On this particular deer, those are my exact thoughts! Score doesnt matter. You can grow a big typical buck, but you cant make a deer a freak like this one. I am just tickled to have the history and opportunity to take this buck!

Well the story of the buck that I nicknamed "Ol' Droptine" has come to a close this past Sunday morning. I first discovered the existence of this buck last November as he was cruising looking for some does. I had the perfect opportunity to shoot him broadside at 42 yards and elected not to shoot and see if he would give me a closer shot. Well a long story short, he went back the way he came from and didnt give me the shot I wanted. We saw him again that evening and many more times throughout the season. Shortly after we saw him for the first time he broke off 6 tines. He was a 16 point last year with a gross NT score of 148". I know this because I found both sides of his sheds last winter. Early November this year I see him again. Unfortunately he did not grow the droptine that gave him his name. He came in to 50 yards on this morning and beds down and gives me the perfect opportunity to take the shot, but there was limbs in between him and myself. Again, Ol' Droptine eludes me.Jump ahead to Sunday November 21st, 2010. I had seen him the morning before and did not get a close enough shot. So on this morning, I had the perfect wind to get setup on where I was hoping to get a shot at him. I am sitting there for about 30 minutes and I caught movement about 150yards away. It was him! Again I did not have a good comfortable clear shot. Of course I was frustrated once again that he had put the slip on me. 20 minutes later, here he comes directly at me to come scent check a doe I had bedded at 95 yards. He was starting to put the slip on me once again when I gave him a loud maaaaaat to stop him in about a 6-8 inch shooting lane I had at 105 yards. I slowly squeeze the trigger and BOOOOM! The smoke clears and I see no white tail or buck running away! I throw up my binoculars to see Ol' Droptine laying dead on the ground, right where he stood. I hit a little higher that I had planned but still caught the top of both lungs and the shock of the bullet was so close to his spine that it dropped him. I was very excited with the shot due to being the first shot that I have ever fired out of my new CVA Accura Muzzleloader at a deer. I guess it was one heck of a way to break it in.He is not a huge scoring buck like I had my sights set on for this year, but he is as unique of a buck as I will ever shoot and I couldnt be happier with the whole story how it all unfolded. To those of you that have had a tough season like myself, keep your chin up and your time will come. To those who also have been lucky enough to be successful this year, congrats! Sorry for such a long story, but it had to be told in full to understand the history that I have had with Ol Droptine! He may not be the highest scoring buck that I have taken, but he is the oldest, most mature buck. He was at least a 4.5 year old deer, if not older. I have attached a trailcam pic and a field photo of him as well.

First # that popped in to my head was 136". Hard to tell for sure without a spread. Nice long g2's for sure!

i passed this guy up twice last archery season at very close ranges! 7 yards the first time and 18 the second time. both out of the same stand. i hope he made it! the one with the droptine i passed up several times during ml season due to breaking off several tines.

well i put on many many miles this year, more than ever before. not only did i enjoy the rewards of doing so, but i really enjoy the exercise too. my season ended at 18 and a really nice dead 8 point. 10 of the 18 were matches! i cant wait to see one in particular through my peep sight next year! he is a 16 point that scored 148 this year!! the final picture is all of my finds minus a set of spikes that i am having made into a knife set.

i sure hope not. Considering that was the smallest of the 3 that i got an opportunity at that year.

I WAS OUT SHED HUNTING YESTERDAY AND AFTER LOOKING FOR ABOUT 3 HRS. MY EYES BECAME SEVERELY DRY AND ALMOST BLURRY. I WAS THINKING, MAN THERE HAS GOT TO BE A WAY TO CLEAR MY EYES TO KEEP LOOKING LONGER. THE LIGHT BULB WENT OFF AND I THOUGHT NEXT TIME BRING A SMALL BOTTLE OF CLEAR EYES WITH ME. IM PLANNING ON SPENDING ALL DAY SHED HUNTING TOMORROW, SO IM GUNNA GIVE IT A TRY. ANYONE TRIED THIS OR HAD THE SAME PROBLEM?:poke:

That's just crazy!! I shed hunt in Stueben Co. and I have found 16 sheds this year. All of them are this years sheds too. I havent seen a buck with any headgear in over 3 weeks.

I shot this buck during the indiana muzzleloader season of 08'. My taxidermist (dad), took quite a while to get to it done, but i am extremely pleased with it. He is very particular and im glad he is. What do you guys think of it?

i found this one saturday night. it had dropped before the snow storm hit. i hunt up in steuben co.

i went out to the properties to check my trail cameras saturday night and saw several bucks that still had both sides. as the darkness settled in, i realized i still needed to go check my trail cams. after i checked them all i took a different trail out of the woods to show a buddy that was with me a tree that i had planned on hanging a stand in for next season. after i showed him the tree, i took a few more steps and happened to look down and saw something that looked like the tip of an antler sticking out of the 8-10 inches of snow we had on the ground, so i figured i might as well at least check and see if it was. sure enough it was the buck that i really wanted to try and find his sheds. see pics attached. safe to say that i was shocked that i found it in the dark when i wasnt even starting to look for sheds due to the snow that was still on the ground. you bet i will be out there as soon as the snow melts to try and find the other side and hopefully many more!! at least i had someone there as a witness it, so nobody can say i was a b-s'er.check out the piebald deer and other bucks still carrying both sides!! the last pic is of the buck that i found the shed of last night.

gettin' close!i went out to our one property saturday evening to sit and see what came out. when i was pulling up to the property there was a nice 9 point and another small buck and some does already out feeding. they went back into the woods and i got in position to glass for the night. although the 9 point still had both sides, i did see at least one buck that had one side left. i attached the trail cam picture that i got of the 9 point earlier in the season.

not where i hunt!well it certainly seems early in my spots. i checked my trail cams while doing a little shed hunting yesterday, and it seems that 90% of the deer are still sporting their head gear. i actually was lucky enough to glass the droptine buck for about 15 minutes. he still had both sides. here are a few pictures of what i had on my cameras of the last week.

Taking half day off work to go do a little searching. im taking a half day off of work to go see what i can find. not expecting to find much, if anything, but i cant take it any longer. i need to find them b4 the tree rats do. i cant stand it when i find a shed when they are all chewed up.

Last night!! Well i went out last night and sat in my truck with a buddy of mine in hopes of seeing a bunch of deer and some good bucks. We pulled up on top of this big hill in the mIddle of our cut bean field and there were already a few deer in the cut corn. Luckily it didnt alarm them too much and they went back to feeding. It wasnt a half hour later and there were deer coming out everywhere. We were looking at about 20-30 deer and i look behind me about 300 yards and there is another pile of 21 feeding in the cut beans. At this point i have only seen a hand full of bucks and they were all small 1.5yr. Old bucks. As it gets later more and more deer dump out of the woods in to the cut corn. To our amazment we Never saw any bucks that caught our attention. We did see quite a few bald deer that had bodies that stood out more than others. With all this being said, i belIeve that the majority of my bucks have dropped. I did not check my trail cameras to see if there were any bald bucks, because i didnt want to spook any of the deer that were in the fields. I will check them this weekend and let y'all know what i come up with. All in all it was worth the sit. I saw at least 60-70 deer and a couple longbeards. Plus i have a good idea of where to concentrate my efforts here in a few weeks when i feel it is the right time to start looking.
