Hey yall well im gonna do some calling at my parents place and was wondering if some raw meat will lure them in to there area. My mother called me last night and said that the family dog was attacked by a group of coyotes. He is a older cocker spaniel and cant run well. He is still alive he is not badly injured as im told, he has some punctures on his back and neck. They have been hearing them usually every night so id like to kill a couple. I just can believe it , im so infuriated by so tonight i think im gonna set up on there deck and wait with the ar15 for them and do some distress calling. Dan

So i went out Friday evening to the stand where i shot my first deer. At first it was slow then around 6:10 like clock work the deer came to my food plot 10 yards away. There were 4 that i could see up close 3 fawns and 1 mama , the doe was to small so i just observed them eating and playing. Well as she walked west of me she got some of my wind and new something was up just couldnt tell where or what she smelled. So after that she was very territorial and she would stomp and start to snort/wheeze at me and into the woods. She ended up walking and doing that for a while as she did that i made the same noise and she was doing it back. All in all a very cool experience and im loving the new spot i picked for my stand everytime i go out i see deer. Dan

Is there a certain way i'am supposed to align these to the fletchings? Im shooting ICS BowHunters and the guy at the shop just screwed the inserts in how ever and didnt ask for a preference. Im down to 3 arrows so i need to get more, It does'nt really matter for the slick tricks they fly great any way . Just the Buzzcuts i question for proper alignment , they are 100 grains 4 blade.

I still cant believe it had happened i was so calm afterwards my girlfriend thought i was lying so i took her out there. I cant wait to go back out im gonna do a european style mount and just engrave it as first deer/buck and date 9/18/09. I never realized how difficult it was to draw back under the pressure of a live animal. All the target practice in the world will help but it cant prepare you for the feeling that runs through the body. Im hooked for life and can call my self a hunter finally!

The first arrow had a magnus stinger buzzcut , i grabbed the first closest arrow for the second shot which was a slicktrick. The slicktrick went all the up the chest and made a 5 inch slash on the hide. I just got done grinding up about 25 lbs of meat. The big Quarters weighed about 15lbs each and got some real nice meat. gonna do a skull mount. Will post some pics in a few im whooped from all day of skinning , trimming, butchering! Dan

Well the pressure is off for me dropped the hammer on my first deer last night with a bow. At 6:15pm had a spike with 11inch antlers come in. He started at 30 yards and came to about 10 and i shot. This was family land and the past 2 seasons of no deer payed off. I feel very proud and the feeling is unbelieveable. The shot wasnt that good i was real nervous and shaky ( the fever) hit him under the spine so he dropped right there then made a perfect shot which ended him I ll post a pic later have to skin and cut him up. I was really suprised my Girlfriend helped me out gutting as i didnt have anyone there to help out. Dan

Well Tuesday was Opener here in Connecticut went out in the evening at my parents land and hunted over my throw n gro plot. Got out at 6:10 pm and bout 15 mins after getting harness in the tree had 2 good size fawns walk my way and ate in the plot. They were bout 5 yards away and were a perfect broadside , didnt want to kill a baby opening day and thought momma would come but no show. Went out yesterday to check the trail for a rope i dropped and there were 4 big ol swamp donkeys in the field. So friday evening hunt and a saturday hunt in mind. Much better action than last year.

I had bought a stealthcam last year i think it was the 550 model . It took real nice pictures but when i went to put feed in my feeder only 2 weeks after putting the cam up it was dead. Ate the D batteries within 2 weeks i couldnt believe it. Im gonna get a new cam this year just not sure what type.

I remember the first time i went hunting before i had a stand. I sat on a rock behind a stonewall looking into the field, that was some creepy mornings. I remember one time hearing branches snapping around me and then it was really foggy across the field and seeing te silhouettes of 3 coyotes in the field. The other time i had some circling around me and i shined a light and could see little eyes looking at me . That was the day i bought my first climber haha. I still get the nervousness going out early while walking but once i get in the stand and 16' up i feel fine and calm.

