stevebeilgard
i was told to use automatic transmission fluid, 1 qt per tank at a time, to clean the injectors of my duramax. will that work? i guess i've always just used injector cleaner, but if this is better i'll use it. any ideas? LETMGROW
No, I wouldn't! Especially if you still have warranty left. There are many injector cleaners out there designed to do this. Ruin an injector or an injection pump and you can kiss any savings good-by thousands of times over. Lynn
92xj
I would assume this was told to you by an 'old timer'. This practice took place heavily back before the modern diesels and ATF. 'Back then' (Which I am not sure of dates) it was done on a regular basis and did clean and lube the injectors as well as the pump. The ATF was 100% oil at that time and would burn at a higher temp than the fuel, this has all changed and it is NOT A GOOD IDEA to run ATF in the fuel of modern Diesels. LETMGROW
ATF stands for Automatic Transmission Fluid! Today there are more choices of ATF than cereal on a store shelf. With modern diesels having EXPENSIVE catalytic converter systems, turbos, EGR systems etc., I wouldn't put anything into the fuel tank which wasn't approved by the manufacturer. Keep the filters changed as recommended, use fuel from a pump and you shouldn't have any problems. Lynn
Shaun_300
Don't do it Steve! Just asking for a nightmare to become reality doing that. Those injectors are REALLY expensive, along with everything else it could screw up on the way to them, and out the rear too. Injector cleaner specifically made for modern diesels would be the only thing I'd put in the fuel tank.
stevebeilgard
whew. glad i asked. i've been using a pint of diesel injector fluid about every 6 tank fulls. i guess i'll just stick with that. thanks for the advice. mike
Hey Steve, I know the filters are expensive but I would change mine everytime the oil is changed. I know everyone will say its over kill but your talking to a guy that had to put $4000 in injectors last year! The guy at the GM dealer told me to change every oil change overkill or not, and he knows I change my own oil so it was to no benefit for him to tell me that. Small price to pay to save your injectors.
Shaun_300
Yep, changing the fuel filter regularly is very important. Good advice Mike. Replacing injectors is VERY expensive if you don't have warranty left. Just checked price for curiosity, $342.50 x 8 for injectors and just under 12 hours to replace them. VermontHunter
Parts = $2800.00 opprox. Labor = $1000.00 opprox. ( $90.00 Hourly Dealer Rate here) OUCH ,, That would definately sting for sure ..
