'm passionate about western big game hunting, but given a choice, I'd flyfish all over the world.

Aside from the outdoor sports, I like to volunteer spare time in helping others & food drives for those less fortunate. Hit the weight room 5 days a week.

Other than the obvious of hunting and fishing, would be horses. About 8 years ago my wife and I got into the horse business. She rides and shows them at competitions, and I research them all over the country. We currently have 2 American Saddlebreds, and have had a total of 6 over the last 6-7 years. William Shatner has a Saddlebred farm in California, and I've met him a couple of times at the World Championship in Louisville, KY. Here is a picture of one of our 5 Gaited Saddlebreds, "Hollywood Material".

My life revolves around the church and all the church work. My phone rings constantly with people needing/wanting stuff. So if I had an "out" or something that I love to do, strange as it may seem, is lawn work. I have a small lawn business during the spring/summer months and enjoy making someone else's yard look nice.

My thing is Reloading and rifles. I love sitting at the reloading bench, learning from my dad, tweeking loads to get the most accuracy possible out of my rifle. If you look at my gun collection, you can tell that i love bolt action rifles. 95% of my firearms are rifles. I can sit at my computer for hours on end, researching the latest thing out, reading reviews, and learning about new cartridges. This in turn, also helps me be more helpful to my customers at work also.

1. Hunting:

I'm partial to hunting big whitetails, but love all big game hunting. Also enjoy small game. Hunting big game (especially with archery equipment) creates the adrenaline rush I have become addicted to.

2. Fly fishing for trout:

Something about mountain streams and solitude that makes my responsibilities seem easier to deal with.

3. Playing the bagpipes

The sound a bagpipe makes creates in me a feeling similar to the one I experience while fly fishing in the mountains.

Some very interesting 'things' here. Several of them made me stop and contemplate which single one I would most consider 'me', since I imagine we all have more than one topic that fascinates us enough to deserve a thought or two.

I raised Quarter horses for many years and was consumed by that, but it's been a good 15 years since I eased out of it, so not a qualifier. Wildlife photography has always been a passion, but I don't pursue it nearly as actively now as I once used to. So, outside of hunting and archery, I'd have to give the nod to mineral collecting. Just as meteorology has a couple folks here spellbound, geology does that to me and I worked for many years in that field.

Here's a few example pictures.

BTW MCH, my sons and I had a real baseball and hockey card collecting spell about 20 years ago - great fun. I still have a bunch of Cal Ripken rookies and a few various full sets.

lol - As I recollect, you were climbing around in an eagle's nest while I was excavating these. They're gypsum crystals, not uncommon but enough to divert me from antelope hunting, at least momentarily.:D

I've been collecting since I was 6(31 years), but have not done much in the last 6 or 7 years. Now that Chase is old enough to appreciate it, I'm trying to get him involved.

I don't have anything near as valuable as a Ripken rookie, but I've got a few of the more recent rookies and signatures. Lately, I only collect Bowman. They're still reasonably priced and their rookie cards hold value fairly well.
