Hunt for Heroes
The VeteranOutdoors TV group at www.VeteranOutdoors.com Got together with Critter Gitter ( League City, Texas) And took a 1981 CJ-7 and tricked it out. Then put the thing up for a Raffle to raise money for the Hunt for Heroes project. I purchased one ticket, being a disabled Viet Nam Era Vet, I really understand that we as citizens of this country should pay attention to these guys who gave so much for our country.
A Veteran, whether active duty, former service retired, National Guard or Reserve- is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America, for an amount up to and including MY LIFE.
That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country, many of whom are elected officials, who no longer understand or respect that fundamental truth.
ALL gave some and SOME gave ALL, for the rights and privileges we enjoy here in this country. So if you can read this thank your teacher and if you can read this in English THANK A VET>
Brad called me on Wednesday last week and said he needed some more Stedi-Stocks for an upcoming hunt and since he was visiting family near my house, "Would it be feasible for him to drop by when he left his relatives on his way to South Dakota?" I said sure but I might go Deer hunting this weekend and would not be home until late on Sunday evening. However the wife has been sick with H1N1 and I might just be home with her. He called again on Sat and said he was with his family about 35 miles south of here and would Sunday evening still be good. I said sure and went on with a few honey do projects.
Sunday Evening just before Dark, they showed up with 2 truck (VETERANOUTDOORS TV) and the jeep was following them. I was introduced to Pat an Iraq Army Helo Pilot who lost his leg in a shoot down crash in Iraq. And we discussed how many Stedi-Stocks they would need to be able to provide one to each hunter they would be taking the remainder of this year. Loaded them up and put them in their truck. Brad then mentioned that he had to drop off some things up the road and was meeting some other guys in Oklahoma City before he headed to South Dakota , when Cody asked what I thought of the Jeep. I said I thought it was pretty cool when I had first seen it in Houston at the TEXAS TROPHY HUNTERS EXTRAVAGANZA. I even bought a raffle ticket on it. Then I said I presume you are delivering it to the lucky guy who won it. He waked over dangling a set of keys in his hands and said your right and you are that guy, your name was drawn in the raffle. I was speechless ( that says a lot for me) All I could do was mumble thank you, thank you, thank you. They were filming this and we walked over to the JEEP, I got in and drove it around the block. Upon returning I got out of the Jeep and they asked what I thought, I said something like it is a pretty tricked out machine and drives great. however I thought. and told them I had to confer with my wife and partner, that we would like to donate this back to VETERAN OUTDOORS to raffle off again as the money that this would raise, would far overshadow my wants and needs. They said no way, it was mine, and I said yes way as what they were doing to help wounded veterans adapt back to society and the gift they are giving was very important to me and with Deb's concurrence, this is what I would like to do. I went in the house and asked her to get up from her sick bed and come see something. She looked at the Jeep and commented that was a really sharp jeep. I handed her the keys and told her it was ours that we had been the lucky ticket in the raffle.
She was ecstatic! Then I asked her if she concurred that we should refuse the award and give it back for another Raffle to raise more money for the Hunt for HEROES project. She, without even batting an eye, said why of course and you knew that you didn't even have to ask me as I agree 100%.
That's the story.
