  1. Well it was a windy warm day and I decided I was going to go out and sit in the woods in hopes something would walk by. I sat out there from 2 to 6 pm. I started to walk back to the truck though the cut bean field when I noticed 4 figures walking right at me about 50 yards. It was 4 does. They had no clue I was standing in the bean field. I had only about 10 minutes of legal hunting left. So the only thing I knew to do was get down on my belly. I had a good old military prone position going and just happen to take my crossbow this time. They messed right out of confident range and it got dark quicker it seemed. 20 minutes later I couldn't see anything. They had to have moved within 20 yards or closer because I could hear the crunching as they ate. I remained laying there so I didn't spook them and ruin the spot for future hunts. I didn't hear anything so I stood and walked quietly the rest of the way. Two things were going through my mind. 1 little light and I had to be sure what I was shooting at. 2 making sure I abided by the law. Half hour after dark is off limits and becomes a safety concern! Little bit of military rules of engagement thoughts going through my mind. That was cool!
  2. what can you say! He gave permission to me and my buddy and later I found out he gave permission to others also. But he never told me he gave permission to others then again he don't have to either

    Scent Drag

Scent Drag Yea I know they don't bathe but it just got me thinking!
  4. Well I went through the process of getting permission to hunt this farmers land. I haven't seen anyone out there since I been hunting it. As if yesterday there are now 5 stands out there. Luckily I have another property. It's just the though that I did the right thing and no one else did!

    Scent Drag

I was told never to leave scent wicks hanging in the area which you hunt. I am under the impression something happens to the scent. So are you suppose to wash the scent drag after use? I know I keep mine in a baggie and have not washed it yet. I reapply new scent to it, the same scent too. But man it is starting to get ripe!

    Crap

Literally! I went and checked out a place my buddy was telling me about on the property we hunt. Well.... When I got there my buddy had put a salt block down and something crapped on it. As I laughed to myself... And really laughing because I was going to bust him about it. But I have never seen that before. I figure raccoon! But why on the salt block. That is some funny stuff.

I don't know if sandy screwed the deer up or what but I haven't seen a thing besides a scrounge coyote!

    Calling

When calling deer what is a good method when calling between rattling, grunting, and doe bleats. When rattling and grunting does it drive away does?
  10. I used my climber with the stirrups on this morning. 1000% difference. And my confidence in using my climber has went up considerably. I just can't believe the difference those stirrups make. I actually enjoyed being in it. And when I was up in it I spied a tree a buck had demolished while rubbing on it. I went to investigate said tree and found some new prints and a whole tree line of rubs....and good ones too! So I made shooting lanes on both sides of the creek. My stand is dang near in the creek so I am between the two sides. So no matter which way the wind blows I can set up according to wind direction and place scent wicks accordingly. It is a wonder what new stirrups can do for ya! Happy hunter right now and did not even bag anything!
  11. Too windy...Too warm I hunt depending on how I feel. Like right now it is probably upper 40s and raining and I am thinking about going. And it don't look like the rain is going to end for a few hours... Probably still be rain after dark. I do want to know what is goin on during the different conditions where I hunt!
  12. I have friend who thinks I am totally crazy because I think when it is too warm and too windy it is pretty useless to hunt. When I do go like I did last night, the wind was blowing around 20 mph and it was 75 to 80 degrees out. I do not hunt from a stand during windy conditions so I just take my stool and plop down some where and watch chipmunks do their thing. So my question is...is it useless to hunt during these conditions? Might I add my buddy will hunt during a freaking hurricane if that doesn't tell you something about him!

    ohio

ohio I'm in Marion and I hunt just west and in Delaware and I have only seen sporadic movement. It has been really warm and really windy which has not made for good hunting
  14. Summit Climber Stirrups I got the stirrups in the mail today. I think they will work great. Came with a bungie also with made me happy. I was hoping to get them today so I can get them on before the weekend. Suppose to have a cold snap move in. But it is hard to want that when it is currently 83 at 5:24 in toward the end of October.
  15. Summit Climber Stirrups Yeah I figured that, I would have to keep them in the storage bags. Luckily they only attach by a wing nut to tighten. I suppose I should have bought a summit to begin with!
  16. Summit Climber Stirrups No the gorilla has square bars. On Summits website it says it fits 1 in bars and that is what mine is. I never thought about paracord loops, but I am hoping the summit stirrups work because I don't want to be fiddling with that I'm the wee early hours
  17. Summit Climber Stirrups Yea I have it tied together. It is thought of it being a pain in the ass which gets me!
  18. I am trying to figure out how to make using my climber a little easier and safe. I own a Gorilla Silverback climber. The foot strap which came with it keeps coming loose and I am afraid to lose the platform while climbing. My buddy has a Summit and he said his has stirrups. I got on line and found them for about $23. They say they fit all Summit and most commercial brand climbers. Does anyone know how well Summit stirrups work with other climbers or does anyone have ideas on how to improve the system which I currently have in place which isn't very good to start with?

    scent wicks

scent wicks Even if I have my stand set in the wood line. From the edge of the wood line to the creek is about 20 yards. I am 3 to 5 yards inside wood line with some good shooting lanes. U have the way point idea just did not use that language.

    scent wicks

scent wicks I want to space some scent wicks in a wide area to get a good scent drifting to the left and right of me. I do plan on dragging a scent drag behind me while putting up wicks an back to the stand but not in a direct line... A more wondering path back to stand. My kill friendly is 15 yards...lol!

    scent wicks

The property I hunt has two cornfields and a creek which splits them there are 2 small wood lines on this property along with vegetation along the creek. Setting up stands in the wood lines is no good because the wind is always out of the west and makes it bad for scent if setting up in the wood line. Along the creek t is different. I have found a tree along the creek to put a stand in. But much of the property is behind me and the wind would be blowingy scent that way. I have been patterning the deer and they don't come from behind me but from the left and right of me, basically following te creek. I suggested to a friend that I was going to space out scent wicks about 75 yards on each side of me and drag a scent drag while doing it leading back toe stand. He said that was too much and it would only confuse them. As I thought about this I tried to figure out what the difference was in what he was saying and the use of buck bombs or other products which saturate the area. I can't deploy the scent wicks right in front of me because if they pick that up they will pick me up along with it. Any one got any ideas of how to deploy scent wicks when the wind is in your face but the deer can potentially come from behind you.

    stumped

stumped I technically was not looking for bucks. Granted if a nice one walked by and I had a good shot presented to me I would take it. I really was trying to fill a doe tag and that was the first time I seem any bucks at all. All three were 4 or 6 pointers. But the one which was running looked to be little more mature. I know it is too early here in Ohio for scrapes to mean anything. It just seemed weird how everything happened and now nothing!!!! I did learn a few things so not all was lost!!!!!

    stumped

The other day I posted about these bucks coming within 5 feet of the blind. I did not have a chance to even acquire a shot because a buck on the other side of the creek was (for lack of better terms) hauling balls. I mean he was at full sprint. He ran right past the 3 bucks and 4 does which were right were I was. When they seen him a doe wheezed and they all took off. Well I went back out this evening and there were no new signs of activity. I covered some scrapes before I left last time and they are still covered.. I have no clue what had that buck so spooked but it has me worried because there is no new activity. What do you guys think?
  24. up close and personal I smiled all the way home, after I thought about it didn't know whether to be mad or not because I did not get one of them. But I learned something that day. Along with being right with the wind I know I was de-scenting good because there was no reason why they shouldn't have picked me up being that close!
  25. Went out this morning and sitting in the blind. Three bucks walked up behind me in the blind...5 foot at least. I thought one was going To stick his head in. Talk about fun!!!!!!
