  2. Re: Best bullet weight/powder combo for Encore 50.Cal I shoot 120 grains of 777 loose behind the 250 grain barnes. 1" groups all day long, 2200 fps. It took alot of range time and many combinations of powders and bullets for this. 3 of my friends shoot the same load with equal results, a 4th does better with 100 grains of 777 and the 260 grain nosler partition or speer gold dot. Therefore results may vary, Each gun is different
  3. Re: probs with Encore in wet weather? I have never had a problem with mine. the breach is pretty well sealed and you are shooting aprimer system. Try to keep excessive water from running down the barrel and you should be fine. Alot more forgiving than the old flintlock in the rain
  4. Re: Thompson Center I think you would love it. I have been a T/C fan for years and have owned several. Currently have the Encore in 209x50 with .223 & .284 barrels and also a custom shop 14" barrel gold inlayed handgun in 35 Whelen. Alot of fun and they all shoot real well. Don't feel handicapped with only 1 shot as the first one counts the most and unless hunting lions and big bears that might eat you the single shot should bring on a greater challenge
  5. Re: encore question Sorry, meant this for the other T/C question
  6. Was in a gun shop on Saturday and they had a Winchester model 70 Super Grade with Leupold VariX-II on the rack chambered in 30-338. Douglas premium barrel. What a beauty. Asking was $900. Anyone know of availabliity of ammo or would this strictly be a handload adventure. Any thoughts on the gun and price?
  7. Re: Weatherby Vanguard depends on the Walmart. My local ones are selling them for $350 - $388 if magnum calibers. Decent guns but not a Mark V
  8. Re: encore question I have long been a fan of the T/C guns. I currently have the Encore in 209 x50 muzzleloader, .223 rifle barrel, .284 win barrel and a custom shop 14" handgun in 35 Whelen. I have 2 stock sets and just love the versatility. They all shoot as well as anyone would need them to for hunting -- 1-1.5" groups. I never feel handicapped with only 1 round. The first one is the one that counts anyway. I don't think I'd use it for Lions or big bears but everything else would be a go.
  9. Re: Thompson/Center Encore I have the encore in 50 cal muzzleloader stainless synthetic and also have a 223 barell and 16.5" 284 win barrel that makes a nice little woods carbine. I also have another custom shop handgun in 35 whelen. I love them all and they all shoot real well. A couple friends have the 50 cal mz and the 308 barrell and are extremely happy. The fact that you can change the barrels around make them ultimately versatile. With a single frame, a mz forend and rifle forend with rifle buttstock you can acqquire barrels to hunt anything in the world from varmints to grizzlies and african game with the new 375H&h barrel. Most of the barrels in standard and magnum calibers can be had for $200-$250. Versatility is the key and they all shoot good enough for most hunting situations.
