  1. Re: Learning the hard way The hard lessons you remember for a long time, what you learned will help you in the future years. If you know the bird is in the area sometimes it may take him a few hours to come in close. I'm glad you enjoyed your season.
  2. Re: Never seen this before If you find such a spot along the side of a field it is a good spot to set up, where I hunt in NY the turkeys have been using some of the same dusting areas for years. It is funny to watch a bird shake after it has dusted all you see is a big cloud around it.
  3. Re: Turkey or Deer, which is more exciting to hunt I love them both but turkey hunting is a lot more exciting to me, from hearing the first gobbles in the morning to waiting for the gobbler to come that last 10 yards to get into range, my heart just pounds.
  4. Re: Mount the first one or not? I think you will know the answer when you kill that first bird. I never did for myself but with my son's first duck and pheasant I had them mounted for him to relive the memories and now he is the mod for this forum.
  5. Re: Will they stay hot for very long? If you do get that rain for a few days in a row it will shut them down for sure. Hopefully Monday the weather will break and Tuesday will be bright and clear, that should get them going again.
  6. Re: How do you get them to come on in? I just want to add a note to realtreefan's advice, last year the birds were all hened up, we couldn't find a gobbler by himself anywhere. We called in and killed 3 nice longbeards by ticking off the hens and have them come in looking for a fight.
  7. Try to limit your shots to 35 yards or less, anything out past 40 yards is pushing it. In the early morning I would try and get close to the roosted birds, later I would set up along the field and put out a decoy or two and call every ten minutes or so. Keep your eyes open and try to keep still and you may be suprised by turkeys walking right past you.
