  1. I am planning to try my hat at elk hunting in CO next year and had a few questions. First, can a non-resident apply for a first season rifle tag in a restricted unit? I am looking at units in the region around unit 500, these all look to be fairly low preference point units to draw and I was wondering about the elk densities in the national forests around unit 500. Like anyone I would like to take a trophy bull, but am more interested in getting out and learning about elk and hunting out west. Any advice would be appreciated.
  2. Ivories looked to be about as big around as a penny and flattened off. Biologist aged the bull at 8 yrs. old.
  3. I was lucky enough to draw a once in a lifetime bull elk tag in the Wichita Mts. NWR in southwestern Oklahoma this year. The refuge is about 59,000 acres of the roughest country you will ever run across in this part of the nation. I saw 16 bulls on the hunt and harvested this 7x8 at 9 am on December 13. I shot him at 237 yards with a 300 RUM. He was traveling with 3 other mature bulls, traversing a mountain when I took him. The hunt was an awesome experience and I would recommend applying for the hunt to anyone who lives in the Oklahoma area. http://
  4. We had a great closing weekend in OK. The pintails were out in force as well as quite a few mallards. I was able to take my first banded bird, a banded pintail. All in all a fun memorable weekend.
  5. I bought him from a guide who lives at Tuttle, OK and guides on Fort Cobb lake.
  6. Here is Gus, he will turn 4 in February and is just getting into his prime.
  7. I usually remove the deer from the area before I dress it. I do not want to drag a deer through weeds and dirt with an open abdominal cavity. If you get dirt and grass etc in the abdomen/thorax of the deer you are going to promote spoilage/waste.
  8. Headed out in about 6 hours for the bow opener in OK. Good luck to everyone else, and have a safe hunt. Post up your success pics from the opening weekend.
  9. Hey Colorado, In my opinion no one diet is perfect for every dog. I will say though that you generally get what you pay for in pet foods (feeding your dog Ole' Roy is about the same as you eating a diet of doughnuts and fried chicken every day). There are several dog food manufacturers which make high quality foods. I would stick with Science Diet, Purina (the Pro-plan diets), or Iams/Eukanuba. I know it costs alot to feed a dog these days, but you can tell a difference in the dogs that come in my clinic that are on better foods. The biggest difference that i notice is in the skin/coat of the dogs. The dogs on the better diets typically do not suffer issues with dry skin and or a dull coat. There is alot of research being done on proper diets for dogs, especially sporting dogs by these companies and the ones who are doing the research do charge a bit more for their food.
  10. Have you looked at the WIHA atlas on the KS department of wildlife website?
  11. When is the average rut for elk in central Colorado. I am trying to plan an archery trip for 2011 and would like to time it to coincide as close to the rut as possible.
  12. What is everyone's opinion on Muzzy broadheads. I have been using 100 grain 3 blades for years and just picked up a new 6 pack today and intend to continue to use them. Just wondered what experiences you all have had with muzzy heads lately?
  13. Hey all, I am looking at going on my first archery Elk hunt in 2011 in CO. I am looking for advice for what areas would be best to hunt. I am looking for a hunt which will give us opportunities to see decent numbers of elk, with a possibility to harvest a bull possibly and at least a cow. We will have about 1 week to hunt. I have a cabin that I can stay in and hunt units 50, 500, and 49. I am just looking for advice on where the herd numbers would be best for us to have a fun experience as well as see some animals. If anyone has ever applied to draw these units how long does it take to draw an archery either sex tag? We would also be willing to go to a different area to have a good chance to see elk. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thank you
  14. I am planning on putting in some RoundUp ready beans and corn in the next month. I also thought about putting in a strip of clover, but in Southwestern, OK we have never grown any clover so I do not have much experience with it. I will probably put in some milo also as when the rains do not come in a timely fashion the corn tends to get a little crispy.

  17. We use 16-32 oz. per 10 gallons in our sprayer for general agriculture use, and we go through alot of it. The amount you use will depend on a few things, but the most important components are the number/type of plants you are looking to kill and what type of glyphos you are using. If you are using a generic I would hold closer to the 3 oz. per gallon, but if using the RoundUp WeatherMax then I would feel safe backing down to 1.75-2 oz. per gallon. Grass tends to be tougher to kill than broadleaves, so again if in grass I would up the rate. Another thing to think about is the use of a surfactant to help the uptake of the spray into the plant you are looking to kill. Last, If you have a mixed bag of plants with grass and broadleaves, it sometimes works well to combine glyphosphate with a broadleaf selevtive such as amine 2-4D. Hope this helps.
  18. Shot an Oklahoma double with a buddy tonight. Both were long beards, we will try to get photos up soon.
  19. I would look at either rogerssportinggoods.com or macks prairie wings if you want new stuff as they are having great sales lately. I have a few shells that I could part with if you are interested in driving to Stillwater.
  20. Yeah, all of these hunts are within about 1 hour of Stillwater.
  21. Good looking ducks, you have to love the pintails. Where are you hunting at? I am in Oklahoma and most years we see quite a few pintails, but this year I have not seen quite as many.
  22. Good looking hunt, the geese are definately in Oklahoma.
  23. We have had a great season for waterfowl in Oklahoma so far. I typically do not hunt waterfowl before the start of the second season as I am busy hunting deer during the first season. The middle to end of december was filled with ducks and the last couple of weeks have been great for geese. Here are a few pics of our days afield. Good luck to all.
  24. Has anyone ever hunted in the Pike National Forest near the Fairplay Colorado area for elk or mule deer? If so is this area a decent area for a quality hunt, meaning are there good populations of elk and mule deer. I am not worried about shooting a 350" bull or a 200" mule deer but I would like to have a chance at a mature animal. Any advice would be appreciated. I would be looking at applying for 2010 tags.
