TEAM #14: Strut Zone Snipers
western NY bowhunter replied to Strut10's topic in Announcements & Online Contests
Re: TURKEY TEAM #14 Man, I can't wait for May to get here! Been seeing lots of birds around. I'm hoping to let the air outta a couple of NY longbeards to add to the team tally... . -
Re: Any NY sheds found yet? I've heard of a few being found already here in the western Finger Lakes area. My uncle had nine bucks still packing both sides feeding out in the field across from his house Friday night...mostly yearlings and two year olds. I think that I'm gonna give it a while yet before I start looking.

Re: Lets see your turkey guns! Here she is...Rem. 870 Super mag with 26" barrel and a Kick's GT choke. I bought it last spring and have taken three turkeys with it so far. Also, dropped a coyote that came in to investigate my mouthcall on opening day of the fall season. Wasn't quick enough to get his buddy... . I'm thinking about sending it to tarjac's to get camo dipped before this season. Might try a Primos Jellyhead choke too.

Re: Would you? First of all, I gotta say that I don't own any realtree camo...all of my hunting clothes/gear is in mossy oak. My tribute is in the standard MO Obsession camo and it looks pretty sweet. However, my favorite Bowtech camo by far is the Hardwoods Gray HD pattern. It's alot lighter colored that the Mathews hardwoods. I can't wait for my allegiance to get here so I can get an up close and personal look at the Hardwoods HD pattern. So...I'd say yes...pay the extra $$$ and get the camo pattern that you want.

Going with the Bowtech Dealer and a spott hogg
western NY bowhunter replied to Hillbilly's topic in Bowhunting
Re: Going with the Bowtech Dealer and a spott hogg Good choice! I have a Bowtech Tribute with a Hogg It sight and I absolutely love it. Also, have an Allegiance on the way and that will have a spot hogg on it as well. I shoot CE Maxima 250's fletched with blazers and use a Scott Sabertooth release. I'd suggest replacing the stock fibers on the spot hogg with some fibers from fitz...makes the pins a whole lot brighter and its really simple to do. www.fitzfiber.com Good luck with your new bow. I'm sure you'll love it... ! -

Big ol' monster NY buck...
western NY bowhunter replied to western NY bowhunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Re: Big ol\' monster NY buck... Here's a couple more pics. of that monster Chemung County buck. I sure hope that the guy who killed it took some better quality field photos of him than these. I guess he scores in the 215-220" range. -
My uncle brought these pics. over last night. Don't know too much about this deer except that its a gun kill from Chemung County (Elmira area). Some of my dad's friends from work who live in Elmira have been talking about this deer so I'm pretty sure that its legit. I guess its supposed to be a 22-23 pt. in the 215 to 220" range. He certainly has an impressive typical frame. Bucks just don't get much nicer than this in this part of the world. Agghhh...if only more of our bucks could make it to maturity. Anyways, just thought I'd pass along the pics of this truely awesome buck for the rest of the NY hunters on here. Any of you NY'ers have any info. on this deer?

Re: Hey where are the NY deer? [ QUOTE ] I got a 6pt buck tonight about 2pm down at my buddies place, I was not gonna go out but I was down there visiting him and he said to me bring ur gun just in case we decide to go out, I was like ok. so we went out at about 1 and saw a couple of does and small bucks and then this bruiser came thru the trees and I fired a shot got him he ran right to my buddy and as my buddy was ready to fire he fell and that was it for him my buddy called me on the walkie talkie and said did u shoot a deer and I was yeah were is he, he said right at my feet now. I ran there to get my deer. My buddy lives in Prattsburg which is 9P by the way. I live in Henrietta which is 8H, so I know about the problem with no deer in 8H they moved south for the winter lol. [/ QUOTE ] Got any pics. of this bruiser 6-pt? I happen to live in Prattsburg, which is in WMU 8P (and 8R) not 9P. Things have slowed way down around here but there were a number of monsters taken around the house during the first week. I've never heard of so many 20"+ deer being taken in a single season. I managed to put a couple of fat does in the freezer. There's still some big deer in the area but the lack of hunting pressure due to all the posted property, combined with the warm weather has really had them holed up. Oh well, can't kill 'em all. Opening day of 2007 bow season is only 10 and a half months away... .

Re: Any Success in NY Today? I couldn't get the pics. to show up in the original post???

