SuperMn106
My fiancee and I have decided that for our honeymoon we are going to Gulf Shores, AL. We are going to be staying in the orange beach area.Since neither one of us has seen the ocean I think this will be a good spot. I have a couple of questions if anyone can help with them I would greatly appreciate it. First question, I did get permission to be able to find a local fishing charter and do one day of fishing while I am there. (Yes, I am very lucky). I am not sure what I want to fish for though. We would be going somewhere around late July to early August. I would love to be able to catch Tuna or some of the other big game species but do not want to spend that kind of money. I am thinking maybe some redfish, I heard they were fun to catch. I would like to find fish where I could cast for them. Any tips or reccomendations would be helpful. Second Question, what is there to do as of attractions? I think the big part of us is going to be the beach and enjoy that but would like a few other things to do also. Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions. MUDRUNNER
I would like to know what else there is to do around that area myself. My sister went a few years ago, and really enjoyed it. They rented a beach front condo in Gulf Shores for nearly half what we paid to stay at a beach front hotel in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. We're thinking about going this summer after the kids are out of school.
johnf
I would like to know what else there is to do around that area myself. We're thinking about going this summer after the kids are out of school. Gulf Shores is great. I take my family about every other year and I've been taking my seniors that at are in band (I'm a band director) every year the last few years. I've not taken a charter, but I think you can do a group charter for abotu $125 a person for a 6 hour trip. Fishing license is only about $20 if I remember right. I've done all my fishing on the beach with just an ugly stick catfish pole. There are several bait shops close to the beach that will get you what is biting and from what I've seen are very honest. There are a bunch of "crap shops" as I like to call them full of shells, fish, t-shirts and everything you need on the beach. There is also a Wal-Mart about 15 minutes inland where you can get all that stuff for 1/2 the price. There's an airforce base in pensecola that you can tour. It's a lot better than you would think. It's where the blue angels practice and you can see them just about any day. For food, there are tons of options. I found a little place called "Gulf Shores Steamers" that's just west of the bridge between Orange beach and Pensecola. It was voted "top seafood" place in the gulf and top 5 in the country. It's not really expensive and is awesome. There are seveal dolphin tours that you can take. They all stay in pretty much the same area so just find the cheapest one and you'll be good. It's a lot cheaper to get a house or a condo with a full kitchen in the long run if you want to cook. If you book way in advance you can save a buttload of money too. Bell's about to ring. If I think of anything else I'll post later. Oh!!!!Suprman106, When are you going? Edited January 13, 2012 by johnf
johnf
For fishing on the beach it really depends on what time of year you go. I went in early summer and all the cool fish weren't there. I did catch a lot of whiting, catfish, popeno, two decent sized stingrays and a 26" blacktip shark. I ate all but the stingrays and shark. I fished mainly early morning and at night to avoid the swimmers. Both stingrays were caught at night, but the shark was caught about 10:00 in the morning. There are also a few little amusemnt park type things in Gulf shores, but we've never gone to them. My phylosophy is that if you go to the beach, you go for the beach, not for go carts and farris wheels. It's seems like there's an aquarium, gater park and it seems like you can do some air boat rides in some swamp land. That may be somewhere else though. There is also a peer that you can go out on. It's pretty cheap and you can fish off it, but I think they may charge a fee and it can be elbow to elbow, also depending on what time of day and year, what day of the week, ect. USAFbowhunter
I live 25 miles north of FT Walton Beach in Crestview, FL and am stationed at Eglin AFB and Gulf Shores/ Orange beach is only about an hour away from me. The Beach is always nice down here but as for other stuff to do in Orange Beach there is a good amount of stuff to do. I am sure you have checked this web site out. Gulf Shores Alabama - Orange Beach - Alabama Gulf Coast Vacations I know there are usually a good amount off concerts over in that area during the summer and you are also not that far from Pensacola where the Navy Blue angles are stationed out of and they usually do shows down there and there is also the USS Alabama that you can go and take a tour of.
