http://www.altitudeoutdoors.com/over...y-mike-duplan/ Here is an excellent article by Mike Duplan, "Over the Counter in Colorado." A detailed article for the newbie or veteran hunter of the 92 Units in Colorado that have OTC tags for elk hunting. Perhaps this will allow folks to better decide where they might choose to hunt elk in 2016 with their OTC tags, and 2017 for the Realtree gathering. Long read... but excellent information. Grab your Colo Unit map and follow along in the read to see their location. Respectfully submitted, Hungry Horse

http://www.mytopo.com/products/hunt-...ies=DEL&gmu=53 Unit 53 boundary line in dark purple...also showing the West Elk Wilderness in dark green color, BLM in yellow, light green is public, white is private. Unit 53 and Unit 54 comprise most of the Wilderness area, with Unit 521 bordering it on the north and northeast. Unit 521 holds a portion of the Ragged Wilderness area. That irregular purple colored boundary line in the lower right side of Unit 53, is the Unit line between Unit 53 and Unit 54. See Colorado regulations for unit description for boundary lines. Click on the link, once it loads, click it again for more clarity. Hungry Horse

Great photo Fly, thanks for sharing. I was there in Aug 2003, the summer of the wildfires there. It is a spectacular NP. Photo opportunity on wildlife is great, just use common sense with the bears, even the mtn goats and bighorns.

Pointing dog: Thanks for posting those great photos of the Platora elk hunt. Aaron, sorry the bull got away from you. Looks like a good time for all, just a empty meat pole. Better luck next year guys. : ) HH in Pa

Trevor, Thanks for sharing your photos. Glad you all had a safe hunt and a good time. I am sure in time you will figure out the elk escape routes and their hiding holes. Did anyone get a group photo of all the elk hunters in camp? Thanks for sharing the hunt/camp area. : ) HH in Pa

Charlie, Do you have a internet reception and the ability to make posts in Platora, so you can do updates of the hunt ? Hope you all arrived safely and are having a good time. : )

Cowboy, Thank you for the reply on sightings. Somehow I missed your reply on the 5th, had checked several times. I am good on photos, Charlie has allowed me to see his photo albums of his 2010 hunt. How did you do in bow season, as it has ended today. I am a bowhunter of 40 years here in Pa. Good luck to you and the gang in rifle season. I am trying to decide if I can afford this trip and hunt. : )

Cowboy: Thanks for sharing the photos. I am a chat friends of Charlie's. How were the number sightings on the elk herds in the area ? Were there many bowhunters in the area ? Know the Tobacco lake location, up there pretty high. : )

what's your favorite rifle?
Hungry Horse replied to Cole14bowhunting's topic in Rifles & Accessories
Double A thank you for the welcome as well as Cole 14. AA I think we met originally on huntingnet.com chat then again on huntingresource. Yes I have been in Realtree chat here a few times, only a few folks were there. Strut 10, I used to hunt Indiana county a lot when younger on SGL 174 near Urey. Drove up RT 422 to Indiana then Rt 286 to Glen Campbell, I actually had relatives in Glen Campbell then. Unfortunately they have passed away. I miss hunting that area. Good hunting all !:boo::cowboy: -

Strut 10 Thank you, I was a memeber a long time ago also, apparently if we are idle a long time, we get disconnected from the membership. I have a Pa friend whose last name is Strut and loves turkey huinting. I am in Beaver county, Chippewa area, where are you Stut 10. Colo Silvertip is a chat friend of mine. Again, thank you for the warm welcome. HH in Pa :cowboy: -
what's your favorite rifle?
Hungry Horse replied to Cole14bowhunting's topic in Rifles & Accessories
Double AA long time no see or hear. Was it on www.huntingnet.com or www.huntingresource.com/ when we chatted ? Beautiful custom builds there, love the digital camo, is that a dipped film coating? Who did that for you? In regards to the OP question on favorite rifles, I enjoy my Rem Mod 722 in 222 Rem and 10 X Leupold for varmits. I also have a Herters J9 sporterized mauser 6mm Rem for deer and coyotes. My go to rifle right now is a LH Rem Mod 700 30/06 with a Redfield 3x9. There have been several new used purchases that have not made it to the range yet, A Tikka T3 .300 WSM with Burris 4.5x14x42 BDC scope purchased for my son. It has a Colo 5x6 elk to it's credit. A Browning A Bolt hunter LH .300 WSM with Nikon Pro Staff 3x9x50, and Browning Medallion LH 7mm WSM with a Nikon Monarch 3x12 x42 which needs rings lapped and mounted and last but not least a LH Browning A Bolt SS Stalker .338 Win mag with a Nikon 3x12x42 BDC reticle, needing rings lapped and mounted. Hope those last 4 do well on the rifle range and western elk hunts. Also picked up a Ruger Super Redhawk SS 44 mag with red dot scope for carrying while scouting elk in grizzly bear country. Although they say Pepper Spray is the best medicine for surprise attacks, the big 240 gr JHP gives me greater sense of "real safety" ! I do carry pepper spray on hikes in the wstern NP's, Glacier, GTNP and Yellowstone. Last time I had a grizz at 20 yds taking photos, the pepper spray was in the backpack in the Suv, LOL, not good ! Glad he and I showed mutual respect for each other that day ! My gut feeling is the Browning Hunter LH 300 WSM or the 7mm WSM will be my new long range favorites. Previous owner said the Browning .300 WSM gave a 1" group at 200 yds. Looking forward to some range time. Good hunting folks. :cowboy:
