  1. I believe that the decision to hire a guide is relative to the nature of the hunt you're going on. If you're doing an OTC tag for whitetails in ******** (wherever), the need for a guide might not be so important. If after 15 years of applying for a Stone Sheep tag you finally draw......................you will probably want a guide. Anytime you are out of your element, one should consider a guide/outfitter or at least someone with a little local knowledge. Not only will it increase the chances of success, but, you'll be safer and alot less likely to get into violations of the tresspassing kind. You'll also spend alot less time trying to find animals, and alot more time hunting them. Hunt swapping is a great low cost method of accomplishing the same thing.........you scratch my back I'll scratch yours. Speaking of which................................. If anyone knows where I can find a quality Scimitar Oryx.............I know where there are some pretty good Mule deer and Elk.
  2. Have you ever noticed that even in the deep deep deep South the TV News team members don't have southern accents ???? They're trying to convey information to an audience and thick drawls are not condusive to conversation. If I flip on an outdoor show and the host sounds like he has a mouthfull of marbles.................his hat turned around backwards............his britches halfway down his crack.............and a truck that looks like it just came from a Monster Truck rally...............click...next show. This Hee-Haw Hip-Hop Gangsta Hunting isn't for me..............sorry.

  4. :'> We don't have much snow around here. 3-4 inches on the ground that's it. 10 miles South of us in the mountains they have 10-15 feet. It's kind of nice to have a quiet winter so-far. I'm sure we'll get our share in April.

  11. That looks like alot of fun. Great project. A buddy of mine and I have been tweeking a pair of 22-250's for almost two years now. They can always be better. One day we were dropping ravens at 500 yds like they were popcans at 50. Great glass makes all the difference. It's amazing how much better your deer rifle will shoot at 300 after spending some time shooting 50-75 grainers at 1000. Practice makes Deader.
  12. The origin of the phrase...."Cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey". In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys.' Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.' All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you.
  13. I agree 100% Don. My wife and daughter have the same 308 and it's a shooter. They're not the most experienced shooters, however, a 20 round group at 100 yards is seldom above 2". That's pretty good. And the guns are affordable. Love the Weatherby's..........................thanks Roy.
  14. Not too quick there CB............. Here's a ballistic calculator that will show you differently. http://www.biggameinfo.com/BalCalc.aspx We do alot of pd shooting at 6,000 ft. Move on up to 10,000-12,000ft. to shoot whistle pigs and there's a BIG difference. Not so much at 200 yards, but start stretching it out to 500-1000 and you'll soon find out it does make a difference.
  15. It enjoys 180 grain Nosler E-Tip and 110 grains of reloader 22. 3725 fps mv. And rings steel quite regularly at 1200 yards. yep........................it's fun.

  22. We shoot alot of whistle pigs at over 1000 yards. The whole long range thing is just a matter of calculations and equipment..............blah blah blah. My favorite shot ............... a Rufus Hummingbird at 32 yards, off a branch, with open sights and a .22 pos pelet gun.
