  1. Re: Read on stand? I read all the time on stand or ina blind, it passes the time more quickly. I don't think it's ever cost me a chance at a deer. Did I mention that the buck I shot on the 2nd of Oct this year didn't escape b/c I was reading. I simply set the book down, picked up the gun and shot him. I really don't buy the theory that reading makes you unaware of what's going on, it's not the reading, it's the person if they can be so easil distracted.
  2. Re: If you could hunt with a pro? If it was a realree guy, I'd pick david Blanton, he seems to get as pumped up as me. I'd also like to hunt Sask whitetails with my smokepole and Jim Shockey.
  3. Re: When... In 2002 I hit the Jackpot Feb 1st and 2nd, 20 sheds including a 185" set and a 95" single. Didn't find many after March 1st. Last year saw bucks carrying both sides every time I went out in Feb, hopefully it gets cold soon so the bones start popping, I'm getting antsy.
  4. Re: Best calibre for kids? I started with a 7x57, not sure what would be best, I've been wondering what would be best as I'd like to get my wife out with me more, she has her hunter safety.

    Just fired up.....

Re: Just fired up..... I'm fired up too.. The white fluffy stuff started to fall last Wed. and I said finally I can hunt in good conditions. Well I filled my tag Fri. morning and the temp dropped to -30 on Saturday, needless to say I was relived to be done as that'd make for a cold sit. It's warmer today and it can go ahead and dump another 3 feet of the fluffy stuff, that would make me happy.
  6. Re: What is this?.......pic...... It's a gland, not sure what kind but that's what it is. I used to be abutcher before I went back to school to be a teacher. I guess I'm a poor srudent as I don't remember what type it is, throw them out though!!
  7. Re: Big Bucks The last 3 bucks I've shot have been big mature bucks, all over 300#. Up here if you shoot a 200# deer you've likely shot an old doe.
  8. Re: What would you do? I wouldn't even hestitate. I also have deer right in my yard and my most active stand is 150 yards from my deck in the jackpines north of my house. It is in a funnel between the forest and a standing oat field and that's where I;ll be sitting tonight hoping a good buck follows one of the many does that have been sauntering by. Aren't we lucky to be able to hunt so close to home?

    Neck shots

Re: Neck shots The 2nd biggest buck I've shot dropped in his tracks with a neck shot at......15 yards. I don't like to take them but I will if I have to, I'd never take one over 75 yards however. Up here there is alot of brush and sometimes that's your only chance. The one I shot gave me only a view of his antlers and throat patch so I nailed him, right in the white. Like I said I don't prefer them but will take them.
