Just got hired on at the Oklahoma City Department last week. I was lucky enough to get the first job I applied for after I finished my Municipal Fire Safety degree at OSU. So far it has been everything I had hoped for even though im only in recruit academy right now.

Thanks Todd... I figured you would have some positive input for me! Colin

Hey guys I just had a couple questions about what type of herbicides i should use in my food plots... I think I will need two different types but I'm not sure. First off, right now I am looking for something basic to use while I am working the ground. I mowed a while back and almost everything was burnt up so I disked it all under a couple days ago and put down 300lbs of lime and disked it in. I want to go back in a week and spray and kill anything that is coming up in the area now. Then in two more weeks I plan on re discing and adding another 300lbs of lime. Second, I am going to plant wheat and oats either the last week of august or first week of september whenever I know we are going to get some rain. Is there a certain kind of herbicide I can use that wont hurt the wheat or oats. Also the area is between a 1/4 and 1/2 acre so how much would I need. Thanks in advance for anybodies help!

Dang Brad.... Always layin down the big boys. Congrats! -
The same investment company that just bought Remington a few months back also owns Bushmaster. So my guess is that they are building the gun for them. Looks just like a Bushmaster Predator but the price tag is quite a bit better. Bushmaster also has a Max-1 Predator model that is now available.

No I havent had him scored yet he is at the taxidermist already so I wont see him again till probably february. Im gonna think your guess is pretty close though since I measured him at 12 6/8 and 12 3/8 if I did it correctly... which I think I did. I appreciate your guess on him cause people around here in okie land keep askin me and I really had no idea what to tell them.

Thanks Steve. That was mine and Jay's first trip out west with the rest of those guys. Needless to say we are already planning next years hunt. I know you do alot of antelope hunts. What do you think he scores?

Well so far this year has been pretty good to everybody. As of today we sit with one unfilled elk tag with a little time to still hunt over thanksgiving break. We started off the year August 16th the day after opening day for archery antelope. My room mate Shane and I made the trip up to his family ranch looking for a couple pope and young goats. The hunt ended up pretty uneventful thanks to rain that didnt help the water hole situation and alot of unsuccesful stalks. So we left empty handed. The first week of September on the other hand brought some good fortune. Shane and good buddy Ryan T. flew back up and stayed for 9 days and got some work done. Ryan started it off the second evening by shooting this nice full velvet 5X5 pope and young whitetail that grosses 137 and some change. A couple days later Shane followed up by arrowing a nice 4X4 muley with browtines. He should also make pope and young. So needless to say September was pretty good for those boys. Now October has come around and it is time for rifle seasons. My other room mate Jon was the first to draw blood on this 9 day trip. He arrowed a beautiful wide 5X5 pope and young whitetail from the same stand Ryan had shot his from just a month before. We havent gotten a score on this one but we are guessing him to net in the mid 130's. Ryan S. also killed a nice 160 class muley this evening but I do not have any pictures of it right at this moment I will have to add them at a later date. So two days later after Jon and Ryan shot their deer we had a run in with a 190"+ typical and a 180" with a 10" drop tine first thing in the morning. We spent all morning trying to get on those two deer. Jon, Ryan and I were on the spotting scopes giving signals to Shane and Jay on the mountain. Those two deer ended up getting over the ridge on us where we couldnt see them anymore. We tried to move into better position and relocate them but we were stuck because of some elk moving up the draw. By the time we got over to the other side of the draw to relocate Shane and Jay were slowly stalking along on the other side of the ridge. Just as I got my spotting scope set up I saw the two deer spook back over the ridge and high tail it all the way up to the peak of the mountain. So after licking our wounds we headed back to the cabin for a little lunch. On the way out we were glassing some flats looking for some antelope so I could hopefully fill my tag. We spotted a nice buck in the spotting scopes over a mile away and decided to take a closer look. After a little driving, stalking, and about a hundred yards of belly crawling we were in position behind two bushes looking at the buck laying down exactly 350 yards away. His does that were with him finally started to move off so he got up to follow and took a few steps to the right. I sent the first shot on the way and clipped the bush on the right just slightly and hit him in the gut. I quickly moved to the left just a bit, racked in the second shell, and squeezed off the second round. This time I scored a perfect shoulder shot and dropped him in his tracks. I am so pleased with my first antelope and can't wait to get him back from the taxidermist. Since I shot the antelope we had a little work to do. We got him dressed, caped, skinned the rest of the way, and in the cooler by 2:30. Just in time to get a quick bite to eat and head back over to the mountain and try to find the two giants again. We werent able to get back on them that evening, but they were spotted about a half mile away right at dark that evening so they never went far. We did get on a really nice wide 4X4 that Jay elected to take. So after a short stalk and a very nice shot, we had one more really nice animal in the bag. Shane spent pretty much his whole time guiding us guys and only got to elk hunt for two days. He wasnt able to fill his tag but will be going back over thanksgiving break to try and finish up. If so this is gonna be a hard year to beat. Thanks everybody for looking at my really really long post! Colin

Mrs. Chapman frequents the store that I work at very often and I have spoken to her about this before. I told her how Jason was trying for a while to get the ball rolling on this thing but wasnt given any help by the members of the bowhunting council that he talked to. She gave me her email and told me that if we could get together some information and maybe a petition and a statement as to why we want the law changed... she would be more than happy to make sure that it is reviewed by the council. So she would be a very good person to voice your opinions too and why. Colin

