Re: New Childrens Movies out.... I think sometimes we tend to overreact to some of the children's movies. I don't think it will have much effect. The original Bambi movie came out in 1942, and I probably saw it around 1954, at the age of 7. By then, the movie itself had been out 12 years and had been shown to millions of people. It didn't affect me any because I grew up in a family that hunted. I also saw many western movies that showed Billy the Kid as the hero, the Younger Gang, and Jessie James, also billed as heroes or "good guys". It never affected me in a way that would be adverse to growing up with a normal personality, because my parents and grandparents were smart enough to teach me the difference between fact and fiction. I think we are making too much hooda about something that isn't important. I'll chill out, watch the movie with my grandkid, and enjoy it. If you are worried about stereotyping, I suggest you check back on the Beverly Hillbillies, Dukes of Hazzard, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres, to name only a few. Think of the stereotyping in the movies Rambo, The Deer Hunter, and Jacob's Ladder. If you took those movies to heart you would have the impression that every Vietnam Veteran came home "psycho". It is fantasy, for Pete's sake, and there are much more important things to worry about. I would recommend that everyone should read this book: This book is designed for the hunter as well as the non-hunters and animal lovers. This was written in a manner that gives the biblical outlook on hunting. SELF-INFLICTED HUNTING ARGUMENTS: Biblical Responses to a Loaded Issue by Dr. Tom C. Rakow ....popgun

Re: Very Disturbing Email! IRAN! Islam??? If it helps your concience... I googled "boy punished in Iran" and according to Snopes it was a sideshow put on to raise money from passers by. Sort of like a sidewalk magic show. It also said that it was labeled as Islamic Justice, but that the photos have floated around since 2004, sometimes giving credit to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, or Pakistan. I think you should be able to breath better now. ....popgun

Big Job for Small Equipment: Have you ever had a job that you thought was just too big for the equipment you own? I have this little 317 John Deer that I bought new in 1981. It stays in the Shop until I’m ready to use it. I’ve never let it sit outside in the weather. It has served me well. This firing lane was cut last year but sure looks thick. It’s a long ways down to the end of the lane. Here is where I’m thinking I need a bush hog. (That’s two years growth on that firing lane.) That sumac and blackberry briars cut through like butter, but the small sweet gum trees are kinda’ tough. This is an overhead view of the property. Most of the trails were cut when this photo was taken but had grown back over. It took a little over 6 hours, 5 chigger bites, numerous briar scratches, and about 6 gallons of gas, four bottles of water, two towels, and… “Boy howdy!!!”, my blades need a good working over now… I still wish I had a tractor and bush hog. More photos on photobucket (check all 3 pages in my Hunting Land Album): http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v605/Popgun/Hunting%20Land/?sc=1&addtype=local ….popgun

Re: FYI Muggs on \"who wins in a fight\" [ QUOTE ] Since they have wandered way off the path on your original post. Fred Rogers hands down! Not even close! You might want to research his WWII service record. [/ QUOTE ] There are a lot of urban legends floating around about Fred Rogers. Thankfully, he did not perpetuate any of them, but as a matter of fact....He had NO military record, because he never served in any branch of the military. He was however, a Presbyterian minister. ....popgun

Re: Apology! RyanH, I too accept your apology, but I would not be truthful if I did not add that I am also deeply disappointed. I spent the better part of an hour this evening composing a post to defend your actions in returning home to your family. Just as I was about to post, I noticed your “Apology” thread. Although I have never met you, I felt that I knew you, and I’m sorry that my impression was wrong. I don’t know how much of what you have related to us has been true over the past few days and how much was made up for whatever the reasons may have been. It isn’t any of my business. I’m sure that what you have told us has haunted you since the lie began, but you must realize that even in forgiveness it leaves me to suspect the validity and truth in the other post and replies you have made here on the forums. I think that, at least now you realize how much more important a man’s reputation really is, and how much it is worth. I hope you can pull yourself together and be an active and worthwhile contributor to the forums again, but that decision is entirely up to you. ….popgun

