[/ QUOTE ] I am only about 45 min north of you. I am near Oakland.
  4. I was wondering when the best time to hunt Oryx at White Sands is? I was hoping to draw march because it is still cool out and there is not much other hunting going on.
  5. Re: what kinda of deer do you hunt I hunt both whitetail and muleys annualy and I am usually lucky enough in the draw to pull an elk tag every other year.
  6. Re: THE GREAT COLORADO ELK HUNT [ QUOTE ] well, so far i feel 6 for archery, and 6 for rifle, and a few who never gave any preference. we'll let this go on for another month or so, and see what happens. i'm actually surprised that so few have responded. this will be a hunt to remember. what a whimp, rileman. cowering down to firefighters boast of pulling you out. i'll put my duramax against your powerstroke any day..... lol [/ QUOTE ] Neither of us needed a tow in Nebraska did we? As a matter of fact The day before you arrived I had to go pull Mike S's Ford out where you and I started with the spotting scopes when you showed up. You might remember he and I both gave and recieved a little ribbing over that one.

    Out West

Re: Out West I looked at that magazine this morning and he had 9 entries in the B&C with muleys then. In the last printing they did before he pulled them he had 13. Thats more trophy muleys than any other hunter. Not to mention any big ones killed since he pulled is entries, which I am sure there is atleast one or two.
  9. Re: what is the american grand slam a grand slam is all 27 or 28 species of north american big game. All by the way can be hunted in the U.S. Some people break it down by animals turkey, sheep, elk, bears etc. Some day I wil finish mine
  10. Re: Big Spending Hunters I can come close to that in just tags and application fees most years. Although I am unlucky in alot of draws and get some back, not to mention gas, diesel, horses, feed, taxidermist, scouting trips, and countless phone call to different folks in the area I hunt. Looking at it this way I should just hunt my back yard, but what fun would that be

    Out West

I was wondering if anyone from out west or a western big game hunter could answer a question for me? I met a man named Kirt Darner several years ago at a spotrs show in Denver. I planned a hunt with him and then had to back out due to a family issue. I know there are accusations floating around about questionable hunting activity that he has been involved with. I believe he has paid his debt to society and has gotten his hunting privledges back as well as his outfitters licence. He has killed more B&C muleys than any other hunter alive. I have read both of his books several times and want to plan another hunt with him. What I am wondering is can anyone tell me where he is or maybe put me in contact with him. I have heard conflicting reports, some say he is living in Grants New Mexico and others Say he is in Crawford Colorado. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. All accusations aside he is still the man when it comes to finding trophy muleys. He is the reason I live and die western big game to this day. I have contacted Rich LaRocco the man that co wrote both of his books and he hasn't spoken to him in a few years and is uncertain of his where abouts.

  17. Re: THE GREAT COLORADO ELK HUNT I am planning on trading it for a power stroke this summer but incase that doesn't happen I mentioned what I have. I had a weak moment this summer when they had the employee discount thing goin on. My dad tells me the same thing. I was born and raised ford.
  18. Re: THE GREAT COLORADO ELK HUNT Guys Steve is a hoot to have around camp. He came and spent a week guiding handicapped hunters with me in early December. I am planning on returning the favor by guiding some of the same group on a speedgoat hunt with him. I am looking foreward to this trip. I have a few elk under my belt and must say they are second only to axis deer as far as table fare goes. I will be leaving for this hunt from Eastern Nebraska. I have room for 2-3 hunters or atendees I should say to ride along. I have a new 2005 chevy 3/4 ton crew cab. I will also be taking two horses in a 16 foot trailor, so there will be ample room for everyones stuff. Both can be used a saddle horses but once something hits the ground I'm sure one will become a pack animal for the time being. I also own a pair of 14x16 wall tents with heaters and will have ample room for some folks to stay as long as those who do share in the work of setting them up an taking them down as well as keeping them orderly inside and cutting some fire wood. My passion lies in hunting western big game and steve is just the one you want along your first time out. We spoke in length about this on the phone last nite and I decided this would be a great hunt. I would also like to take a scouting trip into this area in july or august and anyone along the way is more than welcome to go or if someone from out that way wants to met up that too would be great. If you are planning on going and live near me or somewhere out east I would be glad to have you ride along. Even if you are coming from western SD or somewhere I could pick you up in southern wyoming. If your interested please let me know I really would like to find someone to ride along. Please send me a PM if this interests you.
  19. Re: Womens Rifle Thanks guys I am really torn on the subject. AJ how easy or difficult are the components to load the 7x57? Is brass easy to come by? What bullet does it take. I ned a new reloading book. I have ben using the same ones so long I just wrote them on a card and put them by my bench. I loaned my books out never to be returned by a someone I cant remember who? I plan on buying a new book soon but any ideas for the meantime?
  20. Re: Womens Rifle They are very similar rounds, basically the same thing. The slugs are the same size.
  21. Re: Womens Rifle Would the 243, 6mm and the likes be a tad on the light side for western big game?
  22. My wife will be hunting with me on two trips this year. I have her going into Idaho's area 45 on a mule deer hunt with me. We are also planning a hunt for her to take an oryx in New Mexico. She will probably do other hunts in the future with me, All of my hunts are western big game as that is my passion. I am considering 2 different rifles for her. The first is a 7x57, and the other is the 308. I am wondering your thoughts on these rifles as she is a small to medium frame and will be hunting other wester big game in the future such as elk, sheep, black bears etc.

    .243

Re: .243 The hornady V-max in 58 gr (i think it is, the box is out in my shop) is what I have used for a few years with great success. I use a touch less than I use for deer rounds. I use 4831 powder.
