Congrats Don! You've been waiting a long time for this hunt. Great to hear it's been a good one for you!

I've got my information from several places. There's several great resources here and I've got a lot of useful information from Alex's, redbeards and other posters as well. The nwtf board also has a lot of call making info in the call makers forum. There are several ways of making them. Many use a lathe but some have figured out other ways of doing it. I'll be trying out a couple of the new calls in hunting situations starting tomorrow morning. Good Luck!

What a great hunt and bird! Congrats!

Well I've decided to put my new toy to work and turn some slate calls and strikers. Here's some of my early work. Later I'll get a picture of a glass over glass that I made for my dad's birthday with a picture of his gobbler from last spring. All are slate over glass. A couple Black Walnut and a Red Cedar. The strikers are Paduak, Purpleheart, Cherry and Hickory. I can't wait to share them with the local turkeys.

Re: Merriams turkey hunt suggestions? [ QUOTE ] Outfitters are fine. I was curious if anyone has had any success going the public route? [/ QUOTE ] We've had decent success hunting the Black Hills of SD. We're about 50 percent over all for our group which includes several turkey hunitng novices. Tons of beatiful but rugged public land with lots of Merriams.

Re: MN hunters, Lottery results are available now. Well the list of surplus tags will be coming out soon and go on sale mid march sometime. There also always the bow option for the last two seasons.
-
Check out the MN DNR site and you'll see the lottery results link where you can check on whether or not you've been drawn. I'll be hunting the first week in May in MN and the second week of may in MO. Then I'll be helping my dauhgter out the third week in May back in MN.

Re: Whose kid do you suppose this is??? [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] She's a cutie pie!!!!!! [/ QUOTE ] Before I take a beating from a couple members who shall remain nameless.............YES..........she does get that from momma. [/ QUOTE ] Naw Don I'll give you some credit. Re: Anyone planning out of state hunts? [ QUOTE ] I'll be in Mexico May 15th, Lord willing...............which he wasn't last year. [/ QUOTE ] Well I'll be praying that you're there and having the hunt or your life! You're due.

Re: Might be Turkey Hunting for the first time! [ QUOTE ] Well my Grandpa and Uncle hunt with a Shotgun and I want to go with them. Can a person with a bow hunt in the same party as someone with a shotgun? I also thought it said if I get drawn in the lottery for the spring turkey season I can't hunt with a bow or am I wrong? [/ QUOTE ] You can hunt with any legal arms including a bow during any of the identified seasons. The only time you're confined to a weapon is for the special archery liscense for the last two seasons. In other words if you get drawn or get a surplus tag you can hunt with a bow or legal shotgun. If you want you can hunt with a bow one day or a shotgun the next. Good Luck!

Re: Might be Turkey Hunting for the first time! What do yo need to know? Maybe I can help you out as I've been doing this for many years in Mn and have had many discussions with the DNR over regulations. It's actually got much clearer in the past two years. If you're looking for some help on what season or permit areas to apply for the MN DNR site has a report of the application success rates for different areas and permit times. Also since you're planning on using a bow for turkey hunting you can hunt he last time periods even if you don't get drawn in the lottery or get a surplus permit if your zone has 40 or more permits per season.

Re: Fall bird down Congrats! Gotta love it when it happens like that!

Re: Strutting.......Hen??? Last spring my daughter and I were hunting in the Black Hills of South Dakota and had a hen come to us in FULL strut for over 70 yards. It was so unlike typical hen behavior that it may have fooled less experienced hunters into thinking it was a tom. It continued this full strut demostration for over 10 minutes and within 10 yards at times. Definitely a hen though. One of the coolest things I've seen in the turkey woods.

Re: What do you buy? [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Even if they're pretty they gotta kill at least one bird to be a real "Turkey Call". [/ QUOTE ] Is that how that works??? I believe, then, I'm in trouble. I have a lot of "shelf queens" that have some catching up to do. [/ QUOTE ] I'm sure you'll put them through their paces. You have some fun trips planned for this spring.
