Get to know your local dealers. Most companies have some sort of national shooting, hunting staff that is left to the dealers discretion. Don't be pushy, that will just turn them away, but do business with them all the time, even if you get a better price with a huge retail or mail order store. The more you can befriend the owner of a local shop the better your chances. Oh yeah, it don't hurt to sell stuff for them. The store owner will be very busy at times and can't get out of the store to drum up business. So every time you can get someone to shop there be sure to have them drop your name and that you sent them there. Scratch their back and they can scratch yours.
I manage the archery dept. at a successful outdoor store. Ar first I started giving all the discounts and national shooter deals to the local pros. That went over like a lead balloon. Once I started giving the demo, free, or shooter staff deals to the average hunters is when I started seeing rewards for doing so. These guys will work for ya, and actually appreciate the things you do for them.
Several companies have programs, some are easier to get on with than others. Tru-Ball, Hoyt, BowTech, Easton, Beman, Tru Fire, etc., etc., all have programs. The main thing is be professional and give the dealer business. Companies have programs set up for a reason, to get people using their products that will stand by and promote them, and truthfully, most dealers don't appreciate or use the programs.
So, in a nutshell, if you want to get on staff, befriend your local dealers.
