Re: The Flu Shot?!?! I used to get one every year when I was in the Corps...now it's hit or miss. I do feel that crap after I get it but have been fortunate, even the years I haven't gotten the shot, not to have gotten the flu.

Re: Just a note.... I'm right there with you. And the fact that I'm about to change jobs and have been pretty much skating through the month of October worries me a bit. I'm actually going to have to start working again in a couple of weeks...UGH!!!

Re: Pulled Venison Barbeque [ QUOTE ] HarvDog, my wife has a homemade BBQ sauce that was served on pulled bear at the NY Roundup. AKA The Smackdown in the Adirondacks!!! I'll have her post it. Ask the guys who attended if it is worth making.... Gone in 3 seconds!!!!!!!!! [/ QUOTE ] I'd love to get the recipe for this sauce. And let me tell you guys...that BBQ was incredible. You've gotta try it.

Trying a new recipe... Slow cook a venison roast seasoned as desired with some potatoes and carrots in a crock pot for many hours until meat is tender. Pull meat off of bone if necessary and cut or pull into small pieces. Slow cook meat with 2 small chopped onions and Bull's Eye barbeque sauce in crock pot for a few hours. Serve it up on bread or a bun maybe even with some coleslaw. Mine is cooking right now. I'm looking forward to dinner tonight.

Re: My First Bow Kill (pic) [ QUOTE ] Congrats Buddy, I am glad to see so many firsts on here this year. Go get that big buck now! [/ QUOTE ] Speaking of "firsts", this was the first deer that I butchered myself. What a cool thing to learn! Now I'm watching for antlers.

Re: My First Bow Kill (pic) [ QUOTE ] Awesome Job Harv, it took me 5 years to get my first bowkill. The hardest deer you will ever kill with a bow is now down, the first is the toughest, after that you know you can do it because you have done it. Thats what I always tell my self when I get discouraged, I say Brad, what is the problem, it isnt like you havnt done this before, now get with it! Who is the picture of on your bow limb, I ask cause I also have a picture on my bow limb on my Hoyt, its of my ex gf that was killed in a car accident last year, and it has her name underneath. She was always around the bow from the start, she was there when I got it in the mail form Horst and all that, so I saw fit to have her picture there for hunting. I always kiss my bow limb after a good shot. Congrats on your deer, thats a fine trophy for any bowhunter, and lots of good meat too. I bet you are hooked now! [/ QUOTE ] The picture on my bow is of my wonderful wife of 15 years. I got the idea of the picture from a friend of mine who heard, what must have been, your story. Did you share the story somewhere...maybe on a tv show?

Here's the first deer I ever shot with a bow...a nice-size doe from 25 yards on Tuesday, October 5, 2004. Now I just need to figure out how to submit my entry for the deer hunting contest.

A Christian Hunter's Devotions and Studies
HarvDog replied to TreeWalker's topic in The Spiritual Camp
Re: A Christian Hunter\'s Devotions and Studies I lost my grandfather aka "Grand-Daddy" recently as well but as you said, it is comforting to know that he is with the Lord and not suffering any longer...EVER again. Praise the Lord!!! You and your family will be in my prayers. -
Re: Getting a little angry!!! I've got a neighbor like that...old retired guy and his wife that can't keep their noses out of my business. We don't really have "dog" issues but I always find him roaming around in the back (not actually "in" my yard) sort of inspecting my landscaping, deck, etc. I caught him back there the other day and came right up to him and asked, "Is everything okay?!?!" I don't think he knew what to think but responded, "I hope so" then put his little retired tail between his legs and went back inside." Hee hee hee. The bigger problem has been parking. Oh my goodness! I honestly believe that they think they own the public road. Here's the sitution, I have space in front of my house along the road but that's where my mailbox and a fire hydrant are located. The USPS has asked that I not park there so the postman can deliver the mail from the truck...ok whatever. And I know that I can't park in front of the hydrant. There is also some space on the other side of my driveway; about 8 feet width in front of my property. Well, normally I park all of my cars in the driveway anyway so it's a rare occasion when I need to park a vehicle on the street; maybe when we have people over or something. Anyway, it seems like everytime I park a vehicle on the PUBLIC street on the other side of my driveway, they have a problem with it. Well....one weekend my brother-in-law (NYPD) was visiting and returned at one point to find my father-in-law's little SUV parked in that space with a note on the windshield from the neighbor. OH BOY! My brother-in-law is very particular about vehicles and very protective of his family. He grabbed that note and went straight up and beat on their front door. The old man answered and looked terrified. My brother-in-law kindly explained that they didn't own the road and that if they touched any of our vehicles again, he would personally plaster stickers all over their vehicles. He stuck the note to their front door and matched off. Oh man...the guy was scared to death! I've tried to be nice about the whole situation since I have to live next to them but they messed with us on the wrong day that day. They haven't left anymore notes but did say something the ONE time a vehicle was parked there in like 3 months. UGH...it's so frustrating. I've considering borrowing my buddy's old beat up pickup he uses for snow plowing just to park it their for like a year...maybe even with one wheel up on the curb. Still trying to be neighborly... I use my web cam to keep an eye on them. :grin