Re: Any Success in NY Today? The past couple of days have been pretty slow. I've seen deer every time out but nothing to really get a shot at. However, the deer are still around...lots of rubs, scrapes and fresh tracks. I believe that the main problem is the amount of posted property in the area where the deer are able to hold up and no one can get to them to get them up and moving during shooting hours. Honestly though, this is the best year for big bucks being taken around here since '02. My dad's friend killed this 23" 11-pt. above the house Monday evening. [image]http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b284/WNYBowhunter/philsbuck2.jpg[/image] [image]http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b284/WNYBowhunter/philsbuck2.jpg?t=1164254186[/image] [image]http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b284/WNYBowhunter/philsbuck-1.jpg[/image] Another group of guys got a monster 21" 11-pt. on a drive only a couple hundred yards from this one the day before. There was a 152" 10-pt. with a 24" spread killed on some local winery property that I hunt on opening day. My neighbors buddy killed a 164" 10-pt. in the next town over. I've heard of quite a few other big 8's and 10's being taken too. The monster that I saw on opening day is still at large...hopefully, someone in my family will get a crack at him.

Re: Any Success in NY Today? I'm pretty familiar with the Bath area as I only live 12 miiles or so north of there. A couple of my uncle's own 130 acres on the Hammonsport end of Mt. Washington. They're overrun with does and see some pretty nice bucks too. I spent most of my bowseason hunting winery property in Hammondsport which is WMU 8P on the western side of Keuka Lake....lots of bucks running around there this year. Unit 8R borders 8P to the north and is where I see most of the big boys...alot more farming going on up that way. I'll PM ya a few pics. of some local bucks that have been taken around the house over the past few seasons. Are you gonna make it back over this way before the end of season?

Re: Any Success in NY Today? QDMA, Just outta curiousity...any idea of the name of the town where they were hunting? Here's a couple of pics. of a 4.5 yr. old 12 pt. (141 gross) that my uncle killed with his bow on Nov. 10. He found the right side shed off of this deer from the previous year while hunting on Sat.! I sure wish more of our bucks around here could make it to this age class.

Re: Any Success in NY Today? Didn't get to pull the trigger this weekend...but still had my best opener in years here in 8P & 8R. Saw 6 bucks and a bunch of does yest...passed on a couple of small bucks and a couple of big does (no DMP's for this unit). We were in the back of the truck setting up a drive about 10:00 yest. and there was an absolute MONSTER standing out in the neighbors field tending a doe. Don't know how many points he had but he was a huge bodied deer with a really tall and wide rack...without a doubt the biggest buck that I've ever seen during open season. The funny thing is, they apparently were bedding in a small swampy patch of brush/goldenrod within 100 yds. of a cabin with 4-wheelers driving all around them! The image of him turning around and watching that huge white rack disappear into the goldenrod is still etched into my mind . Saw a couple more nice bucks but couldn't get a clean shot on either. Had a nice buck grunting and chasing does out in front of me during a drive this morning. The 4 does came within a few yards of me and spooked causing the buck to stop behind some brush where I couldn't shoot. I've heard of a few big bucks getting taken in the area, including a real nice 10-pt. up the road and a 24" monster on the winery property that I hunt. Still lots of bucks out there for the taking. I've got until Sat. off so I plan on doing some serious hunting this week.

Re: Monster NY Bow Kill !!! Got those other pics. yet???

Re: Yes yes yes!!!!!! Still raining here in Steuben County. I set a new stand last night in the rain...hopefully, it'll let up enough to try it out. There's two big scrapes out in front of the stand and I'm hoping that the dude making all the big rubs in the area will be by to freshen 'em up. Mr. Bowtech and Mr. Slicktrick will be waiting for him! If nothing else, maybe I'll be able to roost some turkeys for in the morning.

Re: Monster NY Bow Kill !!! This might be the buck that you're referring to. It was posted on Archerytalk.com the other day...says 24 pts., scored 4" under the current bow record (205") and was taken opening day in Ellicotville, NY, which is Cattauraugus County I believe? I don't know...I can't count close to 24 pts. in the photo and it sure doesn't look like it will score 200+". Regardless, he's a great NY buck and I would definately like to see come better pics. of it. www.archerytalk.com

It always amazes me how adept those big ole mature bucks are at keeping a low profile, even when they are living right under your nose. To me, thats what makes them the ultimate N.A. big game animal. I had seen this guy a couple of times back in the middle of June and then he totally went underground and I hadn't seen him since. I finally got lucky last night and managed to catch him off guard long enough to get some video of him. I believe that I saw this deer last year a few times in the same spot and possibly have some video of him from '04. If he is in fact the same deer, I'm pretty sure he's a 5 yr. old...which is pretty darn old for a buck in one of the hardest hunted areas in the northeast. I'm not sure though, he doesn't seem to have the mass typical of a fully mature deer.

Re: Any Birds ??????? [ QUOTE ] Our fall season starts this Sunday ( Oct 1st. ).... I'm so ready. [/ QUOTE ] You're lucky Joe...I've gotta wait until 10/21 here in Region 8. There's been 27 hens/poults out in my aunt's alfalfa field every day. I'm gonna leave them alone and try to concentrate on killing a gobbler since this is a one bird area. I can't wait. Good luck.
