That's awesome man! Every year huh! I need to book my first elk hunt with you!

Late harvest and hot weather. I'm not seeing the deer numbers either. Beans are being harvested now and corn in about 2 weeks where I hunt in Central/Eastern IL. Hopefully this cool front moving in Tuesday will help.

Just now reading this and I'm a bit surprised by both sides. First: I'm still pretty new here and I'm sure glad there wasn't a 2000 post criteria to enter the contest this year. This is my first deer contest and I'm having a blast! Each day I look forward to seeing a smiling team member with his/her harvest. I hope something like this wouldn't cause drastic changes like the 2000 post criteria. Second: Crazylegz I've read some of your posts over the past several months and you seem like a reasonable guy. I think your comment about not signing up if you had known there were no prizes was not a well thought out post and now you're stuck on the defense. Sometimes people say things (write) and regret latter. Maybe this applies to you??? If so just let go of that pride and apologize. We all say/do dumb things once in a while. Now if this doesn't apply to you, then the door has been opened and all you have to do step out. BTW: Thanks to all who help or have helped with the deer contests. >Frank

Great job! That's a nice looking doe from a fellow Fred Bear bowsman. I'm using the older TRX model. I spoke with a farmer last night and secured permission to hunt the corner of another farm just north of the one I hunt currently. He's a super nice guy and owns and rents several large farms. He leases some of the land (for hunting) for a lot of money. The area I have permission to hunt on isn't real big (maybe 20 acres), but no one else hunts it and it will make a nice option for me in case of a north wind. Funniest thing happened to me as I left his farm house late last night. I had my car window down and his black cat crawled into my car. As I was leaving I shut the car door and that things shot out of the back seat, up my neck, over my head, and out the window. I thought I was being attacked. I don't think I've been more surprised in my life. I wound up with several nice scratches on the back of my neck.

Never had a name for my bow, but I name the big bucks I shoot after the knights of the round table. So far I've got Sir Launcelot and Sir Galahad. This year maybe King Arthur???

Great buck Curt!

My first attemp at posting an old thread: Might find this thread helpful. http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69313 Last season I shot a deer at dusk and recovered it about 12 hours later. The temperature was below 30 degrees the entire 12 hours. The shot was back a little and I know I hit some of the intestines. The deer was 3-4 years old, and the meat was fine.

I hear ya man. I'd be hot. I've never had that happen to me, but a lot of my friends have. It's another reason I like packing in and OUT my 14 pound Summit climber for each hunt. I set up as many trees and shooting lanes as I want and never have to worry about the tree not being there.
-
Always nice to hear those first deer stories. Congrats!
-
Glad to hear you got your cofidence back.
-
Same here, except I use the summit open shot (14 pounds). You still need to get the tree ready and clear shooting lanes, but I have no worries about my stand being stolen.

Didn't see my name on the link. I have a couple climbers that I get 25-30 feet with. I also have a hang on that I use my 16 ft. ladder with. I have it right at the top of the ladder. I prefer to be up at least 25 feet unless the tree provides me with excellent cover. My biggest problem is that deer can come from several directions and when I finish cutting shooting lanes my cover isn't that great anymore.

Welcome Tink. All this time I thought Terry Rhom (spelling might be wrong there) was the maker of Tinks because of the monsterbucks videos. Looks like you're fitting right in here on the forums! >Frank

Happy birthday Eric, I hope you land some awesome steelhead this month!

My 2 cents: I use scent blocker and scentlock. Also use scent free rubber boots. Do they work? Perhaps they knock a little scent down. Enough to keep a deer from smelling you? No way, not even close (from my experience anyway). Are they worth the money? If you have pleanty of cash to spend why not spend it on your passion. I guess it's worth it then. If you're just getting by like me I'd say no. My scent reducing stuff generally comes my way as gifts on birthday's or christmas. I put little faith in it and sometimes would rather wear lighter clothes. I do like the underarmour wear. It reduces my sweating (significantly) and less sweat means less odor.

Nice job on the doe Joe. From the picture it looks like public land? We are on th board! My next day out will be Thursday.

Years ago I remember how down I'd get with a miss. Still makes me shake my head, but now I only get down when I make a bad hit. Hunt long enough and you'll be thankful for "air ball arrows" because you know there isn't a dead deer going to the coyotes. A few days ago I had a sure shot at a doe at 20 yards quartering away. I thought I hit her after the shot. The sound even sounded like a hit. I waited an hour and got down to "get my doe" only to find my arrow without a spot of blood on the arrow or the ground. I did have a couple hairs in the feathers. The shot must have went over the back and hit some beans causing the sound I heard. I'm an experienced bow hunter with 2 P&Y bucks on my wall and still miss and can't figure out if I hit a deer or a bean.:D

Not sure of an official definition of "hunting the wind"??? Buckbuster made excellent points. I would define it as: (given a wind direction) one places their body in a location that will allow his/her scent to be blown in the least likely direction deer are or will be. Walking in to the stand places scent on the ground which is not exactly the same as hunting the wind. I guess I'd call it hunting the ground. Same concept as above applies. Walk into a stand/blind from a direction deer are least likely to be or be at.

Right click on the signature and click "save picture as". Then save it on your computer somewhere where you can find it. I saved it as a JPEG (image file). Then open your profile and click User CP (user control panel). Under settings and options click edit signature. Scroll down until you see the signature picture area. Go to the upload section: Option 2 - Upload Image From Your Computer Browse your computer and upload the signature wherever you saved it at. Then click Insert Signature Picture and finally save the signature.

Saw the 9-pointer again at 30 yards tonight and let it walk. Saw another 8-pointer 1.5 year old and the 4-pointer again as well. At 6 I saw a doe and took a 20 yard quartering away shot. Grazed the back. No blood, but some hair on my feathers. If i'm gonna miss that's how I like them to be.

Great deer and shot! You'll never forget your first with a bow.

Sounds like the deer are moving into the fields at random areas. Just keep playing the muscial chairs game and you'll get the right one sooner or later.
