High Country Posted August 24, 2011 Report Share Posted August 24, 2011 I am going to have to purchase some new broadheads for this hunting season...not really sure what to buy... I shoot an older model High Country Ultra One Cam set at 63# launching 26" long Carbon Express shafts around 310 fps... My last broadheads were Muzzy 100 grain 3-blades...I killed three deer with these (2 does and 1 buck) all of which went less than 75 yards and basically fell in sight...the problem is that the blood trails in all three cases were sparse, and would have proven very difficult to follow had I not seen the deer go down...all three were double lung hits (one complete pass through and two buried to the fletching after busting through both shoulder blades)...the Muzzy's are absolutely tough... Would switching to the Muzzy 125 grain 4-blade improve the blood on the ground? or should I look at something else...? Admittedly, I have recovered every deer shot with the Muzzy 3-blades, just worried about one not shot so well... Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dbHunterNY Posted August 24, 2011 Report Share Posted August 24, 2011 First, I'd try to stay away from the shoulder blades for a couple reasons; you're bound to eventually break a blade or bend the ferrule and, you'd get a better blood trail going through lower and behind the shoulder. With that said, the four blade has more cutting area so it should help with the blood trail. If you can get your bow to shoot the 4 blades well then great. Otherwise, the 3 blades will produce a good enough blood trail if you change up where you're aiming I'd think. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Rhino Posted August 24, 2011 Report Share Posted August 24, 2011 Where you hit them and and whether or not you have complete pass throughs will sure determine how good a blood trail you have. The ground you're tracking them on sure does too. Both 3 blade and 4 blade make holes but the 4 blade will obviously have more resistance since it has 1 more blade. Tony Posted August 24, 2011 Report Share Posted August 24, 2011 ive had awesome blood trails with Muzzys and some not so awesome. i think it has to do more with how low the arrow exits out of the deer. low exits produce a lot of blood for me, but the few i hit a little high have not produced great blood trails. luckily i have seen those go down and have not really had any bad tracking situations in a long time. all of the animals i have shot with my Muzzy 75s or 100s have been recovered. you could go to a bigger cut broadhead and try that, but if your getting great accuracy with Muzzy, i wouldnt switch. BuckNrut Posted August 25, 2011 Report Share Posted August 25, 2011 I use a late model setup like High Country. A few years back I switched to Boss SST from Wasp (100 gr, 4-blade). Rhino Posted August 25, 2011 Report Share Posted August 25, 2011 For what it's worth...here's a picture of the blood trail I had from the Kudu I heart shot in Africa earlier this month using a 125 gr. Montec G5. As you can see...no problem trailing him with that shot from that 3 blade head. Like Tony said...you hit them low like that and get a complete pass through...no problems tracking. abrown Posted August 25, 2011 Report Share Posted August 25, 2011 (edited) I love my Wasp BOSS SST 100 gr. 3 blades. I had a complete pass through on a cow elk last year at 55 yrds. I believe I have the elk heart posted on my profile. I do buy rubber O-rings from Lowes that allows me to align my blades with my fletchings though. I had to dig an arrow out of the intestines of the 6.5 yr old buck that's on my avatar, he was at 15 yrds.
