Never buying another Scentblocker Product Again!
patriotoutlaw replied to Squirrelhunter91's topic in Hunting Equipment
The looks of them "space boot" lookin things should've been enough to dissuade you from buyin them. Sometimes we get caught up in 'trends", though.Unless yer in extremely cold temps. LaCrosse Burly's are hard to beat. I"ve worn them for over 20 yrs. and usually get 2-3 yrs. of hard (huntin only) use out of em. -
where you huntin?
-
Chances are if he saw you for sure, that stand is toast. I'd move.

Huntin ain't a "hobby" to begin with. It's either in you or it ain't. I was born and raised right here. When I lost all the farms I had permission to hunt on for years because of city dudes leasin up all the ground or families dyin off and sellin out, it never ONCE crossed my mind to QUIT.? I came up with different approaches and at times I was huntin places nearly devoid of deer while staring at the place slap full of em that I "used to hunt". I eventually bit the bullet and bought what property I could afford and turned it into a virtual Whitetail paradise. Since it is comparitiviely small (57 acres) I still have more problems surrounding me (nieghbors OWN their land too and can do with it as they choose, even to my detriment) than you can shake a stick at. Tresspassers, road hunters, game wardens using their suit and badge and a promise of protection, to obtain permission on my non hunting neighbors 1000 acres (and they still hunt my fence), other neighbors shooting EVERYTHING with an antler, baiting illegally, other neighbors builldozing every square inch of woods off their places, dogs running loose, you name it, I've dealt with it. But never ONCE did I consider QUITTTING! They will take my bow/gun/camo when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers/body!

if I told ya, I'd have to kill ya.....

yep....I prefer a 7 or 8X, but most are 10x42's these days. They should be fine. Nikon is a fine optic for the $.

What caliber does everyone use for whitetail deer?
patriotoutlaw replied to just-an-illusion's topic in Deer Hunting
Have used all kinds, but currently the .308Win. with 168gr. Berger's in front of 42.5gr. of Varget is the medicine. -
Use rubber boots, rubber gloves and a garden rake works good. Make sure there is a chest high overhanging branch. Use James Valley Scent Co. 'Wallhanger' and 'Full Rut' gel lures with q-Tips or broken sticks. Read all of the instructions that come with your purchase and you cannot go wrong.

I used to have great success with a bleat call years ago. Once the "can" came on the seen and everybody started palying with it, like they're in an orchestra the results have diminished. However, if the deer in your area aren't used to being tormented by it they will respond under the right circumstances. I still carry mine every time I'm in the woods. I RARELY call "blind" with any call here in Missouri.

yeah, I heard the same dude say, he'd NEVER usae an open on impact broadhead, go figure.

I'll take ALL your Montecs off your hands.

Ruger 10-22 @ 8 yrs. old in 1969. Although I'm a leftie, I learned real quick to shoot right handed to keep the powder out of my eyes! Still got it w/the K-4 Weaver on it. God Bless my Daddy.

anyone own a springfield xd?
patriotoutlaw replied to MichiganHunter's topic in Hand Guns & Accessories
I have an XDM in 9mm. I have several handguns, both revolvers and pistols I love this pistol. It has became my personal carry gun. I am truly a .45ACP fan, but the capacity of the XDM opened an eye I didn't realize I had....a fully loaded pistol and 2 clips and you are a "walking arsenal". Loaded with good ammo, it will get the job done on any zombie on 2 feet. -
you still got that scope?

Yes it works. Before the scent killer "craze" came in, Myles Keller would put Baking Soda in a plastic bag, then put it on his head before adding his signature sock hat to cover it. I use it and Wool-Ite to wash my huntin clothes in for yrs. It works. DO NOT use Tide or any of your wife's favorite laundry det., they all contain UV brighteners. Wool-Ite does not. Baking Soda also works mixed with peroxide and distilled water to make your own scent killer spray. Alot cheaper and it does work. NOTHING that I am aware of will defeat a Whitetails nose 100% of the time. So DON'T forget the wind and just hunt!

