  1. Re: Do you wear orange? I wear it because it is the law and I think it is a good idea. That being said: One thing I noticed missing from this thread is that for red/green colorblind people (one in ten white males) orange isn't a very good color. I should know, I'm r/g colorblind and a better color for me to see would be canary yellow. It really stands out for me where as I really have to search for hunter orange.
  2. Re: Peein in treestand A week ago there was a thread about this on another forum I follow. Most said let'r rip. Last Friday, I climbed into a tree stand at 9:30 am and at 1 pm I let it fly. It hit a leaning tree downwind of my stand about 8 foot off the ground. I was set up on edge of a timber/crp grass. The wind blew from the timber out across the crp. I figured any deer moving would be sneaking down the trail inside the timber that parralled the grass. At 2 pm, I hear something behind me and turn to see antlers. The small buck came from directly down wind, circled the base of my tree and nosed the tree I had wetted down. I had many chances to arrow him, but he was a 1.5 year old 4X2 (freak rack). Now a bigger buck might not have reacted the same to the scent, but then again I don't feel a mature buck would have been cruising around in open grass at 2 pm (at least not until the rut really gets going).
  3. Re: Brother wants to buy muzzleloader, which one? [ QUOTE ] if i had the money, i would like to have the savage. I'm wondering if they will ban it [/ QUOTE ] How can they ban a gun that could be loaded with BP, Pyrodex, or 777? Makes no sense at all. Just load it to the local legal requirements.
  4. Re: Bullet Trajectory Try to guess the necessary values needed to be input into the following URL: http://www.sav10ml.com/pages/load_data/traj_basic_dat.html If you have chrono data and ballastic coefficient of the bullet, you should be able to achieve some sort of reference point.

  6. Re: Do you butcher your own deer? Butchered all our own until we had kids and didn't figure we needed a bloody kitchen. For a couple of years, took deer to the local locker. The quality of the end product got so bad it was either quit hunting or start butchering again. Any guesses on which way I went? The local locker does "deer stew". You get your poundage back, not necessarily your deer. I talked to a person we let hunt one of our farms, asked him how they did. They said they shot a decent buck, but his antlers pulled off as they tried to pull him up the hill to the truck (December in Iowa). He also commented that the bucks hooves were "slipping". I asked what they did with the buck and was told they TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL LOCKER! EEEEWWWW! Lockers are in it for speed. They get paid by the deer. I would encourage everyone to completely bone out their deer, removing every scrap of fat and sinew/muscle sheathing they can, then compare this to what a locker has done. Hopefully, you will be a convert. If your having sausage made, take your old boots in when you drop off your deer. I have a friend who has stated that 'coon and muskrat make good sausage (and I'm sure they do!). As far as mixing suet with venison when ground, why would you take a healthy, naturally lean meat (if you've trimmed it right) and add fat? Not for me, but you can decide.
  7. Re: Extra Load Carriers [ QUOTE ] I seriously doubt if anyone (or very, very few) get 2nd shots with their muzzleloaders so speed is not much of an issue. [/ QUOTE ] I had two chances at doubles this year during early muzzleloading season. I was walking down a waterway between two standing corn fields when two deer came running around the corner, straight up the waterway at me. When I threw up the gun, they froze. At the shot, the doe buckles. I knelt down in the tall grass reloading while the other deer (fawn?) stood there. I got reloaded and even scoped the other deer out. Deciding not to shoot it, I stood up and started walking towards the downed deer. As I got to it, something made me turn around and look back up the waterway that I just walked down. A doe and twins had come out of the corn and were standing there looking at me. Down goes the doe! Last day of season, I watched two deer enter the trees around a silted in pond. Figuring they were going to bed and not offer a shot, I decided to walk over there. One of them took off across the open field and stopped broadside. I shot it, reloaded and as I walked towards it, the other deer it was with took off runing and stopped broadside at 60 yards. I was out of tags I carry four reloads (powder, bullets/sabots, 209 primers) in a ziplock baggie. Figure this should help if I get caught in the rain.
  8. Re: Extra Load Carriers I posted a source of bulk vials to a similar thread on another bulletin board. I have no financial interest in either of the vendors I posted. I like to weigh out 20-30 charges at once, so I like to have many vials. Currently, I have two different powders with about six different weights ready to hit the range (about 60 charges). Also, I want an airtight container. When one looks at what you have invested in the gun, scope, powder, etc., I think these vials are affordable. Especially since they are reuseable, JMOT.
