  1. I wear Lacrosse in the early season and Rockys later on, I think they are corn stalkers?? I have had them for several years. When I hunt in New York, I wear pack boots, they may be lacrosse too, but I don't do much hiking. They are heavy but really warm.
  2. Hey Mr. Swampy, thanks for posting this. My Dad was not a hunter but I was the only Grandson of a very avid outdoorsman. I have memories of him carrying me up a muddy bank in New York while squirrel hunting when I was about 4 years old. The old man and I would camp on the New River in WV after he retired and catch cat fish. When I was still in school, I would go to visit in the summer and we would cut fire wood for deer season at the old family farm. We deer hunted together every year either in NY or WV. He passed in October of 2000 and I actually quit hunting for a few years. But now, when I head out to the woods, I somehow know he is with me. Soon enough, my son will be sitting next to me in the stand making a new life time of memories. I know the old man would have been proud of the seven pointer I shot last night.. I don't have the words to express how I miss him, I just don't...
  3. If you are new, a really good question to ask is "What type of safety harness?" I use a Moultrie (D-40, I think??) I just got into game cams this year. I works well for me and next time they are on sale, i'll buy two more. Tinks. It's what I have always used. Thermacell. No doubt the BEST 20 bucks you'll ever spend. Good luck in the woods. Doug

    .243

Well Doc, Since you put it that way, I would say that a .243 would do what you want it to do with no problems at all. Doug
  5. Well sir, I don't know you but.... If you find yourself in South Carolina before Jan. 1st. Consider a day of deer hunting on me! You can use one of my rifles too. I have been there my man and it stinks!

    Caller ID

Wife and I used to do that but my son is 5 now and he won't fall for it anymore. My normal response now is, "Well yes, I would love to hear more about what you're selling (service offering, begging for a donation for, etc.)" and then just set the phone on the counter and go on about my business.

    .243

Doc, "The most versatile caliber" debate will be raging on long after I am dead and gone. Is there one? I don't know. I hunt whitetail deer almost exclusively with a .270. I have a couple of .30-06s in the safe that I like to shoot as well and both have been to Maine with me hunting Black Bear and they were more than sufficient. Guess what, i killed a couple of coyotes while there on the second trip and they killed them just as dead as a .243 would. When I lived in NY, I got pretty hot and heavy with coyote hunting in the winter and bought a .22-.250 In a Ruger KVM-77 and loved it but I didnt NEED it. If I could only have one rifle (I cant imagine that) it would probably be a Model 70 Featherweight in .30-.06. Oh wait, I like to hunt with my 30-30 now and then too.... I am not sure if helped or made it worse!
  8. Hi and welcome to the forum. I son'r know anything about the rifles you mentioned. However, I do own a 30-06 in the Remington 700 and Winchester Model 70 flavors and will say that they are both shooters. I do not, however, own a .308. It is my opinion that either round will serve you well, excluding the grizzly option. I do most of my whitetail deer hunting with a Browning .270 and I like the rifle very much and shoot it well. I have had it for many years and I am acclimated to it. So there is my .02 cents. If you decide that you are interested in a Remington, Winchester or a Browning, I can give my opinions on each one of those as well. Best of luck!!!
  9. Thanks for the info. Doug
  10. Does anyone own a Henry lever action rifle? I want to buy my son one in .22 and was looking for feedback. Good or bad. Thanks, Doug
  11. Hey Hammerforged, Do you do any shooting over at the Spartanburg Gun Club? I shoot a little bit of skeet up here. I am thinking of heading down and shooting a round of sporting clays. I have never done that before.
  12. I'm sorry to say that the only thing I have hunted down there would be cat fish. I sure would like to put some pork in the freezer though!! Sorry I could not be more help.
  13. WOW. He sure blends in good!
  14. Exactly. Have you spoken to a social worker at your Dept. of Human Services?
  15. Nice shooting. Our rabbit season does not even open until late November. I would be afraid of tearing it up too much with a broadhead, I love fried rabbit and would hate to waste one. I have never shot a judo point.

I'm going to do my best! I'm pretty far in land, I dont think it will be a problem for us. Besides, we could really use some more rain. Best of luck on your hunt.
  18. Go to a local gun shop. They will charge you 30-50 bucks to handle the transaction and "POOF", you have a new shotgun. If you are being paid to write about it, it should simply be a business expense.

I don't really think it's a dilema at all. If you are not confident of making an ethical shot with your bow, take the rifle. Practice.... Practice and more practice then hunt with the bow next year. Well, that's what i would do if it were me, I am not trying to tell you what to do.

    Haircuts...

LOL!! Yes, my son did it when he was 3. It must be the age. Don't worry, it grows back.
  22. Great story and pics. Thanks for sharing.