Ok well i have found my spot that i believe will be a good choice. I cleared out some land in the woods about 60 to 70 yards from my previous season stand spot. Im going to plant a throw n grow plot inthe woods i cleared out which is about 35-40 yds x 15 yds wide. Theres a tree across the atv trail across the plot that is 10 yards or so from the edge that is on the stone wall with some good cover. It also is on the edge of the field where they seem to walk out to so im hoping it will be a good call on my part.

Ok well im gonna be putting some of the throw n grow stuff near my stands and want to see if i am gonna be set with getting the ground ready. Im gonna cut down the area with a Brush Mower and rake the area free from dead debris. I will then spray some round up in the area and wait a week till it takes an effect. Rake the dead and break soil Do i need to lime is it a good idea for the small stuff? Would it be best to plant down the trail in the woods or on the edge of a field either way i believe it will be a good location.

GW nailed it. The walls range from 2-3 feet tall the deer do jump over them. My stand is set up right near a knocked over one so they cross it. The walls are/were for cattle and boundary markers. They have been there for at least 100 years we find old horse shoes from time to time.

Heres some input i had to get going for work so i rushed the post. The field goes down hill about halfway over from the stand location. My stand is behind the stone wall with a break in the wall to access the field. About 60 yards to the right of my stand is another break in the stone wall where i get does coming through. They have a tendencey to cut straight across and then go left so outta my way for a shot. They seem to randomly walk the trails but i usually see them wear the main entrances. I have oaks all over and maples with plenty of acorns. The upper rt corner of the field is a dirt road way, the south end of the land is where deer seem to be in the early mornings for bedding then they come out in the field. I would like to plant some forage or plot mix for the season to try and hope for the best. Ill get some pics this weekend on foot so you guys can get a idea. Id like to get 2 more ladder stands and drop them in the area. I wear all scentlok/blocker gear had a spike walk up on my stand last year using the same trail i came in on which was the atv trail that goes to my stand. I always walk to the stand on foot , ive tried walking the east border to the south and the most luck i had was by walking the atv trail to the stand. Dan

I have a aerial photo of my parents land i hunt on i would like to hear from some of you guys where you think a good stand spot would be. Map legend>yellow-boundaryorange - current ladder stand locationbrown - atv trails / deer trailsgrey- stonewallblue-river We do get quite a bit of deer just seems to be wrong place when im there . The woods are somewhat thick with wetlands. what do you guys think Dan

DO you plant it each season like a spring planting and fall or will one planting (Spring) last its way through deer season and into winter?
-
thats the kind i meant evolved habitat throw kind. I dont want to spend a lot on a seed for a plot thats a throw kind. Is it a perennial or annual kind they sell?
-
Hey well i never really got my plot in the field going but looking to start a plot in the woods on each side of a trail the deer use. What seeds are good for a no till product. The kind where i can rake and throw seed to dirt contact. Looking to do so in the spring cleared some of the new sapplings and briars today . I was looking at Biologic or the harvest kind . What yall use . I still have a big jug of roundup to use. Ill search around and see what is good , Im in Connecticut. Thanks Dan

Ok at my prents land that i hunt there is mucho Deer there. I put a ladder stand in a awesome spot thats bout 10yds off the field in the woods, and faces about 4 trails they travel and a huge field they rome. I have a feeder bout 100 yards down the way.But the problem is my stand is on the other side of the property, whats the best way to get to it? Walk the bottom side of the field and along the stone walls to get to it or go through the woods? The deer seem to be in the woods in the morning. Last year i spooked deer when walking the woods, i was thinking just walking the field.

i live in willimantic was originally in scotland CT. Far eastern side. We hunting Pachuag in the morning and bear hill where i saw the Doe. My Father in law got a doe today in his field Lucky SOB.

Well my Father in law and i got up at 3 left the house at 4 or so and got into the woods at 5: 30. We hunted a big public land area 28000 acres, we both thought it was a lot of area and had no luck neither. We then went into town and got some food and tried a different place a 300-500 acre area. I setup in a tree 10 yards from a intersection of trails and was up about 16 feet not within a half hour had a Doe come in 40 yards away eating, She didnt see me or smell a thing and she did a loop . I had no clear shot but at least i saw one on opening day. Good luck to everyone else.