Re: Calling all lawnmower shadetree mechanics Be sure your Air Cleaner is clean.. I bought my little 317 Deere in 1981 and shot these photos last week. It has a 4’deck, and I never wash it off with water. I blow the grass off of it with a shop-vac. I change the oil once a year, and keep it garaged when not using it. I don’t baby this mower once I decide to use it, as you can see from the following photos. Before: After: Another firing lane Before: After: It’s still going strong. It has a Kohler engine. I love this thing. ….popgun

Re: Leroy.....Revisited We name ours too, after they are down. We start at the beginning of the alphabet like hurricanes and only name those that come off our normal hunting grounds. We have never gotten past George. I guess we should continue through the alphabet but we start anew each season. ....popgun

I don’t expect to win any popularity contest with this soliloquy, but I think what I have to say needs to be said. You won’t hear it on the news, and you certainly won’t hear anyone in politics speak of it. It is time to go onward. The terrorists that hit our Nation on September 11, 2001 started a war on terror, and they are winning. They are winning because their original plan was to hurt as many Americans, (or infidels in their viewpoint), as possible in one homeland attack on American soil. They did, and America wept. They are winning because their original plan was to disrupt the American way of life, and cause as much economical, sociological, and psychological, damage to the American public as they thought was possible in one horrific day. They did, and Americans trembled. They are winning because their purpose was to further divide the voices of America. Their purpose was fulfilled and Americans argue. They are winning because their purpose was to divide our military forces into many action locations, and attempt to sway the Americans at home to protest our government placing our loved ones in harms way. Their purpose was fulfilled and Americans are confused. They are winning because they have nothing to loose. Americans worry. How can we turn this around? Every year on December 7th a memorial is held at Pearl Harbor to honor those soldiers and sailors who gave their lives on one horrific day. Every year, we Americans meet at Arlington National Cemetery, and other military cemeteries around this nation to show honor to our fallen military. Every year, we Americans pay tribute to our veterans and active military. I certainly do not think we should stop these practices. These are the days that our nation can show the unity that holds us together. But the tributes held in New York and around the nation every year on September 11th are feeding the terrorists exactly what they need to keep going strong. Remember that this is not a conventional war. When we stop televising regular programming and replace it with hours of live coverage of the 9/11 tributes, we are feeding the enemy. When our media focuses on the poor families that are still in sorrow for their lost loved ones, we are feeding the enemy. Our enemy, in this war on terrorism, feeds on our sorrow, grief, agony, and tears. This is not a conventional war. This war is not over boundaries, State’s rights or freedom of the oppressed. This war is not over defending our allies, honor, or oil. This war is over hate. The terrorists hate us. They hate what we stand for. They hate what we have accomplished. They hate us for being who we are. We will not win this war with negotiations. We will win this war by killing the terrorists. We will win this war by going onward. We need to celebrate the lives of each and every person who perished on that horrific day in 2001, and try to stop mourning the loss on national television. The families of those who did not survive 9/11 need to mourn in private, and start living their lives again. They need to take that 4-6 million dollars that was given to each family and live the lives that the enemy hates. The rest of us need to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and get back to work. There were a lot more losses in WWI or WWII than we have suffered during this war on terror. Our fathers and grandfathers lost more of their fathers, brothers, friends, and kinfolks than most of us can even imagine. We are today what we are today, because our forefathers did not languish in their losses, but realized that their losses made them stronger and more resolved than ever before. It has been 5 years, and it is time we all go onward. ….popgun

Re: That hurt! turkeygirl: I saw something at a military surplus store just last week that you need. It is a fully padded suit that they used for training the military attack dogs. The suit was complete with the gloves as well as a neck protector and booties for the lower ankles. All you would need to complete the outfit would be a very good helmet with face protection. This one was in a size XXL. The suit has a few tears that have been professionally repaired with Duck Tape. Although it has a quite potent and unquestionable doggie odor, I think you could eventually get the smell to blend with a few liberal doses of Doe-P, road-kill, and a floral perfume of your choice. This suit is a real bargain at $350. (used), because I’m sure the government paid thousands for it new. Let me know if you want me to pick it up for you the next time I am down that way. It weighs approximately 60 lb. but UPS will deliver. I know it sounds expensive, but it is probably still cheaper than your health insurance. Glad to hear you weren’t hurt too bad…. this time. ….popgun