A Christian Hunter's Devotions and Studies
HarvDog replied to TreeWalker's topic in The Spiritual Camp
Re: A Christian Hunter\'s Devotions and Studies I thought I would post a verse that has encouraged me during this difficult time at my place of employee (recent merger and elimination of many jobs with more to come). Jeremiah 32:27 - I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? -
Re: What do you do While on Stand I have considered reading a book, magazine, or the Word but have always been concerned about the page turning noise. I've brought my Palm Pilot out before to play a few games but couldn't concentrate very well...worried I would miss something. Now, I just sit, watch, pray, and occasionally two-way message my hunting buddy and/or my wife with my mobile phone. Sometimes I'll close my eyes for a few minutes but, again, I don't want to miss that monster bucks that is just beggin' for me to shoot him.

Just found this recipe and can't WAIT to try it... BBQ Venison Roast 2 cans (12oz) carbonated cola (your choice and I'm considered something like Cherry Coke and Ginger Ale) 2/3 cup worcestershire sauce 3-4 venison roast 1 med onion sliced 1/2 cup water 1/4 tsp pepper 1 cup bbq sauce Combine cola and worcestershire sauce in a large sealable plastic bag. Mix. Add roast to bag. Refrigerate for 4 hours turning occasionally. Discard marinade. Heat oven 325. Spray roasting pan with non-stick spray. Add roast. Add onion and water. Sprinkle roast with pepper evenly. Cover with foil and lid. Bake 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours basting 2 -3 times. Let stand for 10 minutes. Drain. Cut into slices. Return to pan. Pour bbq sauce over meat. Bake covered 20 - 30 minutes. Serve over mashed potatoes.

Re: Misfires Sounds like fun ! Now I can't wait to try it.

Re: Misfires [ QUOTE ] I always(Always) run a dry patches down the barrel until they come out with no oil residue on them then I fire 3 or 4 caps/primers. I then load a squib charge(30gr of powder with toilet paper wad over the powder) and fire the gun. After firing I run a couple dry patches and load my hunting load. I have never had this fail me in 20yrs of B/P hunting. I fire the gun off after each day of hunting, swab with a dry patch and ready to reload for the next morning. This may be going a little too far but I do not want to take the chance of missing the buck of a lifetime because I didn't do it. Good Luck!! [/ QUOTE ] Just so I know... What happens when you "shoot" the squib charge?

Re: Misfires [ QUOTE ] One of my muzzleloaders is a Traditions Buckskinner sidelock. I replaced the original #11 nipple with a musket cap nipple. There is no hesitation now at all. Haven't had a misfire since then either. [/ QUOTE ] I thought about doing the same thing with my Traditions Panther. Sounds like it would be a good idea. Thanks for all the other responses. I'll pass the word along to my buddy.

Re: Misfires Would you recommend NOT using the bore butter or just to run a dry patch (or two) through after applying?
-
Re: Misfires Agreed. Any thoughts on the first day? Possible sweating?
-
My buddy continues to have problems with his Traditions Deerhunting .50 sidelock ML misfiring. He loads with approximately 85 grains of 777, sabot bullets, and CCI No. 11 percussion caps. Opening day of ML (11/1), he attempted to shoot at the end of the day replacing the cap four times and NOTHING (except the cap). I was only 50 degrees in the morning, went up to near 80 mid-day, then back down to around 60 in the evening. I was not using tape or a condom over the barrel (which I did recommend). The next time was this past Saturday (11/8) in the afternoon while attempting to shoot a 6 pointer. It was around 45 degrees (I think). This is how he has "told" me he has cleaned his ML: - cleaning using hot soapy water and running patches through - rinsing using hot water and running patches through - letting air drying for a bit - running dry patches through until completely dry - running patches with TC bore butter through He didn't mention anything about cleaning the nipple and where the nipple screws into (what's that called?) but I am assuming he did. I did ask him if he tilted his rifle sidelock down when loading to let some powder go down to the nipple. I said he did but only after he loaded the bullet and packed it down. I would think the powder wouldn't move after that. So, here are my thoughts. I think the first day could have been moisture from the barrel sweating. He should have used a rubber! Sorry...couldn't resist. Anyway, the second day could have been the fact that he cleaned his rifle like an hour or two before we went out. There could have still been moisture in the barrel from the cleaning. I don't think he snapped off a couple of caps after he cleaned it or ran a dry patch down before loading. That's what I think but I'm definitely a rookie. Any thoughts/suggestions from the experts?

I haven't taken a "real" buck yet (only a button buck) but I will keep this in mind. The two deer I've taken with my muzzleloader were within 25 yards. They dropped right where I hit them.
