redkneck
A Dell Inspiron is a good basic laptop. Unless your into gaming big time, there's no need to drop a lot of $ on graphics cards. Call Dell and tell them what you want to do. Don't settle for less than 4gb of ram though, and most everything comes with a wireless card standard. Get them to email you a quote to look over. You can then take that to Best buy or another retailer and start comparing apples to apples, and then make the best decision. No need to spend more than 500 on a basic internet browsing, office application, light gaming machine. Something like this: HP - Pavilion Laptop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Pewter - g6-1b79dx Remember everything adds a little extra, they try to bump you up on batteries, processor, memory, etc. Decide whats most important to you. If you take all the upgrades they offer, you'll have a $1000 machine. Just don't skimp on RAM up front, and get a decent processor. ruttinbuc
I think you need to look at what you will be using it for. If you are going to use it for running some high graphic games or memory/power intensive software applications you'll need to get something to handle it. Get the most processing power that you can afford. I would go to Laptops & notebooks: Laptop computers, notebook computers - CNET Reviews and read up on the pros and cons for your needs. rhine16
You've got good advice above. As a fellow college student, I'll tell you it's important to have the Microsoft Office package on your laptop. Oh and if you have $1500+ to drop on a laptop, then buy a Mac

Ethan Givan
I will not be playing games on it. It will mostly be used for college and surfing the web. Might store and edit pics on it.
redkneck
For school work, be sure and do like Rhine said and get MS Office. I got both my kids laptops for Christmas and got MS home and office student edition pretty cheap, and you can install on like 3 pcs too. Yeah I bought the MS Office 2007 when I started college and got it really cheap because I was a student. MS office is definitely a must have. devildog
I really like IBM or what they call Lenovo now. get one with Windows 7, Office 2010 package. They have the best tech support out of all the other brands. They sell packages setup more for school use or work use. Just make sure when you do get one get a big enough hard drive and plenty of memory with a wireless N network card. One of the most important things people forget about is the antivirus, make sure you to get a good one.
The_Kat
MACBOOK PRO!!!! It's better to spend 1500$ than waste that and then some on a new one every year or every other year at best. I have 2 dells ( $1400 ) and a HP ( $800 ) and they all crapped out in a year each. My macbook is just a fast as the day I bought it, plus I have NO virus protection costs. It's never locked up......They're worth the money!