Re: Hey Navy Vets RangerClay; You have something there of Museum quality. Do not sell on Ebay. You could have this appraised, donate it to a military museum and get a tax deduction so large you may never have to pay taxes again. The USS Razorback, in North Little Rock, AR would love to have them. pm me for links if you are interested in more information about what you have. The underside of the shelf should have a label such as this: The top looks like this: A little about what you have: MFG. BY COMET METAL PRODUCTS, CO., INC. RICHMOND HILL, N. Y. and the name of the ship. The name of the ship also appears molded on the side of each model. Amagiri class, Aoba class, Asashio class, Atago, Chokai and Haya, Fuso class, Hatsuharu class, Hibiki class, Ise, Kongo, Mogami, Mutsuki class, Nachi class, Nagato class, Natori class, Sendai class, Shokaku class, Tone class, Wakatake class, Yubari. In this arbitrary compartment location order (matching the photos), they are: 1. Asashio class 6. Nagato 11. Amagiri class 16. Mogami 2. Mutsuki class 7. Fuso class 12. Yubari 17. Atago 3. Hatsuharu class 8. Kongo 13. Sendai class 18. Tone class 4. Wakatake class 9. Ise 14. Natori 19. Nachi class 5. Hibiki class 10. Shokaku class 15. Aoba class 20. Chokai and Haya The Fuso, Ise, Kongo, and Nagato are battleships, the Shokaku is an aircraft carrier (obviously), the Aoba, Atago, Chokai/Haya, Mogami, Nachi, and Tone are heavy cruisers, the Natori, Sendai, and Yubari are light cruisers, and the Amagiri, Asashio, Hatsuharu, Hibiki, Mutsuki, and Wakatake are destroyers. Congratulations...You have found a real gem of a treasure. Do not sell cheap, and take your time to decide what to do with it. There are a lot of collectors out there. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to be one of them. ....popgun

Re: Home schooling? I’ll answer your question, but I want to make this perfectly clear first. This is just my own personal opinion, and I know I will probably offend at least someone, but I would never, ever do it. School is a lot more than just learning the published curriculum. Someday that student will be forced to live and work in the real world, with real people, who are different than themselves and their own families. This interaction with those who are different, on a daily basis, helps form their own life’s image, and what they want to be as individuals. I don’t think anyone should be home schooling their children unless the parent doing the teaching is a qualified and certified teacher. Having a college degree does not mean the college graduate is a qualified teacher. The person teaching should also be certified in “every subject” they are attempting to teach. Have you ever questioned why the same teacher in the public school system does not teach every subject? Someone with a degree in Home Economics has no business teaching Physics, English, Geometry, or History, unless they have training in teaching, and are qualified and competent in those fields of study. As I stated earlier; “This is just my personal opinion”, but I say No, No, No to home schooling. I’m sure you will get a lot of differing opinions, but believe me; Home school your children and you may end up with an 18 year old senior that does not know the difference between the words “two, to, or too, or even the words hear or here, sale or sell, or your and you're, and can’t reconcile his checkbook each month when his statement is delivered”. ….popgun

I’ll bet most of you guys recognize this dude. Yep….That’s Billy Lane, the Motorcycle Designer and Builder. Driving while intoxicated in Florida on Labor Day, he attempted to pass several vehicles with a double yellow line. He was driving his customized pickup truck and slammed head on into a small motorcycle driven by a 52 year old man, with a helmet and riding a street legal machine. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Billy Lane went on to smash into a stationary object after the impact with the motorcycle. Blood alcohol test have not been finished yet but the officers at the scene said that alcohol was a factor. This is not the first time Lane has had bouts with the law and alcohol. He was arrested in North Carolina not long ago. He may be a genius on a motorcycle building level but a real fool when it comes to good judgment. Personally, I hope this “idol” of many teens and motorcycle enthusiasts will go down in flames. Billy Lane’s truck being loaded on a wrecker. What a shame… ….popgun
