This trend has many consequences for the maintenance of this traditional, outdoor activity that is an important element in Alberta's heritage. As a concerned group of hunters, conservation groups and agencies, this organization is focused on reversing this downturn by demonstrating the value of hunting to sustainable wildlife management, our environment, our culture, and the individual Albertan. Program Objectives: The vision for HFTF is “An Alberta where hunting continues to be a respected, traditional outdoor activity that remains a substantial and integral part of Alberta’s heritage, culture and environment.” The mission is “To foster and increase public understanding, involvement and support of hunting. To ensure opportunities for every Albertan to hunt within a management system that conserves the wildlife resource.” The goals of the HFTF are: 1. To increase the number of people participating in hunting and its associated activities within the limits of sustainable wildlife conservation. 2. To maintain and enhance hunting opportunities and experiences in the province such that hunters are encouraged to stay in the activity and new participants are attracted to it. 3. To increase public acceptance of hunting as a traditional outdoor activity that improves awareness of our natural environment, and is an important wildlife management tool. In order to effectively meet these goals, HFTF has created a number of Working Groups including: (a) Communications, (b) Hunter Participation and Opportunities, © Hunter Heritage, (d) Fund Raising. Items of Interest – about Alberta hunting license sales… · During the 2004 Alberta hunting season, there were nearly 100,000 hunters of which; 87,000 are resident hunters, 2,890 are non-resident Canadians, 9,700 are non-resident aliens. · From the period 1990 to the end of the 2004 license year, we had over 389,810 different licensed hunters. · · 2004 hunting activity increased by more than 2800 hunters! Of the 2,800 new licenses, they represent an increase of: o 2127 resident hunters o 213 – non-resident Canadians o 425 – non resident aliens o · 13% were new hunters (someone that hadn’t purchased a Wildlife certificate since 1993 or not at all). · There were sales of over 557,000 different activities! We have not seen this kind of activity since 1985 through 1987. In comparison, this number was 534,000 in 2003 and 540,000 in 2002. · Total Draw applicants for 2004 increased to 208,000 compared to 196,000 in 2003. Items of Interest – about the contributions of hunters: · Alberta hunters contribute more to wildlife conservation than all other conservation groups combined. · Over $10 million per year is contributed through license levies and application to wildlife conservation and general revenue. · The average Alberta hunter spends about $750/year on hunting and related activities. Much of this money stimulates rural economies. · Hunters contributed over $40 million during a 15 year period from license sales to manage wildlife populations and their habitat. · Alberta hunters contribute thousands of volunteer man-hours to wildlife conservation annually. · Hunting is an important element in sustainable wildlife management in the province.