They always seem to be somewhere you can't hunt them. This buck lives smack dab in the middle of Oklahoma City, Ok. I can see him pretty much daily if i want to.
-
Good lookin bucks Brad! I lost my phone with your and Micah's numbers in it. If you would, can you send me a pm with both of them. Also my room mate and I are gonna try to meet up with you sometime so he can talk to you about the possible hunt swap. Colin

Well guys Josh and I had a great time last year and we would both love to be there this year but its just not gonna happen. Josh has since moved to Michigan so that his wife can continue to further her career in the medical field so he has a pretty good excuse for not making it. I on the other hand would really like to be there but we are just low on employee's in the hunting department at the store and its just not possible for me to slip away on a saturday at the moment. I hope you guys have a great time and im sorry i dont get to meet up with you guys again this year. Shoot strong everybody. Colin P.S. Jason I just recently stumbled across some recent developments in the broadhead length change, so I will be pm'ing you sometime this week to discuss some things with you. -
Joe one school that you may want to look at even though it is nearly across the world from you is western state university of colorado. Its located in gunnison colorado which is 30 minutes a way from crested butte and nestled up right next to the gunnison national forest. I looked into it pretty hard because I wanted to either go into wildlife biology or firefighting for my career but ended up staying here in oklahoma and chose firefighting. The school has an excellent wildlife biology program and has alot of fun classes. I dont know about other schools but at western state you will get to take multiple two week long backpack trips into all the different eco systems of the western united states that you will be studying. I dont know how their wildlife department fairs as far as ranking, but I think it is in a great area for someone like yourself who likes to hunt and fish alot and still be able to do those things why your are at school. One of the counslers that came to my highschool here in oklahoma to visit me even told me that they have a program set up with the local police department where you are able to bring your guns and store them in the police department's vault and can go retrieve them whenever you want to use them. Hopefully some other people will be able to tell you about some other schools, thats just the one I really looked into when I was considering heading in that direction. Colin

Re: Not Happy With New Turkey Pants I bought those same pants and shirt in the new apg and they both shrunk and faded a considerable ammount on my first washing. I took them back and got a store credit on them but ended up buying some new gamehide stuff in apg elsewhere.

Re: Your next rifle? Im in the process of transforming a 700 vsf in 308 to a 22-243 at the moment. That will be a fun one. After that I have two options. I am either gonna go with the model 7 xcr in 270 wsm, or build a 338-06 out of an old 30-06 adl I have.

Re: Okies, I need some input on Lake Tenkiller. largmouth, smallmouth, sandies, walleyes, channels, flatheads, blue's, carp and really big carp, crappies black and white, and more perch/bluegills than you can shake a stick at. Plus trout and striper below the ****. I basically spent my entire summers growing up there at my grandparents place. It is a beautiful lake and like jeramie said there are alot of really nice camp grounds with lots of rules so you dont have to worry about too many rowdy people. It is deffinantly a really nice place to take family. Pine Cove, Pettit Bay, Strayhorn Landing, are just a few of the nice places on the south end of the lake. Petit Bay is about halfway up the lake. I think the entire lake is like 17 miles long or something like that with plenty of different branches and coves with nice camping places.

Re: First Hog of the year! East of Guthrie right on the Lincoln/Logan county line. Decent cutters...
-
Well it took a little while longer than i would have liked, but I put the first piece of bacon on the ground this evening. About 150lbs... Not the biggest but he sure was good looking and he had some pretty decent cutters on him too. Colin

Re: 5lb Crappie is TRUE!!!!!!!!!!! Well I talked to the cleveland county game warden today and he hasn't heard anything about this fish. My buddy who told me about it and I talked to him at the same time. My buddy is a little upset and wants to know what exactly is goin on...
-
Re: 5lb Crappie is TRUE!!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't have ever believed it if the person who told me wasn't one of my good friends. 5lb 3oz is HUGE!
-
Re: Crappie The fishing manager up at my store(sportsman's) knows the guys who caught it and the guy that tied the jig it was caught on. They both called him within about 5 minutes to tell him about it. As far as where it was caught on the lake all he said was slip number 2. Im not familiar with thunderbird at all so i dont know if that was a fishing dock or just a regular marina dock. You will probably see it in the paper this weekend i would assume. Colin
-
Re: Crappie Word on the street is that a potential new world record crappie was caught here in Oklahoma about two days ago. From what i hear it weighed in at 5lbs3oz which shatters the current state record here and is going to be pending as the new world record. It was caught at lake thunderbird here in central OK.

Re: AR 15 Adjam5 - It is a 14.5" barrel but it has a different flash hider than a standard ar. Instead of being about and inch long and removable, it is 1.5" and fixed which brings the barrel up to the 16" min. As far as the gun goes that is probably a little high. The gun should sell for no more that $870 new, the mags are no more than 30 bucks each, which it comes with one when its new, and the bsa red dot shouldnt be too terribly expensive. If it were me i would offer him $850 and see where it goes from there.

Re: Loads for 257 Did you have any kind of pressure signs yet on those loads? If not i would bump up a lil more cause mine was similar and the more powder i gave it the better it got. Also you may want to load up some of the 68.7 and 69.2 and then play with the seating depth a lil bit.
-
Re: Loads for 257 Ic Ic. Well im glad i didnt ever try that then cause it probably would just be a waste of time. My loads are loaded out really long, you can actually see all three of the groves on the tsx. The case mouth is right on the bottom edge of the lowest ring. In fact they are so long i can only put two in my magazine and still get them to feed right, and i have to slide them in bullet end first and then push the case back into the magazine.