Bubba, I don't know if you will ever get a chance to read this, but I wanted to tell you. I read your post and my jaw dropped. I had an open on impact broadhead made by a reputable manufacturer literally break off @ the shaft to where it looked like a hex head sticking out of my arrow. I blame the fact that the deer got away from me, on this. The shot was a little forward, so....I was shooting a crossbow @ the time due to a shoulder injury. I went to the bow shop the next day and was told by the owner to try The Montec G-5 broadheads. I replied that I had been unable to get fixed blade heads to fly out of my crossbow. And I had tried ALL the big name ones. He told me that if the Montec's didn't fly right, to bring em back and he would give my $ back. So I took em home. The next morning I shot a 140" 8pt. @ 5 yds. The Montec G-5 went thru the deer, approx. 6" into the ground, through a 1/2" thick rock and the only damage done was a "crunched" nose. I am almost positive that I could sharpen this out of it, but I kept the thing as a testament to the G-5's toughness as opposed to the breakability of the open on impact job, which I also kept. I thought that it was a rare thing that this occurred, but after reading your post, maybe not so much..... Anyway, I see NO reason to switch to any other broadhead, regardless of how many "huntin stars" advertise them, one of which I heard in say in a seminar that he "would never shoot an open on impact broadhead". Montec G-5's, unbeatable in my opinion.

If your bow is paper tuned, make sure that you spin test your broadheads too. Every Montec G-5 I have ever used on crossbow or compound, shoot to same point of impact as my field points w/o fail. Can't myself, speak for Muzzy's but they have a longstanding good reputation. As far as open on impact broadheads, I can speak and I wouldn't give you a $1 for a bucket full of em, rage included. Find what shoots, stick with it and stay away from fads.

You are looking at alot of $ to get started to do it right. If you are going to have them professionally tanned instead of tanning yourself, that will save you alot of $. You will need, at the least, these items: Fleshing beam fleshing knife ear splitter scalpel and blades feshing tools (my favorite is one I made from a baseball bat. It is about 18" long. From the end opposite the handle, sharpen to a point, so you can stick it in eye holes and nostrils) non-iodized salt (depends on the tanning outfit your using) sewing needle light thread heavy thread (artificial sinew is awesome) bank pins brads t-pins hide paste epoxy (natural, pink, black, and brown) curved sewing needle potters clay critter clay sculpting tool stout ruffer hide adjustment tool lip tucking tool lacquer thinner bondo, f'glass matting and resin, hardener dremel tool with small cone shaped tip propane torch and grinder screws mallet small level tape measure drill drill bit countersink bit staple gun and staples bright brushes fine 00 sable paint brush paint pallet oil paints: white, yellow ochre, black, burnt umber, red, pink air brush and paints: brown, black, bone white, red, med. pink matte polymer medium If you are going to do a "decent" job and plan on "finishing" the deer, you will need these items. You MAY get by w/o the airbrush or the oil paints one, but not both. I would recommend finding a local taxidermist who would "take you under his wing" for your project. There is alot more involved w/ mounting a deer head, that you will be proud of and enjoy looking at for the rest of your life, than most people realize. Mckenzie has everything you would ever need to complete the job. there are other supply houses out there, but most are lacking one thing or another that you may need. If you are serious about getting into taxidermy as a sideline or profession, save yourself a bunch of heartache AND headache and spend the $ to attend Joe Meder's deer mounting course and you will save yourself a lifetime worth of troubles. It is $ well spent. Even taxidermists who are already praticing, attend his courses and come out of there better than when they went in. You can find him on the net. He is THE MAN in the deer mounting taxidermy world as far as I and many others are concerned. I am on camospace as Patriotoutlaw if you want to holler @ me with any questions, I'll be glead to help you to the best of my ability. Good huntin. Take Care, Dave C. Patriotoutlaw
